George Eliot 1879 SIGNED Impressions Theophrastus Such 1st Edition Middlemarch
1879. "Impressions of Theophrastus Such" by George Eliot. Published by Harper & Brothers in New York in 1879. First American edition. With a remarkable signed letter from George Eliot (Mary Ann Lewes). Affixed on the front leaf is a letter, hand-written and signed by Mary Ann Lewes, George Eliot's birth name and the last name of her partner. It thanks Harper & Brothers Publishers for their advance of £50 for Theophrastus Such. It is dated June of 1879 on Eliot's letterhead from The Heights. Lewes is the surname of George Henry Lewes, Eliot's long-time life partner. Eliot's birth name was Mary Ann Evans, and in addition to using the pen name George Eliot, she also signed her name Mary Ann Lewes. The original envelope that the letter was mailed in is affixed to the following page, guaranteeing provenance of the letter. The letter has a light folding crease across the middle, as expected. The book is half-bound in black morocco over marbled boards. Gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. Marbled endsheets and fore-edges of the textblock. The book is in very good minus condition. Rubbing to the boards with scuffed edges. Wear to the leather at the spine ends and hinges. Newspaper clipping stapled to the rear leaf. The textblock is gently toned but clean and bright. The binding is sound. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. We are always interested in purchasing individual or collections of fine books. Inventory #(F11-10).
