United Kingdom: Oxford Medical Publications, 1920. In very good condition. For sale is a rare first edition copy of "Plastic Surgery of the Face" by H. D. Gillies. Subtitled "Based on Selected Cases of War Injuries of the Face Including Burns", this book was authored by the pioneer of plastic surgery who revolutionized the field while attending to the plethora of war injuries during and following World War II. This book was/is considered the first "textbook" of plastic surgery. Very few copies were printed, few survive, and even fewer come up for sale. Published as a joint effort by the Oxford University Press and Warwick Square. Dedicated to Queen Mary who supported the effort to provide extended reconstructive care to the injured soldiers of the Great War. This book is heavily illustrated. Over 840 photos, figures, etc. NOT for the feint of heart (or stomach.) Quite graphic, containing photos of serious facial war injuries. Many "before" and "after" photos showing Gillies amazing work in early plastic surgery. 408 pages. Cloth cover with embossed title on cover and spine.
