Francoise Gilot
PICASSO Exhibit Catalog signed by Francoise Gilot
Printed in France: Tudor Publishing Co, 1962. Good. This is a small exhibition catalogue of Picasso's pottery. It measures 4.5" x 6" and has 16 color plates. The catalogue is signed inside by Francoise Gilot who was Picasso's third Muse & mistress ; she was also the Mother of their children. They were together from 1944 to 1953. Later she married the famous American polio vaccine pioneer - Dr. Benjamin Salk; afterwards she lived between New York and Paris. Picasso's Ceramics are seldom seen, and the works in this little book are great. The first owner of the book was Brigitta Bertoia, the famous designer/sculptor Harry Bertoia's wife; and the daughter of W. R. Valentiner. (Three years after the end of the First World War, the Detroit Institute of Arts hired the German art historian W.R. Valentiner as a consultant and an art buyer. In 1924, Valentiner was named director of the Detroit Inst of the Arts museum and remained in the position until 1945. In a few instances, the works were gifts to the museum from Valentiner's own personal collection. Thanks to his efforts, the Detroit Institute of Arts has one of the largest and finest collections of German Expressionist art in the United States.2 ). Bigitta gave me the catalogue in 1987 as a gift in Barto, PA. Cataglogue has some interesting history thus far. Catalogue was printed in France; it's copyright is by Fernand Hazan, Paris English; and presented by the Tudor Publishing Co. * * * Feel free to ask questions, and thank you for your interest.
