        The South Polar Times.

London & Cambridge: Smith, Elder, & Co., [volume IV:] Scott Polar Research Institute, 1907–14 & 2010 - 4 volumes, quarto. Original navy blue cloth, titles gilt to spines and upper boards, inset coloured pictorial decoration to upper boards within gilt rope-twist borders, all edges gilt. Volume I slightly rumpled at head of spine, fore-edge of half-title and frontispiece stained and a little ragged; volume II spine slightly rolled; volume III spine slightly rolled and with a few nicks to extremities; minor marks and abrasions to bindings of volume I-III, and scattered foxing across the three volumes; volume IV in excellent condition. Profusely illustrated with chromolithographic and black and white plates - some mounted, a number from Ponting photographs - and text illustrations, including caricatures and silhouettes of expedition members. First collected edition. Volumes I and II limited to 250 copies (these both numbered 192), volume III limited to 350 copies (this numbered 261); volume IV number 192 of 500 copies. "A visually exact reproduction of The South Polar Times originally issued during the Antarctic expeditions of Robert F. Scott, the first two volumes were published in 1907 with a preface by Scott. The original had been edited and printed by Ernest Shackleton who produced five issues between April and August 1902, each in a single typewritten copy. After Scott sent Shackleton home in March 1903 the next volume was edited by Louis Bernacchi, from April to August. Edward Wilson was the principal illustrator, though contributions and illustrations came from both officers and crew." (Books on Ice). The third volume was edited by Apsley Cherry-Garrard during Scott's last expedition of 1911, and published in 1914. Together they form what is perhaps the most personal of the printed documents to have come out of the Heroic Era of Antarctic exploration, revealing the often contradictory aspects of the participant's personalities. As Scott explained in his preface, publication was proposed in "March 1902 [when] we were busily preparing for our first Antarctic winter as we watched the sun sinking towards its long rest. We knew that daylight would shortly disappear for four whole months, and our thoughts turned naturally to the long dark period before us and the means by which we could lighten its monotony." The expedition scientists were to "write luminously on their special subjects, and to record scientific events of general interest", while "lighter matter" indulging "any shy vein of sentiment or humour that might exist among us" was encouraged under "the cloak of anonymity." The exercise certainly seems to have achieved its aim, as Scott recounts; "I can see again a row of heads bent over a fresh monthly number to scan the latest efforts of our artists, and I can hear the hearty laughter at the sallies of our humorists and the general chaff when some sly allusion found its way home." The fourth volume was never previously published, and is a facsimile of the text held by the Scott Polar Institute, accompanied by an extensive introduction by Ann Savours which details the production of the South Polar Times. Clean, bright sets that can be handled with some degree of impunity, such as this, are distinctly uncommon. The weight of the text-blocks, which would tax even traditionally bound volumes, has in most cases certainly proved too much for the gutta percha bindings which are "now mostly perished" (Taurus). In this set off-setting from the chromolithographs is minimal, with only one trace of the adhesion often found (volume II); and the "handsome bindings", with "finely coloured printed scenes" and striking gilt-work, remain large free of scratching and scuffing, with inner joints not cracked. In all an excellent set of this important record of the human side of polar endeavour. Books on Ice 7.7; Rosove 287; Spence 1094; Taurus 42 & 79. [Attributes: First Edition]

Sydney: Public Pictures, 2010. Third printing. Thick quarto, cloth in dustjacket, pp. 360 profusely illustrated. All editions of this reference on Campbell have sold out and are scarce in the market. As new copy still in the original shrink-wrap. "Born in 1960 in Sydney, Cressida Campbell is one of Australia's most uncompromising artists. She studied at East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School) and the Yoshida Hanga Academy in Tokyo. As well as holding twenty solo exhibitions in Sydney, Brisbane and London, she has also contributed to numerous group exhibitions. Her work has been acquired by many public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the British Museum and by private collectors in Australia and internationally. The Woodblock Painting of Cressida Campbell, a comprehensive survey of her work from 1984 to 2008, spanning 25 years, displays an artist who works from inner compulsion rather than public ambition. Assembled here are nearly 300 images, carefully edited into nine distinct sections. It s a book that displays a sensitive and introspective imagination at work; a book that allows the pictures to speak for themselves. Edited by Peter Crayford, with an Introduction by John McDonald, art critic of the Sydney Morning Herald, a Forward by Edmund Capon, director of the Art Gallery of NSW, and a catalogue raisonne by Brett Stone." - from the publisher

        Mad Day Out

This is a very small boxed set edition of 250. Mad Day Out is a profound pictorial document of the Beatles taken during the summer of 1968, containing rare and unseen photographs accompanied by a full length commentary by world renowned cinematographer Stephen Goldblatt. A stylishly designed volume of 110 pages master printed by Ben Zlotkin of Edition One in Berkeley, California. Also included is a limited edition archival print of the Beatles made by Stephen Goldblatt that has never been published before. All books and prints are signed and numbered. Hand bound and finished in white linen, the book is housed in a custom chocolate linen covered box, lined in paisley satin, with a hidden compartment to hold the print. Books are numbered 1 to 250 (this copy is 193) and signed for authentication by Stephen Goldblatt. Perfect for Beatles collectors and photography lovers. This book and print was created by special agreement with Mr. Goldblatt as a fundraiser for Fotovision. The condition of this beautiful signed book and print set is near mint. This is a truly wonderful copy of this very rare title with virtually no flaws whatsoever. However, I will point out two very minor issues. There is a small raised bump under the linen of the box (small enough that it can't be photographed and was present when fist purchased). Also a tiny mark on the font cover next to the "M" in "Mad Day Out". This is hardly visible, see pic 7 for confirmation. There are no other visible flaws. The set is Near Mint.

Desert Mob 20th Anniversary Print Folio

Darwin : Basil Hall Editions, 2010. Folding clamshell box with a unique piece of Tjanpi Desert weaving set into the lid, housing 40 original woodblocks by Aboriginal artists from 38 art centres across Australia. Limited to 10 copies, accompanied by certificates of authenticity from each art centre. In 2010 a commemorative folio of original artworks was created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Desert Mob, the annual symposium and exhibition of Desart, the peak industry association of Central Australian Aboriginal art and craft centres. Each of the art centres were sent a woodblock and printmaking equipment, and an artist was invited to produce the matrix from which an original print would be printed. The publishers then printed 20 copies fo each print, 10 copies for sale at the art centres as individual works, and 10 copies for collation into a anniversary folio as presented here. The folio is adorned with an individually commissioned Tjanpi weaving by a weaver from the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara lands. In September 2010 the blocks themselves, the panel, the folios and the 40 individual prints were exhibited at the Araluen arts centre as part of Desert Mob 2010.         'The Mint' and Later Writings About Service Life The publisher's quarter blue goatskin binding, Limited issue #60, one of 180 issued thus

Fordingbridge, Hampshire: Castle Hill Press, 2010. Limited Edition. Quarter goatskin. This Castle Hill Press limited edition publishes the original (1928) text of The Mint, together with a selection of Lawrence’s later writings about service life. Of a total edition of 475, 180 copies were bound thus for subscribers, in quarter navy goatskin with raised spine bands, blind bordered compartments, and blind rule transitions over blue cloth boards with navy ribbon marker, head and foot bands, gilt top edge and housed in a matching blue cloth slipcase lined with blue paper. The illustrated, gray endpapers feature an R.A.F. flying boat and the contents contain 22 photographs. This is a pristine, as-new, unread copy, the book flawless, the slipcase with only slight shelf scuffing to the bottom edge. The Mint is T.E. Lawrence's unstintingly candid portrait about life in Royal Air Force ranks. "I set out to give a picture of the R.A.F., and my picture might be impressive and clever if I showed only the shadow of it... but I was not making a work of art, but a portrait." T.E. Lawrence (1888-1935) found fame as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity which he would spend the rest of his famously short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence told the tale of this time in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a work with a tortuous writing, editing, and publishing history culminating in posthumous publication. Perhaps equally tortuous is the tale of how this story about the R.A.F. was written and published. In a state of nervous exhaustion following the First World War, his work on the post-war settlement, and writing and re-writing Seven Pillars of Wisdom, in 1922, Lawrence enlisted in the ranks of the R.A.F. under the name of John Hume Ross. He swiftly concluded "there is grand stuff here, and if I could write it..." so he began making notes "scribbled at night, between last post and lights out, in bed." In January 1923 his identity became public and he was discharged from the R.A.F., but allowed to re-enlist two and a half years later, this time using the surname "Shaw", under which he had meanwhile served in the Tank Corps. On re-enlistment, he resumed making notes. In 1927, while serving in Karachi, Lawrence arranged these notes into a manuscript which he circulated to a small number of people, including Air Marshal Hugh Trenchard. As with Seven Pillars of Wisdom, publishers were eager, but Lawrence resisted, in part due to Trenchard's concerns. A saga followed in which efforts were made to control publication via uncirculated copyright editions in both the U.S. and Britain; the book remained unavailable to the public. Lawrence made revisions in the last months of his life with a possible view to publication in a private edition (as he had done with the 1926 Subscriber's Edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom), but the work remained unpublished until 1955, after the death of an officer described unfavorably in the text. Even then, the British edition blanked out objectionable words and substituted name changes to avoid libel. In 2008 Castle Hill Press, the premier editors and fine press publishers of material by and about T. E. Lawrence, published the most comprehensive edition of The Mint to date, containing the full 1928 text of The Mint together with a selection of Lawrence’s later writings about service life. “The narrative of Lawrence’s RAF years therefore begins in 1922 and ends with his retirement in February 1935... The result is a far more interesting version of Lawrence's second book.” In 2010, Castle Hill Press published this “Library Edition” containing the 1928 text and “a slightly shortened selection of Lawrence’s later writings about service life.” For reference to the original publication of The Mint see O’Brien A166.
