Adventures of Huckleberry Finn-Mark Twain-the first American printing-1885
1885. A very good plus copy (very slight wear at the extremities with apparent slight touch-up at the head & foot of the spine; a little random soiling but, overall, a clean, tight text; nice gilt to cover & spine. An appealing copy. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. New York: Charles L. Webster and Co., 1885. First American edition, first printing, first issue. The traditional issue points on this book have recently been persuasively reassessed. The first printing was done using electrotype plates, produced simultaneously on different presses, hence there are minor variations within the first printing due to damaged plates. Only three substantive changes were introduced after the first printing - 1) at p. 13 the erroneous page reference "88" was changed to "87"; 2) at p. 57 the misprint "with the was" was corrected to "with the saw"; and 3) at p. 9 the misprint "Decided" was corrected to "Decides" (this last change overlooked by Johnson, Blanck et al.) These are the only points to distinguish between the first two printings, and ourcopy has all three in first state. *** That said, some of the older "points" of concern in this copy, are - 1) title page is a cancel sheet, 2) title page has 1884 copyright on verso, 3) p.143:"l" in "Col." missing & "b" in "body" (l.7) broken, 4) p.155: the 2nd "5" is in a different font (p.155 occurs randomly in all 3 states independent of the other major signs of the first printing sheets), 5) p.161: signature mark "11" is missing, 6) p.283 is a cancel sheet 7) there is a blank leaf between the last page of text and the rear free endsheet. *** … [Click Below for Full Description]
