London: Thomas Vautroullier, 1577. You are bidding on an extremely rare Lutheran book of great importance to the Protestant Reformation: A Commentarie of M. Doctor Martin Luther vpon the Epistle of S. Paul to the Galathians: first collected and gathered vvord by vvord out of his preaching, & novv out of Latine faithfully translated into English for the vnlearned. VVherein is set foorth most excellently the glorious riches of Gods grace... [London] : Diligently reuised, corrected, and nevvly imprinted againe by Thomas Vautroullier dvvelling vvithin the Blacke friers by Ludgate. Cum priuilegio, 1577. [a translation of: In Epistolam Sancti Pauli ad Galatas Commentarius] This is one of the very earliest editions of Luther published in England. In this case, an early modern English language edition printed in black letter, a Germanic looking font that some people refer to as 'gothic' (though that's technically a misnomer). This is the second edition that came out two years after the first printing. I've researched this particular edition for a few enjoyable hours and I've found very few worldcat holdings, which means this is a genuinely scarce book. I could not locate any 16th Century editions currently for sale on the international market. Like the Huntington Library copy from which electronic copies have been made, this one lacks the 'table' described on the title page. The actual text is complete. The 3/4 red leather binding is approximately 200 years old. I'll describe the overall condition in a moment, but first I want to draw your attention to a palimpsest of sorts.
