New York: C. Van Nostrand, 1888. First edition of Atkinson's fundamental work on the elements of electric lighting. From the library of Thomas Edison with his ownership signature to the front free endpaper, "Thos A Edison" and his library stamps to the front free endpaper and title page. Octavo, original cloth with gilt titles to the spine. With a typed letter of provenance on Edison Laboratory letterhead tipped in and affixed to the rear endpaper indicating that the book was signed by Edison at the request of one Miss Jewel D. Perret who was building a small museum in her home and reads in part, "[Mr. Edison] was interested in reading of your plans to make a little museum in your home, and in accordance with your request he has autographed one of his old electrical books and has requested us to send it to you with his compliments." With an original photograph postcard of American botanist Luther Burbank taped to the verso of the front panel. In very good condition. Rare and with noted provenance. Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor who developed many devices including the motion picture camera, the phonograph and the electric light bulb. Dubbed "The Wizard of Menlo Park", he was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production and large-scale teamwork to the process of invention, and because of that, he is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory.
