London: Faber and Faber, 1973. A Fine copy in Very Good+ dust wrapper, inscribed by Lowell to his long-time friend and National Book Award winning author J. F. Powers. London: Faber and Faber 1973. First UK edition. A gift from Lowell with the author's compliments slip laid in. Inscribed by Lowell to "Jim and Betty / with love / Cal / May 1973 ". Jim and Betty were J. F. Powers, author of the National Book Award winning novel Morte D'Urban, and his wife Betty. Cal was Lowell's nickname that his friends called him, a boarding school name that stuck. Lowell and Powers met in 1947 at Yaddo, an artists' community in Saratoga Springs, NY. They became drinking buddies and would go to the track together, and Lowell considered Powers in his close circle of friends (along with Randall Jarrell, Peter Taylor, Elizabeth Bishop, Mary McCarthy, Hannah Arendt, John Berryman, Flannery O'Connor and Theodore Roethke). Lowell and Powers were also connected through their Catholicism. Lowell converted from Episcopalianism to Catholicism; however, by the end of the forties, he would leave the Catholic Church. Powers was one of the radical-liberal Catholics of the forties and fifties who often drew his inspiration from developments in the Catholic Church and was known for his studies of Catholic priests in the Midwest Provenance: from Powers' estate, signed in pencil by his daughter, Katherine Powers, who edited a collection of Powers' letters, "Suitable Accommodations: An Autobiographical Story of Family Life" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2013).
