'The Mint' and Later Writings About Service Life The publisher's quarter blue goatskin binding, Limited "Library Edition" #167, one of 180 issued thus

Fordingbridge, Hampshire: Castle Hill Press, 2010. Limited "Library Edition". Quarter goatskin. This Castle Hill Press limited edition publishes the original (1928) text of The Mint, together with a selection of Lawrence's later writings about service life. Of a total edition of 475, 180 copies were bound thus for subscribers, in quarter navy goatskin with raised spine bands and blind ruled compartments and transitions over blue cloth boards with navy ribbon marker, head and foot bands, and gilt top edge. Illustrated, gray endpapers feature an R.A.F. flying boat and the contents contain 22 photographs. This is an as-new, unread copy, both the binding and contents pristine, the limitation number “167” inked by the publisher on the title page verso. The book is housed in a publisher-supplied cardstock slipcase. The Mint is T. E. Lawrence's unstintingly candid portrait about life in Royal Air Force ranks. "I set out to give a picture of the R.A.F., and my picture might be impressive and clever if I showed only the shadow of it... but I was not making a work of art, but a portrait." T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935) found fame as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity which he would spend the rest of his famously short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence told the tale of this time in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a work with a tortuous writing, editing, and publishing history culminating in posthumous publication. Perhaps equally tortuous is the tale of how this story about the R.A.F. was written and published. In a state of nervous exhaustion following the First World War, his work on the post-war settlement, and writing and re-writing Seven Pillars of Wisdom, in 1922, Lawrence enlisted in the ranks of the R.A.F. under the name of John Hume Ross. He swiftly concluded "there is grand stuff here, and if I could write it..." so he began making notes "scribbled at night, between last post and lights out, in bed." In January 1923 his identity became public and he was discharged from the R.A.F., but allowed to re-enlist two and a half years later, this time using the surname "Shaw", under which he had meanwhile served in the Tank Corps. On re-enlistment, he resumed making notes. In 1927, while serving in Karachi, Lawrence arranged these notes into a manuscript which he circulated to a small number of people, including Air Marshal Hugh Trenchard. As with Seven Pillars of Wisdom, publishers were eager, but Lawrence resisted, in part due to Trenchard's concerns. A saga followed in which efforts were made to control publication via uncirculated copyright editions in both the U.S. and Britain; the book remained unavailable to the public. Lawrence made revisions in the last months of his life with a possible view to publication in a private edition (as he had done with the 1926 Subscriber's Edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom), but the work remained unpublished until 1955, after the death of an officer described unfavorably in the text. Even then, the British edition blanked out objectionable words and substituted name changes to avoid libel. In 2009 Castle Hill Press, the premier editors and fine press publishers of material by and about T. E. Lawrence, published the most comprehensive edition of The Mint to date, containing the full 1928 text of The Mint together with a selection of Lawrence's later writings about service life. “The narrative of Lawrence's RAF years therefore begins in 1922 and ends with his retirement in February 1935... The result is a far more interesting version of Lawrence's second book.” In 2010, Castle Hill Press published this “Library Edition” containing the 1928 text and “a slightly shortened selection of Lawrence's later writings about service life.” For reference to the original publication of The Mint see O'Brien A166.

        Jannerman’ (nights )

[N.p.]: [Self-published], [2010] - 12mo (140 × 90 mm), pp.[54] (5 leaves removed from rear). 39 original c-type photographs pasted in (inc. two on the covers). Tan saddle-sewn wrappers, title in letraset to front; light wear. Maddock’s presentation inscription in pencil to front inside cover. Near-fine. A unique notebook album, comprising of 39 original photographs showing aspects of Plymouth nightlife, taken whilst Maddock was working on God Forgotten Face (2011). The title is derived from the word janner, a local nickname defined by Cyril Tawney in his book Grey Funnel Lines: Traditional Song & Verse of the Royal Navy (1987), as a term describing a native of Devon, but more particularly in Naval circles anyone from the Plymouth area. This album was produced to support an exhibition proposal. [With:] MADDOCK, Robin. God Forgotten Face. (London): Trolley, (2011). 8vo (215 × 164 mm), pp.[192]. Colour Photo-graphs. Poem by Charles Bukowski, text by Owen Hatherley. Pink endpapers. Colour photo-illustrated paper-covered boards. Signed by Maddock in blue ink on first page. Fine. First edition, signed. In this, his second book, Maddock continues his examination of English society by photographing Plymouth, a town where he has long-standing family ties. The title is derived from the Philip Larkin poem Plymouth written in 1945, and the words ‘Last kingdom of a god forgotten face ’. Gerry Badger writes that Maddock’s ‘view of things might be indeterminate but, unlike many young photographers, this does not extend to his picture-making’ (The Photobook).         Lee Lozano: Notebooks 1967-70

Primary Information (30 April 2010). Häftad bok. Transiting Pop art, Feminist Expressionism, Conceptualism and Minimalism, Lee Lozano (1930-1999) sits alongside Eva Hesse and Hannah Wilke as a radical and influential model for younger generations of female artists. Lozano's notebooks, which she approached as drawings, and which were later dismantled and sold as individual pages, became a part of her artmaking at the height of her fame in the late 1960s. Reproduced here for the first time, as an affordably-priced facsimile reprint, the three notebooks collected here, which were kept between 1967-1970, contain sketches for her Wave paintings, writings about the trajectory of her artistic process and the language pieces that she became famous for prior to her withdrawal from the art world. They thus constitute the fullest and richest document on an artist whose relevance and profile have recently seen a steady ascent.

        The Story of Annabelle Ant.

N.p. n.d. Small quarto. (ii), 36pp. This is a unique pre-production edition of Mary E. Williamson's children's book, which seems to never have been published. The text is handwritten in black ink, and the illustrations are hand-drawn and colored with ink and paint, all on boards. The story follows an old, hardworking ant who wins a contest to craft the queen ant's wedding dress. While Luckett is largely unknown, Williamson was involved in the world of publishing throughout her many careers. After serving as a pilot in the WASP (Women Air Force Service Pilots) program in World War II, she acted as the public realtions director for the Kansas City Tuberculosis Society and taught at the Department of Speech and Mass Communication at the University of Nebraska Omaha, where she also acted as the Dean for the College of Fine Arts, University Relations Director, and, eventually, Chair of the Communications Department. She was also an associate of the Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press, Vice President of Nebraska Cable Television, and a constant advocate for Nebraska small businesses. In 2010, she was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for her service as a WASP. The book, though apparently never published, reflects Williamson's values of entrepeneurship, women's empowerment, and the promotion of local voices. Bound in thin black morocco over boards. General wear at outer hinges, corners bumped, occasional tears to inner boards, pages 27 and 29 partially detached, and pages 7 and 9 completely detached. Very good, with Williamson's own typescript and handwritten comments laid in.

        Trees

Pacific Editions, [San Francisco] 2010 - Number 17 of 30, 4.25" by 12" by 2", 16 pp., signed by W.S. Merwin and Charles Hobson. Charles Hobson, book artist extraordinaire, delights again with "Trees", accompanied by its own miniature flashlight to create dancing shadows of the trees themselves. "The impetus to use palm trees as a visual accompaniment to the poem came from the return address in Hawaii on the letter from W.S. Merwin giving his permission. The poem can be read by standing up the first pages and using it to prop each page against it as the pages are turned. The small tree in the opening at the front of the book is used to suggest the beginning of a recollection of trees in some distant, remembered time, following one of the threads of the poem. When fully "accordioned-out" the book offers a succession of palm trees that can be positioned on different sides of the standing pages, giving a front and back view of the same image. A large architectural model palm tree sits in the window cut in the last panel which is backed by a transparent image of the night sky. The monotypes of palm trees are reproduced as high resolution digital prints on transparency film. The monotypes lay over the words of the poem which have been set letterpress to follow the shape of the palm tree trunks - the words of the poem climbing the trees. When one shines the flashlight on the tree and through the opening at the back of the book the light projects mysterious shadows of trees against the the luminous night sky. There are several ways to orient the book, much as the poem offers subtly varied interpretations. It can be set on its side which presents the type reading from left to right (rather than up and down) but results in the trees having fallen." (N.B., from the web site of Charles Hobson.) ***DESCRIPTION: Self wrappers, Strathmore 2-ply museum board and acid free foam core with architectural model trees, housed in a wooden box, illustration inlaid to the underside of the lid and the inside of the box, foil stamped title to the outer edge of the box, palm tree illustrations made as monotypes and reproduced as high-resolution digital prints on transparent film, Poppl-Laudatio type, 16 pp., limited edition, number 17 of 30, signed by W.S. Merwin and Charles Hobson. ***CONDITION: This copy is like new, with all the delicate pieces perfectly intact, including the instruction inserts, separate title leaf, and inserted print, leaves are bright, hinges strong, there is a small finger print on the colophon that appears to have happened during production, otherwise a beautiful copy, a unique way to read Merwin; fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.         Chromes

3 Bände Leinen im Schuber William Egglestons standing as one of the masters of colour photography is widely acknowledged. But the gradual steps by which he transformed from an unknown into a leading artist are less well known. Steidl has undertaken to trace these steps in an ambitious series of publications. Before Color (Steidl, 2010) explored Egglestons revelatory early black and white images, while Chromes is an edit of more than 5,000 Kodachromes and Ektachromes taken from ten chronologically ordered binders found in a safe in the Eggleston Artistc Trust. This archive had once been used by John Szarkowski who selected the forty-eight images printed in Egglestons seminal book William Egglestons Guide, while the rest of the archive has remained almost entirely unpublished. This book presents Egglestons early Memphis imagery, his testing of colour and compositional strategies, and the development towards the poetic snapshot. In short, Chromes shows a master in the making.

Procreant Hymn (Original Version / Alternative Version)

[Monmouthshire]: The Old Stile Press, 2010. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Gill, Eric. No. 11 of 60 numbered copies, plus 15 copies hors commerce. An innovative two-volume publication by The Old Stile Press, reprinting the original Golden Cockerel Press edition in one volume and printing for the first time an "alternative version" using Eric Gill's alternate illustrations, from his copper engravings. Of the five illustrations in the original Golden Cockerel edition - "God Sending," "Earth Waiting," "Earth Inviting," "Dalliance" and "Earth Receiving" - Gill made alternative plates of four (although only three were advertised in the note to subscribers laid in at the rear of that edition). These alternative illustrations "basically follow the composition of the published versions but the male and female figures, already naked in the published versions, are presented in a state of realism which would clearly have been unexpected (and, in many quarters, unacceptable) at that time" (per the Preface). Both volumes follow the pagination of the Golden Cockerel edition, but employ a larger page size and Gill's Ariel typeface. Patterned paper over boards, gilt stamped spine, in a matching slipcase. Folio (12-1/2" x 9-1/2"), pagination: unnumbered, though ~24 pages per volume. Fine, clean and crisp condition, in a near fine slipcase with only minor rubbing to edges. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.         Trees

[San Francisco]: Pacific Editions, 2010. Limited Edition. Accordion Style. Fine. Hobson, Charles. Number 17 of 30, 4.25" by 12" by 2", 16 pp., signed by W.S. Merwin giving his permission... South Polar Times 1902–1911. Centenary Edition; [together with] Volume IV.

London: Orskey–Bonham–Niner; & Cambridge: Scott Polar Research Institute - Bonham, 2002 & 2010 - 4 volumes quarto. Original blue cloth, title gilt to spines and front boards, front boards with mounted colour illustrations within gilt panel, blue silk page-markers. An excellent set. Numerous illustrations in colour and black and white. First facsimile edition, comprising a facsimile of the first three volumes originally published in 1907–14, one of 350 copies thus, together with the fourth volume never previously published, number 153 of 500 copies of the text held by the Scott Polar Institute, accompanied by an extensive introduction by Ann Savours which details the production of the South Polar Times, biographies of the explorers who contributed to it, and a short section on "the tradition of polar publishing." The South Polar Times was originally produced to relieve the boredom of the cold, dark winter nights and raise the spirits of the men on board. As well as essays on seals, whales and penguins, there were comic poems, puzzles, stories and cartoons. Scott's comments in his original preface suggest that the journal achieved its goal: "I can see again a row of heads bent over a fresh monthly number to scan the latest efforts of our artists, and I can hear the hearty laughter at the sallies of our humourists and the general chaff when some sly allusion found its way home."
