Very scarce folio copy of this heavily illustrated Giuntas Press imprint of the medical works of Galen, a native of Trent, presented in its original green tinted vellum binding, the spine with three ribs and a gilt title label, as shown. Galen was a physician of the emperors Ferdinand I , Maximilian I and Rudolf II. A 2nd century Roman citizen, Galen was famed for his prodigious writing on medicine and surgery, skills he honed while treating wounded gladiators. His books contributed much to medieval medicine in Europe and throughout the Arabic world of the time. Many of his concepts held influence to numerous scholars and writers, spanning well over the next 1500 years. That's not to say he didn't make some egregious mistakes-the notion of the four bodily humors, the relation of astrology to medicine, and the common use of blood-letting for almost any illness or disease are all ideas whose roots can be traced back to Galen's work. Although he made some mistakes, as with many in antiquity, his positive contributions to medicine are monumental.
