Before entering politics, he was a commander in the Israeli Army, serving during in the Suez Crisis, the Six-Day War and the Yom-Kippur War. As Israeli Minister of Defense, he directed the 1982 war with Lebanon, where he earned the nickname the "Butcher of Beirut" amongst Arabs. He encouraged the development of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza, later orchestrating the Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip.
