London: John and Paul Knapton, 1732 - 1747. 4 volumes in five (volume 4 being in 2 parts). Volumes 1 & 2 second edition, remaining volumes 1st editions. All volumes with titles in red and black and with engraved vignettes. Volume 1 with portrait of Rapin as frontispiece, volume 2 with portrait of Tindal as frontispiece. 5 volumes folio (16 x 10 inches). Illustrated with a further 59 fine engraved portraits, 48 folding Town and Battle plans, 9 genealogical tables (2 folding), 23 engraved maps (of which 21 fine folding maps with engraved cartouches, by Emanuel Bowen & R. W. Seale); 32 plates of medals and 28 other engravings of monuments etc. (1 double-page). Many of the portraits have been re-margined at an early date which does not detract from their appeal. Contemporary full brown calf, borders in blind enclosing central lozenge also in blind. Spines blocked in blind and gilt lettered direct. Headbands a trifle worn, both boards of vol. 4 (pt. 2) detached, lower board of vol. 4 detached. Joints rubbed but firm on other volumes, all edges gilt. 1-inch chip from headband of vol.4.
