Corpus Christianorum. Lexicon Latinitatis Medii Aevi Regni Legionis (s. VIII-1230) imperfectum Léxico latinorromance del reino de León (s. VIII-1230)

Turnhout Brepols 2010 - Hardback, LXXVII+805 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503534473. Published in 2010, this Latin-Spanish lexicon, or more precisely Latin-Romance-Spanish, studies the vocabulary of historiographical and diplomatic texts written in the kingdom of León - with the exception of Galicia - between the eighth century and 1230, the date of the definitive union between the kingdoms of León and Castille. Each entry provides all the written variants of the term in question, its etymology, its meaning or meanings, numerous examples presented in relatively extended contexts, and thorough commentaries and linguistic and historical notes. As well as constituting an indispensable tool for anyone interested in the history of the kingdom of León, it also of wider interest, especially linguistic. Indeed, the texts analysed are written in a language that may be described as both 'Latino-Romance' and 'diplomatic medieval Latin' (Cf. Introduction, p. LXIII). Languages: Latin, Spanish. 0 g. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Product Description:Special edition of Flor Garduño's Trilogy, accompanied by an original B/W print signed by the artist by pencil on dorso. It is a magical land that where Flor Garduño moves, holding her camera. A land reminiscent of Mexico, where she was born; a land pervaded by myths and legends; a land plunged into a voluptuous and sensual nature, kissed by the sun of those exotic and ancestral places. Trilogy is a collection of the works Garduño realized throughout many years of photography between Mexico and Europe. Her great and magnificent visual production develops through a "dance" in three movements. The overture is Bestiarium, in which real and fictional images of enchanted animals come to life as metaphors of our dreams and passions. Then we have Fantastic women, a celebration of the feminine universe and of the mystery and sensuality that spring from the female body. The dance ends with Silent natures, where Garduño contemplates wilderness because, quoting the photographer herself, "whenever I think of Silent natures, I must confess that I created these photographs for myself, to maintain my playful spirit throughout all these years." Flor Garduño was born in Mexico and studied visual arts at the Academy of San Carlos, where she focused on the search for the structural aspects of form and space. She gave up her studies to work as a darkroom assistant for Manuel Álvarez Bravo, one of Mexico's most prestigious photographers. Renowned worldwide, Garduño has been awarded many prizes thanks to her works that have been exposed and published all over the world. Trilogy is the final consecration of thirty years of the photographer's activity.

        Joe Average.

Victoria, Australia 2010 - Square 32mo. (14)pp., accordionfold, decorated on both sides of the page. An original artist's book by Jennifer Gibney, with hand-drawn text and pen illustrations in black, sepia, and sanguine ink, housed within a hand-painted and decorated wooden box. The story concerns a jester-like character who is overwhelmed by the pressures of life until he opens a book and "opens a dream," escaping into the endless possibilities of his imagination. On the lid of the box is a painting of Joe Average with the word "ordinary" repeated over and over on his clothing and hat, trapped beneath a lattice of textured brass strips. A porcelain sculpture of Joe Average, in the same pose as on the illustration on the lid of the box, is laid into the box on top of the book. Gibney is both a painter and a sculptor, with a background in graphics and book illustration, and she drew on all of these areas of expertise to create this unusual book. With a colophon card laid in, signed by the author. Extremely fine.

Nacre. Six Poems by Ruth Fainlight. Eight Mezzotints by Judith Rothchild.

Verdigris Press, Octon, France 2010 - First Edition, signed limited edition, one of 42 copies only, from a total edition of 50 (8 deluxe copies with one of the original copper plates) all on Hahnemulhe paper, each hand-numbered and signed by the author, Ruth Fainlight, and the artist, Judith Rothchild. Page size: 8-1/2 x 9-7/8 inches; 20pp. + colophon. Bound by Mark Lintott: leporello style with wrap- around boards of marbled paper made by Judith Rothchild over boards in grey with hints of deep pink and pale blue, raspberry-colored linen hinges, title, author, artist, and press printed in black in the spine, title on front panel, housed in custom-made matching grey paper over boards slipcase. The text has been hand set and printed letterpress in Vendome Romain on an Albion press of 1867 by Mark Lintott. The artist herself printed her mezzotints. The text has debossing on the title page with the title, NACRE, repeated twice in blind on either side of the printed title. The shaped colophon is debossed in the form of a cowrie shell. Noted American poet (living in London), Ruth Fainlight, has contributed six poems; the first "Pearls" has four sections; the fifth, "Clam Chowder" has two sections. Judith Rothchild has contributed eight mezzotints relating to or inspiring Ms. Fainlight's verse. The book was collaboration with each artist reacting and creating to her friend's work. The verse speculates on the beauty of the pearl and how it has been valued throughout the ages - reserved for the wealthy and powerful. Ms. Fainlight asks (in "Pearls") "Entire villages holding their breath: how many divers' lives lost in the oyster beds for a royal crown?" The first mezzotint certainly captures the mysterious, dark, lustrous glamour of this "crystalline substance iridescent nacre" and the interplay between text and image is set from this beginning. As Ms. Fainlight's text turns to the sensuous associations of love, oysters - with great subtlety - the images take on a sensuality of their own. A stunning book that is at once provocative, intimate, and philosophical and more than a bit Proustian. An object as simple as a cowrie shell button causes the author to recall her mother's treasured memory. The reader / viewer is compelled to join in this lovely remembrance - and perhaps recall something of one's own. See an Image. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Red Cross

[Bever, Switzerland]. 2010. Artist's book, one of 13 copies only, all on Epson Archival Matte paper, signed by the artist, Viola Kaeumlen and numbered on the colophon. Page size: 8-1/16 x 5-11/16 inches; 54pp. Bound by the artist: white cloth over boards printed in red with title and author on spine and front panel. Each copy of this limited edition is housed in a hand-stitched tan cloth copy of old Red Cross Aid Bag with copy of World War II Red Cross hand-stitched on front made by the students of the "Ufficina" in Samedan, Switzerland - an institution that provides work for handicapped people. The Red Cross Aid Bag is laid into a stainless steel box with lid 9-7/8 x 7-1/4 inches with the Red Cross emblem outlined in double broken brown line, title and author printed in outlined letters on each of the long sides. The artist's statement / colophon reveals that the artist / author, on finding her grandfather's pocket watch which had been returned to her grandmother after his death in World War I was moved to honor the Red Cross. Her grandfather's watch, with the face damaged, the hands missing, eerily symbolized the destructive power of war. The International Red Cross had returned the watch, reassuring the owner's widow that her husband's remains had been taken care of in a humane way amid the turmoil of war. On a more immediate note, the International Red Cross had been instrumental in helping the artist's husband leave conflict-torn Angola. Ms. Kaumlen visited the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva, taking photographs which are here combined with her own writings as well as religious and historical texts. The artist collaged the photographs, texts, her grandfather's watch and other elements and printed all digitally, using Ambulance Shotgun as font for quotations and texts and Helvetica fonts for introduction and colophon. This is a moving homage to the International Red Cross with stunning images. See an Image.

Nacre. Six Poems by Ruth Fainlight. Eight Mezzotints by Judith Rothchild

Verdigris Press Octon, France: Verdigris Press. 2010. First Edition, signed limited edition, one of 42 copies only, from a total edition of 50 (8 deluxe copies with one of the original copper plates) all on Hahnemulhe paper, each hand-numbered and signed by the author, Ruth Fainlight, and the artist, Judith Rothchild.

Sooner or Later (Words Won't Matter)

[New York. 2010]. Unique artist's book, on archival paper, signed and dated by the artist, Sandra Jackman, on the inside back cover. Page size: 4 x 6 inches; 76pp. decorated followed by 26 blank pages. Bound: black leather with the title stamped in blind on the front panel and the author / artist's name, Sandra Jackman, on the back panel, with small white figure above name painted on leather by the artist, top and bottom edge decorated in paint and ink, fore edge sheets painted various colors, black and white headbands, housed in black cloth over boards slipcase, collaged with pen and ink of man's face on front with the tit; hand lettered by the author/artist, who has also lettered her name below title, back of slipcase with original collage of grotesque figure - face and torso covered in black for face and white for torso over title spelled out in 3-d gold letters. The author / artist has created this tale in words and images with archival and acid free inks. Some of the pages are collaged, some are highlighted with red ink, or gold, some have silver paper, one of the pages has a circular onlay that opens to reveal text below, one of the page spreads has both the recto and verso cut away to reveal parts that interlock, original negative and photograph also bound in. The author tells us the story: a "seductive promise (by the Ruling Bodies) to gift a female child (whose bloodline might be significant) with the power of words to persuade sets off hostilities and jealousies amongst various beings that co-exist in a landscape where a mysterious spirit known as the Bitter Poet causes unrest. Time moves forward though clocks no longer tick. The reader is welcome to read in to this book whatever suits their thinking." Sandra Jackman's graphic novel, hand written and painted, is a microcosm of today's' ills. Test sites, landlords, numbers that don't matter, monsters of the mundane all decorate / haunt these pages, until, finally, words don't matter and the pages are blank. A terrifying parable of our times. See an Image.

She has also signed four of the five books contained in the first box. Lidded outer box: 7.5 x 7.5 x 8 inches; original photographs by the artist printed on Epson Premium Presentation Matte paper and presented under TruVue non-reflective glass with "frames" of various black, pale blue, and gold Asian papers over binder's board, bookcloth, trimmed with various brass decorative elements, against a ground of brown cloth over boards, with lid of lime green and terracotta cloth over boards with two different papers both of lime green on the bottom and black, blue and gold with glass panel in center allowing a view of the inner boxes and books, the glass surrounded by rubbed brass nails. Open inner box: 6 x 6 x 6 inches made of black bookcloth over binders board and terracotta silk cords, terracotta cloth over boards base. Four accordion books: 5 x 5.5 x .25 inches containing 12 pages each, hand-sewn accordion style binding, with boards covered in various Asian papers, endpapers of Stonehenge paper coated with shellac. Small inner box with lid: 5.5 x 3.5 x 4.25 inches, black bookcloth over boards, terracotta cloth on bottom, lid of terracotta and lime green cloth over boards with black and gold Asian paper on reverse of lid with title, artist and date, printed in black on lime green paper label, brass decorative trim and wood knob. John David's accordion book: 5.5 x 3.5 x .75 inches; 22pp; bound accordion style with green printable fabric bookcloth reproducing image of original "Standard Diary" used by Ms. Torgerson's great-grandfather. Photographic image of very rural landscape with white house on the last page following the end of the text, printed digitally on Stonehenge, enhanced with pastel and sealed with polymer varnish. The text reads, "Today we got things pretty well fixed up. I feel good at home. I like it here right well. It is a very hardy house and a very pleasant place to live." On the reverse are printed copies of some daily journal entries over photographs of mountains and fields. The book is held together with a green leather and black cord and black button sewn to the leather. Ms. Torgerson notes that her great- grandfather's diary gives accounts of his daily activities but rarely mentions how he feels about things. The text used on the reverse of his day book, starting "Today..." is as close as he comes to a personal revelation. Ms. Torgerson's own verse, as printed in the five books housed in the large open box - J.D. Shortess text in the small, closed box - is as open as the box that houses it. Haunting collaged images of faces over prairie landscape, stone walls built by hand as the land was cleared, rivers through virgin landscape, one white house lovingly built by the first homesteaders, are interspersed with the text pages that refer to an earlier time when pioneers left the confines of the city for open land - or does it? Is every life a new construct? Ms. Torgerson's verse and images are at once a paean to her pioneering ancestors as well as musings on the life lived by us all. Her use of boxes - with glass lid or open or closed - provides the perfect vehicle to explore her images and text. The beauty of the images and the probing text compel the reader / viewer forward, asking us to explore further. She has constructed a beautiful book and book object and, in so doing, enables us to participate in the "taming of the wilderness" that was the American frontier. See an Image.

        The Word

(San Francisco, 2010). Quarto. 10ff. Original calligraphic manuscript by Ingmire of the text from a section of Paz’s poem “Blanco.” This poem, which was published in 1967, has been linked to Paz’s time in India, and it can be read as a figurative exploration of Indian religious philosophy. “The spirit is an invention of the body/ The body is an invention of the world/ The world is an invention of the spirit”, all of which is rooted in the Word, which also harkens back to the Logos at the beginning of the Gospel of John. In treating this text, Ingmire has envisioned the first section of the poem as a text that is revealed from an abstract drawing on the facing page, as if emerging from the blotting of the drying ink. This treatment reaches its climax in the center spread, where the text is written in alternating lines of black and raised gold against a marbled background, and what appeared as strange and jarring is suddenly transformed into something harmonious and striking. A bold interpretation by Ingmire, whose work has balanced traditional calligraphy with modern, innovative techniques and an astounding ability in his use of gold script. Bound in heavy handmade paper wrappers with the title in vertical blocks on the front cover. Housed in a complimentary folding case by the Foolscap Press. Extremely fine.
