Trollope, Anthony
Orley Farm (2 Volumes)
Chapman and Hall, 1862. First Edition, mixed issues. Complete in two volumes. 8vo. viii, 320; viii, 320 pp. With 40 illustrations by J. E. Millais. Beautifully bound by Bayntun-Riviere in full green morocco with gilt ruling, dentelles & decoration; gilt lettered red leather titles lables on spines. Lacking half titles and publisher's advertisments; previous owner name in each volume; else a fine set. First published in monthly shilling parts by the London publisher Chapman and Hall. While it is primarily a tragedy of misdirected maternal love, the story contains much of the best Trollopian humor, and includes the portrait of his finest gentleman, Sir Peregrine Orme. Orley Farm became Trollope's personal favourite. George Orwell said the book contained "one of the most brilliant descriptions of a lawsuit in English fiction." - wiki (Sadleir 13).
