Fine full vellum binding by Roger Powell with his mark [initials "RP." - R reversed] to the rear paste down in the leather at the base of the board. Gilt birds in flight decoration to the boards and spine, spine slightly yellowed with age. Structurally sound and intact. All page edges gilt, minor marks and scratches to the vellum. Roger Powell OBE (17 May 1896 - 16 October 1990) was an English bookbinder. Powell was born in London. He was educated at Bedales School, of which his father was co-founder. He served as a signals officer in the Royal Flying Corps in World War I and then became a poultry farmer. In 1930 he began training as a bookbinder at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London.
