Full title: Antiquities of Great Britain, Illustrated in Views of Monasteries, Castles and Churches Now Existing, engraved by W Byrne F S A from drawings made by Thomas Hearne F S A, with descriptions in English and French - 2 Volumes bounds as one Author: William Bryne (engraver): Thomas Hearne (artist) Publication: T Cadell and W Davies, Strand, London (1786-1807) A rare complete set of these engravings, with commentary. Oblong Quarto, 41 x 29 cm. Hearne began his project, with Byrne, of recording the historic monuments of Britain in 1777, and the engraved plates began to be issued as early as 1778. The first 52 plates (including title page) comprising Volume 1 were first published in book form in 1786, the date on the engraved title page in this copy, though the printed one has 1807. Volume 2 was published in 1807 and comprises 32 plates. It is clear from the engraved title page for volume 1 that the project was always intended to comprise two volumes. Condition of the pages and plates is excellent - a crease to Vol 1 printed title page, slight foxing and creasing to Plate 1, slight creasing and foxing to to Vol 2 Plate 31 and plate 32, elsewhere very occasional fox marks or very minor edge stains. The impressions of all the prints are very good. The binding is sound in half calf with marbled boards and edges, but two thirds of the spine is missing, most of it however present loosely and capable of being restored.
