Louis Maimbourg
HISTOIRE DU SCHISME DES GRECS
Paris: Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1677. First Edition. Full Leather. Very Good binding. The first printing of the Jesuit historian Louis Maimbourg's account of the Greek schism -- that is the Great Schism of 1054 which broke the Christian church into the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic Churches. Bound in contemporary speckled calf which has had some discreet repairs; the spine with raised bands and decorations, and a morocco title label. The extremities of the spine have had some patching. The title page has an engraved rondel of tow "Cicognes" or storks. Each of the six chapters has a handsome engraved headpiece, and an engraved capital letter, as does the Dedication page "Au Roy". There are tailpieces as well. Altogether, a handsome binding, which presents well; lacking the frontispiece. A small gift inscription penned to the top of the endpaper. Very Good binding.
