Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe Tales Of Mystery And Imagination 1852 first British edition 1st
London: Vizetelly, 1852. Book condition: very good plus. First edition, first printing of Poe's tales to appear in Britain, and first illustrated edition to appear anywhere. Comprises the two volumes of Tales & Poems issued in the Readable Books series, begun by Henry Vizetelly in 1852. Poe #1 was the first volume in the series, with Poe #2 being the ninth volume. As the publisher's name changed several times in just one year, Volume 1 appeared under the Vizetelly imprint, Volumes 2-4 are attributed to Vizetelly & Clarke, and by Volume 8 the publisher is Clarke, Beeton. As the first illustrated Tales of Poe, it includes 42 high quality engravings on wood with illustrated title pages and frontispieces. Volume 1 comprises a memoir of the author by the Reverend Rufus Grimswold and 256 pages of text including the three Dupin detective stories, The Gold-Bug, and a selection of poems including The Raven and Lenore. The second volume of the Tales comprises 252 pages of text, including The Fall of the House of Usher, Hans Pfaall, and The Pit and the Pendulum, along with a number of poems including To Helen and The Conqueror Worm. The two volumes are bound together as they were likely originally issued. This copy is in contemporary half-leather binding. Comes in quarter morocco slipcase. On the front board is the book plate of the noted early book collector Graham Pollard. See all 12 pictures. [Attributes: First Edition]
