Zionist activity in Baltimore began in 1889 when a branch of the Hovevei Tsiyon society was founded in the city, followed three years later by a branch of Shovei Tsiyon, an association encouraging colonization of Palestine. In 1894, the Hevrat Tsiyon, a more enduring organization, was established under the leadership of Reuben Aaronsohn, with members including Solomon Baroway, Moshe Falk Mervis, and Israel Fine. These initial activities mark Baltimore as one of the earliest American cities with a signific0ant Zionist presence (Goldstein and Weiner, 2018) . SUBJECTS: Zionism - United States.
