CHARLES DICKENS BOZ
1837 CHARLES DICKENS *1ST ED POSTHUMOUS PAPERS PICKWICK CLUB 73 PLTS PHIZ BOZ @
LONDON: CHAPMAN HALL, 1837. I have here for sale unique book entitled THE POSTHUMOUS PAPERS OF THE PICKWICK CLUB by CHARLES DICKENS. Published in 1837 by CHAPMAN & HALL, London. With 43 engraved plates including frontispiece and vignette title page by R. SEYMOUR & PHIZ - AND a further 30 plates some signed T. O. and many of which are dated July 31 1837. So this book contains 73 plates instead of the expected 43 plates. A FIRST EDITION SECOND STATE. I think that the original owner of the book also purchased a later or earlier edition which had different plates, and he took these plates and had them bound in with his First Edition Second State copy of the book. There are a few indicators that a copy of Pickwick Papers is simply an early or a First Edition - these are the points that my book has, and it shows that this book is the First Edition, Second State. Please note p.9 marginal note appears (suppressed in later issues); p.25 and 27 bear the signature mark "E"; "S.Veller" for "S.Weller" at p. 342, line 5; p.282 and p.299 erroneously noting "Chapters XXVIII"; p.375 header reads "PICWKICK". The other points are corrected and the engraved title vignette is in the second state, with "Tony Weller" on the signboard, the plates with the Chapman and Hall imprint. Octavo (24 x 15cm), pp.xiv; [1, directions]; [1, errata]; 609; [1, blank]. Bound in half leather over marbled boards. Red gilt title lettering to the spine which has been sympathetically re-stored. Marbled endpapers. Text pages are clean while the engraved plates are oxidised to a greater or lesser degree. We have over 2 … [Click Below for Full Description]
