Ward, Lynd
Vertigo: A Novel in Woodcuts by Lynd Ward
New York: Random House, 1937. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/good. 230 images. Octavo [21 cm] in decorative black cloth, with publisher's black topstain and the elusive jacket, which has a handful of small losses from the edges, and which has had a number of internal repairs performed by a conservator. "Vertigo" was the sixth of Ward's great wordless novels. "Vertigo" tells the story of the Great Depression through three intertwining stories of greed, love, death and despair. Ward produced six wordless novels between 1929 and 1937, and although Ward continued to be an in demand illustrator for the rest of his life, these early works find him at the absolute height of his creative and artistic powers. "Vertigo" is generally considered to be his masterpiece.
