Diary of an Idle Woman in Spain Copyright Ed. 2 Vols. Extra Illustrated 1880
1914. These books are from the library of J. Alden Weir and were rebound by his daughter Caro Weir Ely, artist, print maker and bookbinder. The books have been profusely illustrated with stiff photos, most in brilliant color, corresponding to scenes described in the books (appropriate corresponding text is underlined in pencil). A note on a blank fly leaf ("Cora Rutherfurd (sp) - from May 3rd 1914 to June 13th 1914") indicate the source of the photos. The books are undated, but Hathi Trust has 187? and the Tauchnitz copyright edition is dated 1884. The books have marbled end papers and 271, clear, minimally toned pages (gilt edged all around) bound in tan Morocco with with three raised bands on the spine and the boards embellished with a coat of arms on the front and a rose on the rear. A few of the photos of people have them dressed in cloth. These are an exquisite, unique set (an assumed first edition) published by Brentanos.
