(xxiv); 194 pp. Bound in full brown calf with black spine label. Covers well worn; both boards detached but present. Contents well used; several cello tape repairs on prelims and on occasional pages. Several old gaul ink names on prelims as shown. Overall, good. THIS COPY CARRIES WITH IT AN AMAZING PROVENANCE HAVING ONCE BEEN THE COPY OF BOTH HONORA SNEYD AND HER DEAR FRIEND & LITERARY MENTOR ANNA SEWARD. Based on the dates and inscriptions, we believe this book's history is as follows: 1746 - This copy was published and at some point afterward acquired by Anna Seward or her family. 1757 - This copy was gifted to Honora Sneyd by Anna Seward upon her coming to live with her family after Honora's mother died in 1756. Honora would have been about 6 years old then and this would have been among her earliest books. Gay's Fables is exactly the type of book she would have given her intelligent friend. 1763 - Honora marks the title page with her name and date 1769 - At some point Anna Seward is given the book back (Anna marks the book in the back 'A Seward 1769') 1771 - Honora returns to live with her father who moved back to Lichfield and sought to 're-assemble' his family 1780 - Honora dies from tuberculosis 1806 - This copy is given to a 'Maria Simpson' (we do not know who this is) on 'Jun 2nd' with the location indicated as 'Palace Lichfield 1806' There are also two instances in much later ball point pen of an own … [Click Below for Full Description]
