George R. R. Martin A SONG of ICE and FIRE Volumes 1-4 (Four Book Hardcover Limited Edition Set in Slipcase)

New York: BANTAM BOOKS, 2011. Book. New. Hardcover. 1st Edition. HB - Limited Edition (Amazon Exclusive) 4 Book Set in Slipcase - NEW (Sealed in publisher's shrinkwrap) Note: small tearing on top back seam of box - Includes, "A Game of Thrones", "A Clash of Kings", "A Storm of Swords" & " A Feast for Crows" - George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series has become, in many ways, the gold standard for modern epic fantasy. Martin, dubbed the "American Tolkien" by Time magazine, has created a world that is as rich and vital as any piece of historical fiction, set in an age of knights and chivalry and filled with a plethora of fascinating, multidimensional characters that you love, hate to love, or love to hate as they struggle for control of a divided kingdom. It is this very vitality that has led it to be adapted as the HBO miniseries "Game of Thrones.".

Folio. With engraved frontispiece by F. Valentius, letterpress title-page printed in red and black with engraved double publisher's device, full-page engraved plate with the portrait of Emperor Ferdinand IV, 34 mostly full-page engraved illustrations, 215 woodcut illustrations and about 50 letterpress tables.       De Backer & Sommervogel IV, cols. 1048-1049; Caillet 5780; DSB VII, pp. 374-378; Fletcher, Athanasius Kircher (2011), p. 565 (no. 5b) & passim; Poggendorff I, pp. 1258-1259; Wheeler Gift 116a. The third, last, best and only folio edition, much enlarged, thoroughly revised and with the engraved and many other illustrations newly made for it, of one of the major scientific works of the famous German Jesuit scholar, Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), a truly encyclopedic work on magnetism. Kircher published his first major work, Ars Magnetica, in 1631. Only 63 pages in length, it extensively reports on his invention of a method for measuring magnetic power by means of a balance. The present work on magnetism was for Kircher an omnibus of scientific and also phantastic theories. He researched and measured magnetism in numerous situations and applied it to numerous fields of study, including cosmology, astronomy, geography, optics, electricity, medicine, metallurgy, animals, music, love, etc. He was the first to propose using magnetic declination to determine longitude. With the armorial bookplate of Hyacinth Theodore Baron (1706/07-1787), Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Paris, and library stamps of Dr. Timoteo Riboli (1809-1895). Somewhat browned and with a small defect in the engraved title-page, but still in good condition, binding slightly stained.

AI WEIWEI: CIRCLE OF ANIMALS - SIGNED BY THE ARTIST

Prestel Publishing, New York 2011 - 220pp, 140 color and 15 b&w illustrations. With bibliographies. "Ai Weiwei's "Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads" features twelve large-scale bronze animal heads, each depicting a segment of the ancient Chinese zodiac. As a major work of public art, it is an extraordinary accomplishment in its own right. But as this book explains, the origins and motivation behind the piece are as compelling as the work itself. Ai Weiwei based the sculpture on a complex zodiac fountain that was built for an imperial retreat in eighteenth-century China. When the retreat was looted by European soldiers, the fountain's bronze animal heads were stolen - only seven of the twelve are known to survive. By reimagining the work Ai Weiwei confronts uncomfortable truths within Chinese and Western history. This book compares Ai Weiwei's work to the original zodiac heads; features interviews with Ai Weiwei conducted at various periods during the sculpture's development; offers a historical overview of the events surrounding the fountain's looting; and follows the trail of the original heads as they are sold and resold amidst political furor. The book tells the riveting story behind a highly acclaimed piece of modern art, while providing an introduction to one of our generation's most important artists". A brand new, pristine example of a handful of copies of the first edition additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Ai Weiwei" in black marker on a specially designed "Circle of Animals - Zodiac Heads" printed bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. The celebrated dissident artist and activist had been arrested by Chinese authorities just prior to the 2011 New York installation of this piece, and so unable to travel, agreed to sign a limited number of these for the book's US publication.         Between Page and Screen

Los Angeles:: Otis College of Art,, 2011.. Edition of 12. 7 x 7"; 42 pages. Printed on a Vandercook proof press. Digitally set in URW Grotesk. Hand-printed from photopolymer plates on Rives RFK paper. Includes copy of trade edition. Amaranth Borsuk: "Between Page and Screen is a book of poems that contains no text, only stark black-and-white geometric shapes and a web address leading to betweenpageandscreen.com, where the reader follows instructions to display the book on his or her webcam. Our software detects the square markers in the book and projects poems mapped to the surface of the page. Because the animations move with the book, they appear to inhabit real three-dimensional space-a kind of digital pop-up book. "The poems - a series of cryptic letters between P and S, two lovers struggling to define the bounds of their relationship, do not exist on either page or screen, but in the augmented space between them opened up by the reader." One of the original letterpress edition created at Otis College of Art Lab Press, this is a display copy, unnumbered. A handwritten list of exhibitions in which it was displaced are listed.

Fred Hagstrom: "While the poem is certainly open to multiple interpretations, to me it has always been about the basic forces of nature, particularly about the renewal that comes in the cycle of life and death. The Haeckel images are some of the most beautiful drawings/prints I have seen in natural history illustrations. Radiolaria are a form of protozoa that produce intricate mineral skeletons. The forms of the actual specimens that make up the Haeckel illustrations are incredibly intricate and diverse. I was struck by the beauty of these forms from nature and wanted to pair them with a poem that I find equally beautiful.

        Fifty Shades of Grey

The Writer's Coffee Shop, 2011 The Writer's Coffee Shop, 2011. First Edition, the Hill Print Solutions print run - the rough analog of "third printing" of the first edition. Octavo (9" x 6"), photo-pictorial wraps designed by Jennifer McGuire and executed by Dreamstime, 372 pp. New. Faint spotting, as produced and shipped (all Hill copies of FSG I've personally seen have this issue; Hill copies are also iridescent under a scanner lamp, and images must be descreened), and lower left rear cover corner slightly pushed, also as originally shipped. Otherwise, Fine. New and never read. See scans. The memorable Fifty Shades of Grey started as an e-book issued by The Writer's Coffee Shop in2011. TWCS then contracted with Lulu Self-Publishing (for printing) and Lightning Source (for distribution) to fulfill a growing international wait list of hardcopy requests, then in January of 2012 with Hill Print Solutions to handle USA print-after-order requests; from January to May of 2012 (Random House acquired the rights in May), Hill printed 3,500 copies of Fifty Shades of Grey, 2,000 copies of Fifty Shades Darker, and 3,000 copies of Fifty Shades Freed. Some Hill copies of the first two titles are nevertheless dated 2011 (such as this one); the rest are dated 2012. The very first Lulu copies (of this title only - not the latter two in the trilogy) lacked a roman numeral at the top of the spine, apparently because it had not yet been decided that there would be a trilogy. All later copies of Fifty Shades of Grey, by Lulu OR Hill, as well as all copies of the second and third titles, have the respective roman numerals I, II, and II at the top of the spine. The number of copies of Fifty Shades of Grey lacking the roman numeral is unavailable information, but it is a very small number. All Lulu copies have the number 90000 above the bar code area on the back cover (though, to add to the collectible varieties, there are apparently a long-text rear cover and a short-text rear cover of these 2nd state Lulus; priority unknown, but short-text would most nearly - not exactly - match the true first state rear cover); all Hill copies have the number 51999 in that location. Hence, with regard to the Fifty Shades of Grey title, the Lulu copies with no roman numeral on the spine are the first printing of the first edition; the Lulu copies WITH a roman numeral can be thought of as the second printing; the 2011 Hill copies dated 2011 can be termed the third printing, and the Hill copies dated 2012, the fourth printing. Because printing was print-after-order, and done in response to wait lists of unknown size and growth rate, there may have been some Hill copies physically printed before some later Lulu copies; we'll almost certainly never know. This is the paperback, e-book-to-print-after-order world, and it's just different. It's certainly very rare for such a title to become the phenomenon this one has for collectors and the general public. Nevertheless, the above chronology is reasonable and based on statements from the principals - and it gives collectors four different forms of the first edition to collect. The Random House edition, then, is the second edition (Hill Print Solutions was just a subcontracted American printer for TWCS' first edition). This copy is a Hill copy, dated 2011, hence a third printing of the first edition. Yes, some early Lulu copies of all three titles were accompanied by black TWCS bookmarks bearing the respective titles, the number of these being apparently unknown. Also, some copies do refer to having been printed in Lexington, KY - number also unknown. Note: while there are now hardcover editions available, some showing the original 2011 copyright year, these are all later versions. All first edition copies of any of the three titles were softcover (paperback), and were published by The WCS. L47n
