Decorative tail-pieces. Printed by Jas. Wade. Bound by Burn, their original small ticket to rear pastedown. Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Binding tight and secure. Tiny amount of rubbing to spine ends. Covers and contents very clean. Just a few fox spots to endpapers. An excellent copy of this rare book. Note: Melville was a painter of English origin. A son of the London engraver, lithographer and water-colour painter Henry Melville (1826-41) and his wife, Martha, née Harden. His career as a painter began with lessons from his father and at school. Splendid visions of the South Pacific acquired from reading Captain Cook's Voyages as a boy inspired him to accept the position of draughtsman on board HMS Fly in 1841. Melville sailed with Francis Blackwood as artist for a voyage commissioned to make a detailed and scientific survey of northeast Australia, concentrating on the Great Barrier Reef.
