CRISTINA DE MIDDEL "SELF PUBLISH, BE HAPPY" VOLUME 3: ARTIST BOOK - Rare Pristine Copy of The Limited Numbered And Signed Edition With Original Color Print - ONLY COPY OF THE LIMITED EDITION ONLINE

London, England: Self Publish/Be Happy Book Club, 2013 - 1st Printing. Signed. 60 pages. Published in 2013. Artist Book. Volume 3 of the critically acclaimed "Self Publish, Be Happy" Photography Book Series. One of the most beautifully conceived and realized photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 250 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the regular trade edition that was published simultaneously with it. The Limited Edition sold out shortly before publication and is now rare. A brilliant production by Cristina De Middel: Regular-sized volume format. Red hard boards with black spine and hand-painted art on the cover, as issued. Each copy has unique, graffiti-inspired art on the cover. Color photographs by Cristina De Middel. "Add-ins" (the USCIS Immigration Form and New York Jets Game Card) inserted within the book. 7 X 5 inch original color print appended at the back. Printed on thick archival stock paper in London to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Cristina De Middel's Contribution to the "Self Publish, Be Happy" art photography book Series. "Challenges the archetype of street photography. Embodying the notion of the American Dream and the tingling sensation of collective fascination with such an iconic place, the book is something of an enigma and hints at a multilayered story. Through signifiers and visual clues, the viewer is invited to piece together the sum of its parts, as in a game or a puzzle" (Publisher's blurb). The puzzle, if it is one, is the immigrant dream of a stable, prosperous, and fulfilling life, which is also the American Dream. That an idealized America is the physical epicenter of this global dream (despite its undeniable racial, social, and cultural problems, which street photography at its best often captures) is not America's fault. Surely, there is a reason that no one in the world dreams of moving to Russia or China as an immigrant. All of Cristina De Middel's Artist Books are tender, loving, and yet unflinching re-imaginations of nationalist, immigrant-internationalist, and all other utopian dreams. Although we may find her Artist Books funny and parodistic, they are, strictly speaking, neither humor nor parody. Cristina De Middel celebrates the greatest ideas and ideals, however imperfect, that people everywhere believe in, live by, and if necessary, are also willing to die for: Nationalism (nation/states that people now identify with as the very essence of their being, whether they be American, Jewish, or Zambian), the United Nations (the most abstract and unrealizable of ideals), and socially conscious, humane societies. Hers is a hopeful vision rather than a nihilistic or skeptical one, and as such, is very rare indeed among all-knowing contemporary artists. An absolute "must-have" title for Cristina De Middel collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition of 250 copies, indicated/numbered as such on the Front Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen by Cristina De Middel. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Aside from the "add-ins" (the USCIS Immigration Form and New York Jets Game Card) that are randomly inserted within the book, it comes with a 7 X 5 inch color print that is appended at the back and is available only with the Limited Edition. This title sold out shortly after publication and is now highly collectible, an instant classic. As far as we know, this is the only such copy of the Limited Edition available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A very rare signed copy thus. 60 color plates, 1 original color print. Cristina De Middel's "The Afronauts" is widely regarded as one of the greatest photography books of our time. One of the most brilliant living artist/photographers. A flawless collectible copy.       Quaternio Verlag Luzern - 2013. THE BOOK OF HOURS OF MARGUERITE OF ORLEANS - Lavish miniatures and golden borders as a window to the Middle Ages * * * The love for books was put into cradled to Margaret of Orleans (1404-1466). She was the granddaughter of the French king Charles V (he laid the foundation for the National Library of France), and great-niece of the Duke Jean de Berry (perhaps the greatest bibliophile of the late Middle Ages). When she married in 1426, a wedding gift was easily found: a magnificent book of hours, illuminated by a true master. * * * This master - now named after his main work, the Hours of Margaret of Orleans - was initially more specialized in painting chronicles and scientific manuscripts. His 41 miniatures and numerous medallions belong to the most beautiful of this period.         Dealers in Death (Killin' Time)

[Shingle Springs: Self-published 2013 - Unique artist's book in the form of a photographic album; spiral-bound quarto, SIGNED by Doug Rickard. Working with an unused Vietnam War era photo album, Rickard sourced imagery from the internet to fabricate a fictional wartime narrative that appears to be a vernacular document by a soldier who fought in Vietnam, but is really a conceptual meditation on war and history created in the artist's studio. The album contains 57 3 1/2 X 3 1/2 inch prints and 2 3 1/2 X 5 inch prints, all in color, most digitally manipulated, as well as 3 pen and pencil illustrations. The covers have been stenciled in paint, most of the images are captioned, and the pastedowns of the album are filled with excerpts from actual suicide and serial killer letters. Rickard's cutting edge application of digital technology has allowed the revision and recreation of histories to become interrelated in a way that was previously impossible; he is on the cusp of a new wave of photographic appropriation that makes this connection explicit. Period album shows light wear, else near fine in spiral-bound, hand-painted boards.

        ACCIONES CIVILES,

- [ENGLISH: (Taube, Evert) - Forseth, Einar (1892-1982): Portrait of Swedish artist and writer Evert Taube. Pencil on paper. signed and dated: "Variantskiss av Evert Taube 1927 / E Forseth". 28,5 x 22,5 cms. Very slight wear, a small ink stain to left margin. Mounted on a larger leaf. Provenance: With the family of the artist until 2013. A variant of this portrait was published on p. 80 of Forseth's 'memoirs' Mälardrottningens Gyllene sal. Mosaikbitar ur ett brokigt konstnärsliv (1973). The caption reads: "Evert Taube, my youthhood friend at the art department of Göteborgs Handelstidning, drawn in 1927 as the troubadour of Den Gyldene Freden". Forseth writes about their friendship in the 1920s on pp. 82-84.]

Year Books: Or Reports in the Follo[a]wing Reigns, with Notes to...

2013. The Vulgate Edition in Law French [Great Britain]. [Vulgate Edition]. The Year Books; Or Reports in the Following Reigns, with Notes to Brooke and Fitzherbert's Abridgments. London: by George Sawbridge, [etc]., 1678, 1679-80. 11 vols. Folio (9" x 14"). 5,802 pp. With New Introductory Notes and Tables in Each Volume Naming all Justices and Serjeants, and Listing Calendar Years of Law Terms, by David J. Seipp, Professor of Law, Boston University, with Carol F. Lee of the District of Columbia Bar. Reprinted 2007, 2013 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. Set: ISBN-13: 9781584777816; ISBN-10: 1584777818. Hardcover, folio (9" x 14"). New. * Reprint of the Vulgate edition, with new detailed introductions that address the history, content and significance of The Year Books, and tables that list all justices and sergeants, as well as calendar years of law terms. The new material includes references to Seipp's Index and Paraphrase of Printed Year Book Reports 1268-1535, which is based on the Vulgate edition reprinted here. A powerful research tool, Seipp's Index and Paraphrase of Printed Year Book Reports, 1268-1535 is a free online database of all printed Year Book reports that indexes and summarizes almost all of the cases in this edition. It also guides the reader to later and prior proceedings of individual cases and to all case references in abridgments and other sources. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of The Year Books. As Marvin put it in his Legal Bibliography (1847), these were the "venerable books" from which Littleton, Hobart, Hale and Coke drew "so much valuable ore, melting it into ingots and refining and sending it abroad as the correct coin of the common law" (756). As a series of notes on debates and points of pleadings they are primary sources for our knowledge of medieval common law. The origin of The Year Books is unknown. Maitland believed that the earliest volumes were notes taken by law students in court copied for the use of pleaders in later cases. Holdsworth maintained that The Year Books, like other law reports, were records of cases made by lawyers for their own private use with no thought toward subsequent publication. Though it is not known when the first volumes were compiled, it is clear that the earliest cases date from 126.

The Esther Scroll : Geschichte am laufenden Band Eine echte Entdeckung: Die Esther-Rolle von 1746 : Schriftrolle in Holzschatulle mit Kommentarband von Falk :

Taschen Verlag 15.03.2013.. Jahrhundert. (Taschen Verlag) 9783836517782

Berlin: Akademie Verlag 2013.. 3161 S. Kart.i.S. *neuwertig*..

1861. Weaving Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson.

East Hampton, NY 2013 - Unique artist's book, on Richard de Bas cream paper, signed by the artist on the titlepage and dated. Page size: 6.5 x 10 inches; 60pp. Bound by Rhonda Miller: sewn into brown leather, housed in custom-made cloth over boards clamshell box by Joelle Webber. This is the second in a series of "woven" books by the artist, Barry McCallion. This "weaving" juxtaposes Whitman's "1861" with three poems by Emily Dickinson from the same year: "Wild nights," "What is 'paradise'" and "I taste a liquor never brewed-". The artist has taken published texts of these poems, printed them various papers, in many colors, cut them into strips, and woven them together in many different ways, in various shapes, some cut-out with text on following page visible, some reading vertically and some horizontally. The colorful collages become shaped poetry forming a tapestry of words. The artist tells us in his opening statement that he had expected them to take dissimilar positions but instead, "they wove a complement - two aspects, rare and necessary, of an American self." The first year of the American Civil War affected one and all - from Whitman whose younger brother was fighting for the Union to Dickinson contemplating life after death and hoping to find sanctuary in another human being as well as nature. Death and war are here examined by two poets with their words creating images using words relevant today. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Witches' Sabbath.

New York 2013 - Unique artist's books (4 in this witches' library) and book object, size of object: 13-1/2 x 8-1/2 x 9-1/2 inchessigned and dated by the artist / author, Sandra Jackman, on the raised rear panel of the box, below text by the author / artist which has been collaged onto an early [found] painted book cover. Each book signed on the back cover as well. The box / book object housing three of the books is constructed around a cabinet [an echo chamber?] in a black cloth-covered box. The interior of the box is covered with blood-red silk file; witches, skeletons and other-worldly creatures fill the echo chamber. The inside door has framed three-dimensional collage of paper, found objects, with title, THE WITCHES' SABBATH Other Stories, above and on the frame of the collaged picture. Tiny creatures and thick grey shadows hover on exterior walls and door. All materials acid-free papers and adhesives, oil and acrylic paint, wax, ink. Other materials used include wood, metal findings, glass, hair net, tiny plastic figures. A separate pouch contains a flashlight and handmade doll (witch) which can be turned on by pushing bottom of flashlight to a constant or flashing light to illuminate the interior of the box. Another pouch lettered in red, "What is present will soon be past/ What is past may still be present in another form" contains Book 4, "Tales of the Witches' Sabbath / of Mid / Nights." Page size: 3 x 5 inches; 27 double-sided pages are painted in thick black oil and collaged with text and images. Random texts include "Why no outcry to crucify Lucifer? Time and place turned inside out. Divinations Accusations / Read the tract on superstition, magic and religion." and "We must listen to the silence." Outlines of cats are collaged onto black painted pages - some pop-ups - most three dimensional. Text is hand printed, typed, and computer-generated as well as stamped.A drawer nearly the length and depth of the cabinet beneath the entrance door pulls out to reveal a miniature (1 x 1 inch) accordion book as well as a hand of translucent plastic with fingertips of burnt paper with unreadable text. This is Book 3. Painted images of strange creatures fill the 11 pages. The book can be examined in situ along with the other elements stored there. A sliding bolt holds the door to the cabinet shut. Book 1 is held in a pocket installed on the right hand outside wall of the; book is double sided, measures 6-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches; hand-sewn binding in paper over boards, front cover displays a small painting of two witches with their mouths open. There are other tiny creatures hovering on both back and front of the book. THE WITCHES' SABBATH is pressure stamped on the spine and is just barely visible. The author / artist has painted and collaged each page including images and text - the witches own language and dialect - "to appease the purists amongst us" according to the artist.Book 2, "What Happens Next," fits into a pocket on the roof of the cabinet, a slim fold out, 6 x 2 inches, 6 double sided pages including the cover. Some attendees of the celebration - Circe, Jezebel, Medea, Hekate, Morgan Le Fey - are named on each of the colorful pages. The text of the back cover starts, "Someone strikes a match. The flame comes to life."The left outside wall holds a framed painting on glass depicting a witch watching a large insect. This is accomplished in oil paint and in a scratch board style. Historically the Witches' Sabbath is a pagan rite that is connected with devil worship. Long a source of inspiration for Western European artists, Hans Baldung and Goya each had a go at images. Authors such as Goethe and Meyrink are just two names on a long list of writers to describe the celebration. Composers such as Berlioz and Mussorgsky have been inspired by the rite known as Witches' Sabbath. Witches have wormed their way into mythology, religion, history, and children's literature, as well as contemporary fiction (John Updike and Ira Levin are just two exampl [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        POSTERS FROM WHITTINGTON, 1996-2013.

Whittington Press, Lower Marston Farm 2013 - Limted to 150 copies, of which this is one of 60 copies. In 1995 the Press published A Book of Posters from the Whittington Press, which contained (in the A edition) thirty-five of our posters printed between 1974 and 1995, in the same types and on the same papers as the originals - indeed some of them were from the original printings, as well be a few in this new collection. At the time, in 1995, the Press had printed some 100 posters, and in the eighteen years since then another 150 have been added to the total, and thirty-five chosen here show off a great variety of typefaces on equally esoteric variety of papers from England (some over a century old), France, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, Japan and Korea. They include illustrations from linocuts, wood-engravings, and in special copies, pochoir, among a dazzling array of the Press' extensive collection of founts. Whittington Posters are produced as a distraction from more important projects, usually in small editions of 100 or 200 copies, and given away or sold on our open days, but have nevertheless become an important part of the Press' output in helping to spread the message about its activities. By their nature they are occasional and ephemeral, and the only time they will ever come together is in a collection such as this. Also included in the collection are posters by Tom Mayo and Patrick Randle, which will add a radical note to our normal, more predictable, fare. An article describing the background and development of the Press' posters appeared in Parenthesis 20 (Spring 2011). folio, half calf and paper covered boards, dropback box.

Shipping Casualties - Loss of the Steamship "Titanic" : Report of a Formal Investigation into the Circumstances Attending the Foundering on the 15th April, 1912, of the British Steamship "Titanic", of Liverpool, After Striking Ice In or Near Latitude 41 46' N., Longitude 50 14' W., North Atlantic Ocean, whereby loss of life ensued

London. His Majesty's Stationery Office. Printed by J. Truscott and Son. 1912. Bound in imprinted blue wrappers. Housed in archival clamshell box. Tall 8vo. The First Edition. The British inquiry into the sinking of the Titanic was headed by a former judge, Lord Mersey, and, although some have suggested it was a whitewash, his report is described by the British historian Richard Howells as "the most sober and detailed documentary account available" and by American writer Stephen Cox as "a monument of intelligent and well-grounded diversity of judgment." Mersey found that the entire passage had been made at high speed but not maximum speed and that the Captain had not been ordered by the owners to break the transatlantic record as was being alleged. He acquitted Captain Smith of negligence. He regretted that there had been no proper boat drill (because the law did not require it) and that some of the half-empty lifeboats had not sought to save the passengers in the water. He regretted that the Leyland liner Californian, under Captain Lord, stopped by ice between five and ten miles away, had failed to respond to the distress rockets. Had it done so, it might have saved lives. The Board of Trade required sixteen lifeboats for all vessels over 10,000 tons and the Titanic had twenty but still not enough for the number of passengers. The inquiry recommended that in future there should be sufficient lifeboats for all those on board all ships, watertight bulkheads, a twenty-four-hour wireless service on all ships, regular boat, fire and watertight door drills, and the reduction of speed on the receipt of ice warnings. (Jeffrey Richards) Various usual chipping to thin paper covers at edges and spine.Small coloured smudge to front cover. Previous owners ink inscription to top of Title Page. Internals nicely preserved, alebit some usual dog-earing throughout. A delicate but extremely sound, clean copy of this extremely rare relic of the Titanic disaster.
