(London): John Murray, 1871. Volume 2 only (of 2). First edition, first issue. Single volume (of a two-volume set). viii, [2], 475, [1], 16 p. Illustrated throughout with woodcuts in the text. Contemporary publisher's green cloth binding, blind ruled borders, gilt lettering to spine. Dark green endpapers. 8vo (19.4cm x 13.6cm). Good only condition. Collated and complete. Pages generally clean throughout and binding pretty solid, with scattered foxing to a few leaves only. Cloth edges and corners rubbed and boards a tad marked. Top and bottom of spine rubbed with slight discolouration to the green cloth. Gilt lettering rather faded on spine. Small closed tears to cloth down side of spine spine, one at top of around 2cm and one at bottom of around 4.5cm. Slight slant to binding. Endpapers and half-title foxed. Hinges still good though rear one is just starting at the top edge, and slightly strained at title page, and slightly more so between pages 92-193. A couple of ad leaves at the rear loosening. Top blank corner of one contents leaf torn away, and blue pen scribble on page vii which is rubbed erased, with consequent fading of some lettering.Previous owners name and date on front endpaper in black ink 'Wm Garton / 1873'.
