LOEFFLER, Ludwig Henrik ("Henry"
[TELEGRAPH CABLE] [PHOTOGRAPHY] Photograph album documenting work of the Cable Ship Faraday in 1898
[Carribbean, possibly Virgin Islands?]: 1898. Hardcover. Quarto album (11 ½ x 9 ¼ins.; 292 x 235mm.), containing 48 original photographs (each approx. 3 x 4 inches), window-mounted recto and verso of six card leaves. Photographs mostly in very good condition, some slightly overexposed, and with occasional mild spotting. Album leaves show some foxing, but overall a well-preserved album, very good. Very good. Fantastic photograph album which mostly documents ordinary working days on the CS Faraday, a Siemens-built cable ship which spent five decades laying undersea cables for telegraphs, including the Transatlantic Cable. About half the images show the boat from various angles, or its crew engaged in various aspects of the cable-laying process. The other half depict images of the crew in non-cable-related activity; also island life, including a very "colonial" street scene in what appears to be St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. An important visual record of this engineering triumph, in its time on par with the Panama Canal and other great endeavors.
