Cadell and Co + Simpkin and Marshall, Edinburgh: and London. 3 Vols complete, VG, 1st ed, 1 map. In uniform red half morocco with marbled boards, some blind tooling, corners & edges lightly rubbed. Spines, relaid, gilt tooling & titles. Internally, Vol 1, [2], [1], (ii-iv), [1], (ii) only, [1], 2-421 pp, 1 map (folding & coloured with repaired tear). Vol 2, [2], [1], (ii) only, [1], 2-432 pp. Vol 3, [3], (vi-vii), [1], [1], 2-436 pp, 1 chart (folding), 1 illustration (River Mississippi). All volumes have a small bookplate to fpds (McClure, Inverness), only very occasional light browning or foxing, text block edges speckled in red, all lack half titles. All printed by Ballantyne & Company, Pauls Work, Canongate, Edinburgh. (Sabin 562) (is the Bookplate of McClure. Inverness. that of Sir Robert John Le Mesurier McClure 1807-1873 of Arctic fame?). Hall, naval officer and author, who after retiring from the navy, spent his time in private travel or in literary and scientific pursuits at home. Of his travels in North America in 1827¿8, he published a three-volume account in 1829, which was translated into French.
