Agent Orange: An American Legacy in Vietnam with an introduction by Catherine Karnow

Wellesley, Mass :: C. David Thomas,, 2015.. Edition of 50. 6 x 8.5"; 61 pages. Printed inkjet using and Epson Stylus Photo R2880 inkjet printer with archival ink and paper. Text printed on Arches 88 Silk Screen paper made in France; Myriad Pro font. Images printed on photographic paper. Presented in a lacquered wood and curved composite box 11 x 8 x 4" made by craftsmakers in Hanoi, Vietnam. Box in a handmade silk bag made by Vietnamese-American women working at the Southeast Asian Coalition in Worcester, Massachusetts. Silk cloth handwoven in Van Village near Hanoi. Signed and numbered by the artist. Subjects covered include "Agent Orange: A War Story" by C. David Thomas; "Tiger Lillies in Asia"; "Agent Orange Facts"; "American Veterans Law Suit Against the Manufacturers of Agent Orange"; " Vietnamese Victims Class Action Lawsuit in U. S. Courts" Prospectus: "The subject of this sixty-one page artist's book is Agent Orange, the deadly dioxin contaminated defoliant used in Vietnam between 1961 and 1971… "'Agent Orange' refers to a blend of tactical herbicides the U.S. military sprayed in the jungles of Vietnam and around the Korean demilitarized zone to remove trees and dense tropical foliage that provided enemy cover and to take away food supplies for the enemy. Herbicides were also used by the U.S. military to defoliate military facilities in the U.S. and in other countries as far back as the 1950s. Today, dioxin is known as one of the most deadly synthetic chemicals. Three ounces of dioxin placed in the New York City drinking water supply could wipe out the city's entire population. (Russell Mokhiber, The Multinational Monitor, April 1987, Volume 8, Number 4). "About 28 of the former US military bases in Vietnam where the herbicides were stored and loaded onto airplanes may still have high level of dioxins in the soil, posing a health threat to the surrounding communities. Extensive testing for dioxin contamination has been conducted at the former US air bases in Da Nang, Phu Cat, Pleiku and Bien Hoa. Some of the soil and sediment on the bases have extremely high levels of dioxin requiring remediation. The Da Nang Airbase has dioxin contamination up to 350 times higher than international recommendations for action. The contaminated soil and sediment continue to affect the citizens of Vietnam, poisoning their food chain and causing illnesses, serious skin diseases, and a variety of cancers in the lungs, larynx, and prostate. " Forty-five years have passed since I left Vietnam in 1970, and thought I had also left that confusing war behind me. But more than four decades later I am still trying to figure out what all that really meant to me and to my country. Increasingly this means learning what we did to the Vietnamese people and their beloved homeland. " In 1987, I returned to Vietnam for the first time since leaving in 1970. It was during that trip that I met Hanoi artist Le Tri Dung, who showed me some of his powerful paintings depicting horribly deformed fetuses that he believed had been caused by their parents exposure to Agent Orange. This was the first time I had ever thought about the exposure of the Vietnamese to this deadly dioxin. After all, most American soldiers spent less than a year in Vietnam while the Vietnamese people, both military and civilian, young and old have been living, hunting, fishing, and farming this contaminated soil since the 1960s. They eat the fish, ducks and other animals who have been dining on this deadly cocktail of chemicals for decades. "One half of the profits from the sale of this book will be donated to a group in Vietnam that works with the victims of Agent Orange. An additional one half will be donated to the Indochina Arts Partnership to continue their work of art and cultural exchange between the United States and Vietnam.

        ON THE MOVE: A LIFE

New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 2015. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 2015. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 400 pages. The author's thirteenth and final book. One of Oliver Sacks' greatest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Oliver Sacks' "On The Move: A Life". It is the bookend/sequel to his first memoir, "Uncle Tungsten: Memories of A Chemical Childhood" (2001), published fourteen years ago. "When Oliver Sacks was twelve years old, a perceptive schoolmaster wrote in his report: 'Sacks will go far, if he does not go too far'. It is now abundantly clear that Sacks has never stopped going. From its opening pages on his youthful obsession with motorcycles and speed, 'On The Move' is infused with his restless energy. The story of a brilliantly unconventional doctor and writer, and of the man who has illuminated the many ways that the brain makes us human" (Publisher's blurb). The book also reveals, for the very first time, Dr. Sacks' homosexuality as well as lifelong celibacy, in candid yet never prurient prose. The fact is Dr. Sacks was a very handsome man (plainly visible on the DJ cover photograph) who, for much of his life, sublimated (if that is the right word) his enormous appetites and energies to science ("wisdom"), medicine ("healing"), and literature ("beauty"). His single greatest contribution to Western thought is that Oliver Sacks, as a practicing specialist doctor and writer, illuminated and changed our understanding of a very old philosophical idea: Human consciousness, in all of its complexity and uniqueness. On February 19, 2015, Dr. Oliver Sacks wrote in the New York Times that he has terminal cancer, is dying, and that "On The Move", yet to be published on April 28, would be his last book. He also wrote that he would continue to work, write, and enjoy life, despite his irreversible condition, that he was, in effect, moving on yet again despite his illness. A genius and a hero, Dr. Oliver Sacks died on August 30, 2015 at the age of 82. "The Poet Laureate of medicine" (The New York Times). "There will be no one like us when we are gone. But then there is no one like anyone else, ever" (Oliver Sacks). An absolute "must-have" title for Oliver Sacks collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in blue pen-marker on the title page by Oliver Sacks. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. He also signed his name in full instead of just his initials. Sacks' signature on this particular copy has the magnificent "tail-flourish" with which he rarely signs his books (instead of just initials them when he is pressed for time). Sacks did not tour to promote the book, but signed a few copies for his publisher, a few dealers, and some friends, as his health permitted. This title is a great book. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It is, quite simply, the single most beautiful signed copy we have ever found. Please note: Almost all other copies available online are in innumerable subsequent printings. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with vintage photographs. One of the greatest writer-thinkers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER OLIVER SACKS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0385352549.

Interluceo. Papercut Illustrations by Beatrice Coron. Watermarks by Helen Hiebert

Helen Hiebert Studio, Red Cliff, CO 2015 - Artist's book, one of 25 copies, each signed by the designer / papermaker, Helen Hiebert and dated on the titlepage, all on her own handmade papers, 75% cotton / 25% abaca blend paper to showcase watermarks; pigmented abaca pulp to create the rainbow spectrum of translucent papers. Page size: 9-3/16 x 9-3/16 inches: 72pp; including colophon and endsheets. Bound by Claudia Cohen: hand-sewn exposed spine, grey paper wrappers printed with title and geometric shapes in darker grey on front panel, housed in custom-made plum silk over boards with title printed blind on grey paper laid onto spine. Illustrated with 7 hand-cut paper illustrations (translucent abaca paper in hues of rainbow) portray the mysteries of life: a baby in the womb, a couple, a child, a child gaining strength and running to embrace life, the building of a home (the pentagonal shape), exploring the world and, finally, spiritual contemplation. The seven white handmade papers feature seven intricate geometric watermarks which relate to the numbers one through seven and their corresponding shapes: point, line, triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon, septagon. While the numbers 1-7 have many meanings - days of the week, notes in musical scale, colors of rainbow - the 7 geometric shapes here progress from a point (the circle) to a seven-sided form. If this sequence were to continue ad infinitum, the resulting multi-sided figure with an infinite number of sides would approach the shape of a circle again (either the beginning or the end). The text was printed letterpress in Dante by Tom Leech, Palace of the Governors Press, Santa Fe, NM from polymer plates made by Boxcar Press. The designer / papermaker, Helen Hiebert, has contributed a page of "Reflections" which is an artist's statement in which she discusses this book. Interluceo is defined as to shine or gleam between, to be transparent, to light or light through gaps. The luminosity of abaca (banana plant fiber) is cited as an inspiration to create the colored papers of INTERLUCEO. Ms. Hiebert discusses watermarks - noting that hers are created not from wire in the papermaking mould but rather a thin rubber material. They are beautiful and the perfect subtle foil to the obvious brilliance of the cut-outs. From the cut-out and collaged seven-sided form on the titlepage to the diamond-shaped text of colophon, all in this book is simple and simply elegant. Looking at the edges of the book reveals the rainbow inside and urges the reader / viewer to enter into the mystery of light and color exhibited in these beautiful pages. The ultimate reward is the turning of each page as the story unfolds through forms as well as color and light. Abstract enough for the reader to enter his own story, but concrete enough to be visual poetry, this is a wonderful book. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        THE PLAYERS: THE DELUXE EDITION

Tucson, AZ: Nazraeli Press, 2015. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Tucson, AZ: Nazraeli Press, 2015. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Retrospective collection of black-and-white photographs. One of Mark Steinmetz's finest achievements. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 25 numbered and signed copies. As such, it is one of the smallest limitations by Nazraeli Press. Should not be confused with the regular trade edition, which has the same ISBN. An austerely elegant production by Mark Steinmetz and Chris Pichler: Oversize-volume format. Khaki cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted in front and black titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Mark Steinmetz. Introductory Essay by Anne Wilkes Tucker. 12 X 10.5 inch original photographic print laid-in. Matching cloth clamshell box. In publisher's protective plastic wrappers. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its ultimate Deluxe Edition format, Mark Steinmetz's "The Players". "Photographs of adolescent and teenaged baseball players, on the field and in the dugout, focused on the game and lost in their own worlds. Made between 1986 and 1990, the photographs are classic Steinmetz: Tenderness, humor, and humanism are all present here, as is Steinmetz's exquisite use of natural light and attention to poetic detail. The kids are ages 6 to 13, with a few older boys. Steinmetz must remember how awkward and uncoordinated bodies that age can be. His empathy is evident throughout the series. Most of these kids are too young to have the grace, skill, or concentration required and are too 'green' to experience the sheer pleasure of knowing they are good, maybe really good, ball players in an unforgiving sport. These kids run into each other in pursuit of a fly ball. Hope drives their swings more than their awareness of the art of hitting. Steinmetz concentrates less on the players in the field than those outside the base lines who are waiting to play or cooling off. He observes the managers as well as the spectators who love the game or one of the players or who just have a free afternoon. He sees 'high fives' as well as the 'what were you thinking' moments" (Anne Wilkes Tucker). An absolute "must-have" title for Mark Steinmetz collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Mark Steinmetz. This is the very last (and therefore most valuable) copy of the edition, indicated as such on the 12 X 10.5 inch photographic print that is encased in its own protective plastic sleeve and laid into the box. The print is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully numbered and titled in pencil on verso by the photographer: "Mark Steinmetz Jacksonville, Illinois 1988 25/25". The photograph of the boy, his hands clasped together in prayer, is quite simply, one of Steinmetz's most beautiful images. This title will become a contemporary photography classic. This is one of very few copies of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 73 plates, 1 original print. Mark Steinmetz's "South" Trilogy is now widely regarded as one of the greatest photographic projects of our time. One of the most brilliant living photographers. A flawless collectible copy.       Co-Tangent Press, Sacramento, CA 2015 - Artist's book, one of 6 copies, 5 of which are for sale, all on Nideggen paper, each copy signed by the artist, William T. Vollmann, on the colophon and on the hand-lettered titlepage and on the reverse of each print. Page size: 17 x 12-7-8 inches; 12pp. Bound: loose as issued; suite of prints and titlepage and colophon are wrapped in buff Rives lightweight and housed in a custom-made black cloth over boards clamshell box, with title and artist printed in black on white label on spine, box by Joelle Leavitt Webber at The Mermaid Bindery. Each of the 6 copies contains 5 original woodblock prints printed with a spoon in Charbonnel and Daniel Smith oil-based inks, with additional hand-work done a la poupee. The wood blocks were engraved on pine blocks over pencil drawings of two different female models. The Nideggen paper was first under-painted with black acrylic in order to reverse his usual negative-tone style. Each print was then archivally glued to hand-painted, edge-wrapped archival card colored with Daniel Smith gesso and Golden acrylics. The back of each print was waxed with Renaissance wax. The outlines were then embellished with translucent sanguine etching ink on the outlines. The reverse of each print has a card, tipped onto the top left corner, with the number of the set and each signed by William T. Vollmann and dated. In addition, in the lower right corner is a hand-written quotation from the Bible which refers to the image on the verso; chapter and verse are cited. William T. Vollmann's Bible Prints are all of women - as God speaks in a feminine voice. For this always provocative author, God is Goddess. The Biblical quotations so reflect this interpretation. The images are at once fundamental and sophisticated with real punch / power. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Cartographical Incantations

Berkeley, California:: Set in Motion Press,, 2015.. Edition of 25. 6.5 x 10" closed; double-sided accordion with 9 sewn folios. Letterpress and digitally printed on Hahnemühle Ingress and Nepalese Lokta papers. Ribbon tie. Signed and numbered by the artist. Casey Gardner: "A book of cartographical unfoldings, tessellated map fragments, and beasts of the imagination. Pages open to reflected images of historical map details from the Dutch Age of Discovery. Turn the book over, and the patterns become more complex, abstracting the repetition and reflection many journeys entail. Text includes wayfarer invocations and wayfinding instructions, with mapmaking histories relating to a time when the unknown could be imbued with magical qualities. "Also included is a traveler's tale of chance and choice. The story begins with a door opening and continues to hinge on the word perhaps relating the either/or possibilities that occur and move back and forth on journeys. A forgotten map presents the traveller with options at various crossroads while venturing forth into unpredictable landscapes. "Each folio opens to a tableau of a map fragment joined in reverse symmetry, as if the landscape has more to reveal upon reflection, or mirrors a traveller's aspirations in a quest. On the reverse side of the accordion, these map images are conjured into rhythmic patterns reflecting the repetition of each step in a journey and the variables that form the spell of discovery that entices us into new horizons and lands. Rituals and motifs of movement and boundaries occur in every venture into any landscape, and yet the unique contours and borders are for each traveller to discover and cross. "Each folio includes a Wayfarer Invocation, a poetic directive for finding one's way, or one's place in the world. We hope for guidance, exterior or interior, and question whether to take this path or that, to follow a map or strike out in faith. Going forth in any journey is an opportunity for an entrancing and spellbinding venture of options chosen to reflect our exploratory desires. "Map fragments are from photographs taken by the artist of sixteenth and seventeenth-century Dutch maps found in atlases at the Public Library of Amsterdam, Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam." Colophon: "In a library in Amsterdam, up many stairs, there is a quiet space by a window overlooking an inlet of water. Here a cache of atlases can be found and much time can be lost. The images in this book are artifacts from these maps, reflected & tessellated digitally for this project.

GO SET A WATCHMAN. ***RARE MISPRINT FIRST EDITION. INVESTMENT COPY***

William Heinemann 2015 - First edition, first printing. This is one of the limited number of copies released by Penguin Random House's printer Clays which were found to contain a printing error. Portions of the text are missing from pages 252, 261, 265, 268, 272 and 277 (please refer to images for a selection). This affected only a small portion of the first edition run and a replacement stock - still from the first edition run - was swiftly sent out to replace the small number of affected, so-called "missing text" copies. According to the publisher, the misprint occurred after an error at the printers resulted in six pages towards the end of the UK edition having missing lines, paragraphs, and page numbers. Interestingly, although this caused intense disappointment and frustration amongst readers - a fact picked up variously in the national press - the response was exactly the opposite amongst collectors. Therein lies, I suspect, a neat explanation of the whole appeal of rare book-collecting. Likely to remain the most desirable format to go for by some way. This copy is complete with the related promotional items. As New in As New dust-wrapper. D. B. Waters Rare Books: we are established (1998) professional booksellers of fine, select 1st editions only.       Sacramento, CA: Co-Tangent Press, 2015. Artist's book, one of 6 copies, 5 of which are for sale, all on Nideggen paper, each copy signed by the artist, William T.

        The Face of Time

New York, NY, 2015. Unique artist's book, miniature measuring 1.5 x 1.5 x 1 inches; 4pp; 2 of which are double-page spreads, one folio opening and the other folding down, pages are bound into hinged metal fold-out covered in black leather, signed by the artist on the back panel, housed in black fabric draw-string pouch that drapes over a framed photograph 2.5 x 3.75 inches of a painting (by the artist) of humanity fading away. The base for the presentation of this artist's book / book sculpture is a repurposed found object - a piece of polished wood with a glass-domed porthole. The base is 7 x 5 x 4.75 inches. The artist has constructed a scene that can be viewed through the porthole suggesting space and time. The metal frame is positioned on the base overlooking the porthole. The book itself has the title, THE FACE OF TIME, set on an aged silvered frame, inset with an old token GOOD FOR ONE FARE. The text and images are the original painting, lettering, collaging, etc. of the artist. Papers and adhesives are acid free. The book, in its 6.5 inch fabric bag that can be draped over the framed photo, is symbolic of the covering of mirrors in Jewish homes when a loved one dies. Tav, the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet is part of a collage on the last page of the book. The artist's text reads, "Someone else's time / Follows me home / Climbs thru / My window. / The night whispers / A time so old / And wrinkled / With imperfections / Its meaning / is Unmistakable." The artist states, " We watch time carefully for the tell tale signs of transience. Its features are as familiar as the earth under our feet and as mysterious as nature." Measuring time is one of man's oldest preoccupations. Measuring systems - calendars based on lunar movements, water clocks, the hourglass, sundials, Stonehenge and Newgrange were all used to mark astronomical time. Horology, the art and science of making timepieces or of measuring time, becomes increasingly complex. However, time, for the artist, has its own meaning - here made visible.

        Empire Builder

Tacoma, Washington:: Anagram Press,, 2015.. Edition of 50. 7 x 9" closed, extends to 15 feet; 20 pages including pastedowns. Accordion structure. Digitally printed from watercolor illustrations on archival, 100% cotton paper. Handbound paper over boards. In paper slipcase. Signed by both artists and numbered. Empire Builder is a collaboration between artists Carol Inderieden and Chandler O'Leary; both contributed text and illustrations. The two artists lament the changes they have seen in the American West, changes driven by the thirst for oil and natural gas, changes spawned by fracking in North Dakota and ending in oil refineries of Washington. It is the story of tunnel vision and the attendant environmental consequences. The book "reads like a map - tracing both the route of the Empire Builder train and the path of industry and destruction, in one long, unbroken line." Colophon excerpts: "Seeing the Elephant was a figure of speech that came to embody the pioneer experience during the era of westward expansion. To see the elephant was to embark on a quest for riches and prosperity. It alluded to the danger and excitement associated with seeking one's fortune in an unknown land. The elephant is an illusion, an impossible promise like a desert mirage that disappears as one moves closer. ... "If the American map were the Elephant writ large, it is the railroad that breathes life into the creature. Throughout the last century of rail development, the anatomical structure of a complex organism has evolved. Today spurs and trunk lines follow a vascular system that carries a lifeblood of raw materials across the nation in a never-ending stream of freight. While the Elephant's lungs fill with natural gas, its veins run gold with domestic oil and its heart beats ever faster in the Bakken Formation of western North Dakota. "Even in today's age of dwindling resources and dire environmental warnings, Americans still see the land as a bottomless well to be tapped. In the Bakken, a new frontier has opened and is flooded once again with a new generation of fortune-seekers. "The backbone of the modern Elephant is the railroad line from Chicago to Seattle - incidentally, the same line that carries the Empire Builder passenger train. This train is aptly named for the exploits of James J. Hill, the railroad lumber baron who grew rich transporting timber and other raw materials from the Pacific Northwest to the cities and industries of the Midwest. Today one can ride the Empire Builder from one end of Hill's domain to the other, and witness every element of the fracking process along the way. In the early 20th century, the Empire Builder encouraged travelers to 'See America First' and marvel at the wonders of the natural world speeding past their windows. Today's rail passengers watch the new Industrial Revolution rolling by. "This book is an attempt to articulate our dismay at the rapid transformation of a West we know and remember. We live and work at opposite ends of the Empire Builder railroad line: Carol in the Driftless Region of Wisconsin, where the bluffs and hillsides are being strip mined for frac sand; and Chandler in the Puget Sound area of western Washington, where Bakken oil is refined and shipped to other ports by tanker vessel. We both have personal ties to the northern Plains, though recent events render the region unrecognizable when compared to our memories. Still, the railroad connects us to each other and the landscapes we love. For the pioneers of the new era, the rhythm of the railroad is the marching song of progress - but for us, it is a lament.

Intermezzi. Nine Mezzotints by Judith Rothchild

Octon, France: Verdigris Press, 2015. Artist's book, consisting of a suite of 9 mezzotints by Judith Rothchild, all on Hahnemulhe paper, signed and numbered in the colophon by the artist, one of 20 in this loose format. Page size: 14 1/8 x 10 3/8 inches; 9 original mezzotints plus half-title and titlepage, definition in French of Intermezzo / intermizzi and colophon. Bound: loose as issued, housed in custom-made clamshell box by Mark Lintott, silver, pale pink and yellow Venetian paper by Massimo Doretto over front board, black cloth over back board, label printed on white paper label on front panel, black cloth spine. There is also another edition of these mezzotints, trimmed and bound leporello style, although the mezzotints themselves are the same size in both editions. Printed by Mark Lintott. The text - a definition of the word intermezzo - taken from the Italian, refers to a piece of music, instrumental or vocal, sometimes augmented by dance, inserted into a dramatic work. More recently, the term refers to a composition that is often inserted into two parts of a more considerable work. The nine still-life prints are just that: small but perfectly realized glimpses of things that glisten between the whole image.

        Departure

Pasadena, MD 2015 - Unique artist's book, on Arches Text Wove paper, signed by the author / artist, Elizabeth McKee in pencil on the colophon page. Page size: 11-7/8 x 13-3/4 inches; 12pp. Bound by the artist: brown cloth spine with red cloth over boards painted with white "glyphs" on front cover, housed in red cloth clamshell box with white runes on top front half as if part of larger circular motif - the Phaistos Disc, a Minoan artifact, actually a holy relic of the mother goddess, from 1700 BC. Painted in jeweled and earth tones in pastels made permanent with the application of SpectraFix, with the addition of acrylic ink and paint, Ms. McKee has created her own translation of the glyphs of the Phaistos Disc. Ms. McKee started this book in 2008, finishing it in 2015. When she started DEPARTURE, there seemed little chance of the Phaistos disk being translated. However, in 2014, Dr. Gareth Owens announced that he and John Coleman had "cracked" the Minoan disk. Owens concludes that the disc may contain a prayer to a Minoan goddess. The earth tone-painted pages of the book are Ms. McKee's own imaginary interpretation of the Phaistos Disc characters - but her story is as much a prayer to a female deity as the Owens' translation. She has created pages that are irregularly shaped with fold-over edges, attached folders, as well as unfolds at bottom; however, all the fold-overs work together to create a unified page design. It is as if the reader / viewer were excavating while reading - exposing multi-layers of images - reflecting the actual discovery of the Phaistos disc in 1903 on the island of Crete. This book evolved from random marks made on a full sheet of paper made by five women meeting together one day to work on their art. Ms. McKee took the remains of some of their prints and a dragonfly stamped image and created her own world of swirling circles and fleeing female figures from this maze. Reflecting traditional Minoan images and myths, this book is very much a contemporary feminist statement. McKee's images of a small female figure in white outlines against increasingly dark jewel-colored pages insist the reader / viewer accompany the female figure on this journey through a labyrinth opening to freedom.         Plants Speak I

Stillwater, ME, 2015. Unique artist's book, an exploration of the genus potamogeton, American Pondweed, accomplished on Katie MacGregor and Arches text wove papers, signed by the artist and dated, Nancy Ruth Leavitt, 2015, on the colophon page. Page size: 11 x 6-1/8 x ¾ inches, 54pp; 42 of which are painted and/or lettered all in watercolor in shades of green. Bound by Joelle Leavitt Webber: hand-sewn on tabs, with Ms. Leavitt's own painted paper (by Katie MacGregor) wrappers indicating a watery landscape at sunrise (or sunset), housed in custom-made box of dark green cloth over boards, interior lined with Ms. Leavitt's matching hand-painted papers label in green ink on white paper with drawing of a single stalk of pondweed, with title lettered below in green ink. This is the 109th manuscript book by the artist, who, for this project, has written the text, as well as compiling texts of earlier botanists, particularly Eugene Cecil Ogden and Edith Bolan Ogden, both affiliated with the University of Michigan and the University of Maine. Included are other 19th and 20th century botanical descriptions of potamogeton with line drawings of various species, some double-page spreads, as well as a botanical list of pondweed from existing herbaria with a line-drawing of a graceful stalk of potamogeton extending along the entire left margin as well as 14 original (mostly abstract) watercolors of the plant's watery habitats. The reader / viewer is transported and submerged into these aquatic and verdant landscapes through Ms. Leavitt's words and images, and it is a magical journey. Her description of pondweed and where it is found detail the mutually-beneficial effects of this plant and other life found in its proximity. The non-text pages are watercolored in shades of green (2/3 of the page) for the pond and orange for the area above the water line. The abstract watery landscapes are highlighted by an adjacent page of cut-out lime-green paper which affords a surface view - rather the artist's interpretation of this view - of the plants covering the watery surfaces. These views - the watercolor on the verso or the lettering on the recto - are seen through the artist's lace screen. There are four such lace cut-out pages. Ms. Leavitt's affinity for the natural world finds perfect expression here - from the elegant calligraphy to the refined page design to the colorful waterscapes. This common plant (weed) is rendered beautiful and magisterial, it's place in the natural world defined and described and drawn with appreciation and respect.
