Victor Hugo
Victor Hugo (2014) 'Toilers of the Sea', *signed limited Folio Society edition
fine in near fine clamshell case. Victor Hugo (2014) 'Toilers of the Sea', Folio Society limited edition (this being no. 5 of 1,250 copies) and a hand written line with signature by Victor Hugo. The line is an eight-word quotation from one of his poems reading: "Donnez, riches. l'aumône set sour de la prière." Translation: 'Give, rich people. Charity is the sister of prayer.' The line is written in the Alexandrine metre consisting of 12 syllables popular in the 19th century. The content is very representative of Hugo who was very concerned of social issues in France during his lifetime of which his best known work bears testimony to this (e.g. Les Misérables). His political engagement earned him exile on the island Guernsey where he penned 'Toilers of the Sea'. In addition, we provide a Hugo portrait postcard which was sent in 1902. We recommend to leave the cut out signature in the provided acid free see through plastic protector, or to tip it in on the half-title page, ffep or limitation page as pictured. Condition of the book: like new; there is a small bookplate on the front paste down of English poet, publisher and philanthropist Felix Dennis (1947-2014) which makes the Hugo line even more fitting with this book. The Hugo cut out line and signature is in very good condition with slight signs of handling and age related discolouration as pictured. About this edition: this is the first edition published with all of Victor Hugo's original wash ink illustrations. The production quality is breathtaking: quarter-bound in Indian goatskin leather Printed cloth boards displayin … [Click Below for Full Description]
