        Some Lines.

Orange, Massachusetts:: Amy Borezo,, 2013/2014.. Edition of 40 (35 standard + 5 deluxe sets). . 9.5 x 12"; 16 pages. Accordion structure. Printed letterpress: 1 - 20 printed and bound at the University of Dallas by graduate students in the printmaking program; copies 20-40 printed and bound by the artist in Orange, Massachusetts. Numbered and signed by the artist on the colophon. Paper covered boards. Laid in cloth-covered clamshell box. Fourteen pages of complex lines and circles constitute an artistic interpretation of genealogical information using as its basis an 11th-century diagram. Amy Borezo: "Some Lines is an artist's book that emerged from research into the earliest known branching diagrams. My interest lay in the complex computer science of artificial intelligence. However, as a layperson wishing to comprehend AI, I felt the need to go back to the very essence of how computers are taught to 'think.' This lay in Aristotle's Categories, out of which came the Porphyrian Tree-a branching diagram simplifying Aristotle's ontological categories into their most basic, visual form. "During further research, I discovered another early diagram, but with a narrative structure-the genealogy of Jesus. The earliest form of this long horizontal branching tree is in a manuscript of the Beatus, painted by the monk Facundus in 1047. This early Christian infographic shows each figure from Adam and Eve through Jesus as a roundel linked to another roundel through a line of birth or marriage. "This diagram holds within its form many complex questions that interest me-about the nature of authority, narrative through abstraction, and drawing through time. The subject of artificial intelligence is for another artist's book, one that I may or may never complete. In the diagrams within this book, I feel confident that I started at the beginning, literally and figuratively. Some Lines is the abstraction of a large mythos, a reduction of the original to pure visual information, black circles connected to other black circles with lines. Yet patterns of narrative remain, even in abstraction. "In 2013, I conceived this book to be printed in four days with graduate students as an Artist in Residence at the University of Dallas. I was unaware until arriving on campus that the University of Dallas is a Catholic University. It was fascinating to discuss this work on that campus with students and visitors. One student asked me, could it really have been 'any [genealogical] line' as the title of the book implies? Are these just 'some lines'? The diagram is interesting to me as a person living in a culture in which this particular narrative has some weight and complexity. These both are and are not just some lines.

        W.S. Merwin: Collected Poems 1952-1993 & Collected Poems 1996-2011.

New York: Library of America, 2013. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth, two volumes. Both volumes are signed by W.S. Merwin on the title page. Both volumes are fine in fine dust jackets. Oracular and elegant, W. S. Merwin's poetry reveals a heightened sense of what is essential to human consciousness: the fragile framing of nature, the mysteries of memory and perception, the inescapable fact of our mortality. In a career spanning seven decades-- from his brilliant emergence as the winner of the Yale Younger Poets' Prize in 1952 to his recent term as U.S. Poet Laureate--he has fashioned a poetics unmistakably his own, marked by a stripped-down, unpunctuated style that foregrounds his responsiveness, spiritual insights, and facility with unadorned, elemental language. Now, with this two-volume edition, Merwin becomes only the second living poet to have his work collected by The Library of America. Here are such landmark books as his debut volume A Mask for Janus (1952), which shows the young poet engaged in a fruitful dialogue with Auden and Berryman; The Lice (1967), with its impassioned political poems about the Vietnam War and ecological catastrophe; The Vixen (1996), which offers vivid recollections of southwestern France; the epic verse novel The Folding Cliffs (2008), set in nineteenth-century Hawaii; and The Shadow of Sirius (2008), with its "late poems / that are made of words / that have come the whole way / they have been there.

        Outside the Bible

Univ of Nebraska Pr, 2013. Hardcover. New. The Hebrew Bible is only part of ancient Israel's writings. Another collection of Jewish works has survived from late- and post-biblical times, a great library that bears witness to the rich spiritual life of Jews in that period. This library consists of the most varied sorts of texts: apocalyptic visions and prophecies, folktales and legends, collections of wise sayings, laws and rules of conduct, commentaries on Scripture, ancient prayers, and much, much more. While specialists have studied individualtexts or subsections of this library, Outside the Bible seeks for the first time to bring together all of its major components into a single collection, gathering portions of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Septuagint, the biblical apocrypha, and pseudepigrapha, and the writings of Philo of Alexandria and Josephus. The editors have brought together these diverse works in order to highlight what has often been neglected; their common Jewish background. For this reason the commentaries that accompany the texts devote special attention to their references to Hebrew Scripture and to issues of halakhah (Jewish law), their allusions to motifs and themes known from later Rabbinic writings in Talmud and Midrash, their evocation of recent or distant events in Jewish history, and their references to other texts in this collection. The work of more than seventy-one contributing experts in a range of fields, Outside the Bible offers new insights into the development of Judaism and early Christianity. This three-volume setof translations, introductions, and detailed commentaries is a must for scholars, students, and anyone interested in this great body of ancient Jewish writings. The collection includes a general introduction and opening essays, new and revised translations, and detailed introductions, commentaries, and notes that place each text in its historical and cultural context. A timeline, tables, and a general index complete the set. "--SKU: MM-21350253; EAN: 9780827609334

        New Patterns in Old Style.

Oxford, Iowa:: Sara Langworthy,, 2013.. Edition of 24. 9.75 x 8.5"; 18 leaves. Printed letterpress with photopolymer. Papers: Kitakata, Kozo Kaiga, University of Iowa Center for the Book handmade text sheets in a variety of fibers including hemp, flax and cotton, and overbeaten flax/cotton combination, an offcut left over from an earlier book "Solid Phases". Bound into a modified limp paper binding with UICB Papercase Natural as the cover paper. Housed in a cloth-covered clamshell box. Signed and numbered by the artist. Sara Langworthy: "The project began as three smaller projects: an investigation of two opposing definitions of the word 'cleave'; an exploration of the coded language and repeated words contained in tatting instructions and manuals; and a play with the negative spaces of flattened decayed leaves found on sidewalks in November. The book combines images and text printed from photopolymer plates with hand-brushed sumi ink painting. "The primary motivation for this book was to investigate the state of being two things at once, and the natural tensions present when opposing forces are required to inhabit the same spaces. All text is drawn from the definition of 'cleave,' and words taken from tatting instructions. The text in the book was constructed from a series of random/chance exercises using these words. The first signature sets the scene of the word 'cleave' fighting itself: a passionate joining with a violent separation. The second signature examines the results of the repeated joining and separating. The first signature is printed primarily in pale greys and greens; the second signature is equally monochromatic, but uses a pink/orange/yellow palette. "A formal constraint of this project was to use only papers I had in my collection, and to recycle or revisit previous half-begun prints and book ideas which had a link to the themes of duality and opposites. Two of the folios (the two outer folios of each signature) are prints begun during an Artist's Residency and Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Their initial print layers are wood type printed in opaque white and transparent white inks, layered with hand-brushed sumi ink washes. The total number of these sheets determined the edition size of the project. The leaf prints are new to this project. A number of other elements are visitors from earlier works, including especially the otherworldly watertowers and adjacent scaffolding.

The second section summarizes a sojourn among the cultural treasures of Alsace-architectural, ecclesiastical, and bookish-and following that, a journey to Geneva, Switzerland, to admire the collections of two extraordinary bibliophiles. The third section is devoted to the special pleasures of the trip as remembered by individual travelers, including notes on food, friendship, and particular sites visited.       Finanz Colloquium Heidelberg, 2013. 2013. Hardcover. Marian Crane: "Ten double-sided collaged loose panels based on torn-up art etchings given to me by Phoenix Art Group a long time ago. Paper collage and sewn beadwork add to the handpainted details, as well as an original humanist poem, 'Prayer of the Agnostic,' handwritten on the etched side. "The base imagery on the front comes from the recycled print etchings on heavy cotton rag paper, which are then inked, painted, collaged, and stitched/beaded with glass and shell beads. Additional pages were built from blank cotton rag paper, then embellished to match. The backs of the cards continue the indigo and scarlet themes in abstracted paintings. Collaged postage stamps with science, technology, and humanist/socialist themes underscore the message of the text."

Les douze fleurs imaginaires qui composent Herbarius 2059 de Miguel Chevalier prennent ici vie par le biais de flip books.
