H. RIDER HAGGARD - QUEEN SHEBA'S RING - EVELEIGH NASH, 1910, FIRST EDITION....
London, Eveleigh Nash, 1910. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good book in a poor jacket. Inscribed by the author. Locke's copy as mentioned in Spectrum volume one, page 101. Inscribed 'To Hall from his affec. Uncle H. Rider Haggard. Ditchingham 12 Sept 1910'. On the front endpaper is a manuscript poem. My default position would be to suggest that the poem is not in Haggard's hand, given evidence to prove it was. George was vastly more familiar with Haggard than I am, and, to quote 'I feel about 70% sure that this poem was penned by Haggard himself. If not Haggard, it was, in view of the presentation, almost certainly the work of a member of his family.' - whatever the story, it's a nice addition to the book. That said, when George offered it in 2005 under Sotheby's (where it didn't sell), the catalogue description suggested the poem was not in Haggard's hand. Anyway, enough of the possible mss poem on the fly leaf; this is a presentation to copy to a relative of the author, in a dust jacket. Certainly uncommon. Purchased by Locke in 1978 with a number of other volumes for around ?50. A rare book inscribed and in a jacket. Condition: The jacket's probably supplied, given the lack of corresponding signs on the boards. 40% of the spine is absent, and the jacket is in two pieces having split along the lower spine vertically. Both upper and lower panels are complete, with just a little chipping to the corners. Spine is tanned. The book itself is heavily rolled to the spine tips, with some rubbing.
