First edition in English of De Humboldt's landmark scientific expedition from Spain to South American and Cuba from 1799-1804. Humboldt (1769-1859) "was perhaps one of the greatest scholars of all time; a prodigious figure, hailed in his time as one of the most famous men in Europe, second only to Napoleon" (Howgego, Encyclopedia of Exploration to 1800, p.528). It was arranged by the Spanish minister of state that Humboldt and French botanist Aimé Bonpland could travel anywhere in the South American continent in exchange for reporting back on mineral deposits.
