        Seven Stories

Göttingen:: Steidl Verlag,, 2009. Göttingen: Steidl Verlag, 2009. First edition. 7 volumes with the original slipcase. Signed twice by Robert Frank, once in volume 1 and on the front of the slipcase. Each volume is in fine condition, as is the box. Seven Stories brings together sequences of single images Frank has been compiling to create books of new work. As always the photographs and stories relate to Frank's life and milieu, his homes in Mabou and New York, or a trip to China or Spain. This collection of small books is a new stage in the practice of this remarkable artist who continually challenges the limits of photography and film and strives to avoid repeating himself.Robert Frank is the photographer of the classic work "The Americans" and has been compared to a modern-day de Tocqueville for his original perspective of American society. He was born in Switzerland, and though he was initially optimistic about United States society and culture, Frank came to believe the fast pace of American life derived from an overemphasis on money. His photography is an honest portrayal of an often bleak and lonely urbanized country.

A Book of Commandments, for the Government of the Church of Christ, Organized According to Law, on the 6th of April, 1830

Salt Lake City, UT: Scrub Oak Bindery, 2009. 1/29. Leather bound. NEW. 160pp. Vegisemo-Quarto (24mo) [12 cm] Full leather. Fine. Housed in a custom clamshell that also includes a separately bound foreword by Peter Crawley. This edition is limited to 29 lettered copies. This edition is hand-sewn and bound using techniques consistent with historical styles. The deluxe edition also includes two letterpress printed title page variants for framing or display, as well as space for a leaf. A fine letterpress replica of the 1833 Book of Commandments, the most sought after LDS text, of which only twenty-nine copies are known to exist. The plates used for the replicas were scanned from the Wilford Woodruff copy. The paper for the book was made by hand at Tryst Press using linen and cotton fibers with an oak leaf watermark. The books are printed using photopolymer plates on a Vandercook proofing press.& & "With the prospects of a Mormon press came the possibility of printing Joseph Smith's revelation and making them more widely available to the members of the Church. At a conference in Hiram, Ohio, in November 1831, it was resolved to print the revelations in book form under the title Book of Commandments in an edition of 10,000. Five months later, when Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, and other journeyed to Independence with paper for the new Mormon press, the size of the edition was reduced to 3000. Five signatures comprising 160 pages had been printed when the printing shop was destroyed on July 20, 1833 by an angry anti-Mormon mob. Sheets of the unfinished book were salvaged from the wreckage of the shop; some were collected as they blew about the streets of Independence. From these sheets a few copies of the Book of Commandments were assembled. Twenty-nine copies have surfaced in 176 years, most in homemade bindings - a reflection of the salvaged nature of the book. The title page occurs in two states, with and without an ornamental border.& & Just what the completed Book of Commandments would have contained is a matter of conjecture. Considering those revelations published earlier in the Star and those published subsequently in the Doctrine and Covenants, it would appear that the completed book would have contained at least one and possibly two additional signatures." - Peter Crawley.

        The Age of Orphans

Bloomsbury, 2009. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. Fine unread copy in likewise fine dw - SIGNED by the authoress. Synopsis: Kurdistan, Persia. A village high in the Zagros mountains. A small green-eyed boy wrestles free from his mother and climbs atop a straw and mud hut to gaze at the dusty landscape; the jagged mountains and azure sky, the cattle in the distance. With his arms stretched out beside him he pretends to be a bird, to lift up and soar over this land: the land of his fathers and forefathers. Kurdish land. Soon after the boy is ritually initiated into manhood, messengers from the hills bring whispers of war; rumours that the Shah's army is moving from village to village, stamping out any tribal rebellion that may stand in the way of the creation of a unified 'Iran'. Just nine years old, the boy must stand alongside his men and fight for their land. Years later, Reza Pahlavi Khourdi can only faintly recall the brutal murder of his father and cousins. Orphaned on the bloody battlefield, conscripted into the great column of the army and given a new name, he has quickly risen up the ranks, proving both his prowess in battle and allegiance to the Shah's troops. Now in Tehran, Reza is about to marry to a beautiful, educated, city girl, and become a Capitian. But there are stirrings within his heart. He will soon move west to be the Shah's servant in Kermanshah, the land of his birth, and a figurehead of modernization. At once rich and bleak, The Age of Orphans unleashes a tapestry of untold horrors and pleasures, of blood and smoke, hopes, dreams and desires. It is a profound and darkly poetic story of a land roughly sewn together under the ambitious imagining of a nation, and of the life of a boy whose identity does not - can not - unite with this vision

Longlisted for 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction. Synopsis: The Forgotten Waltz is a memory of desire: a recollection of the bewildering speed of attraction, the irreparable slip into longing. In Terenure, a pleasant suburb of Dublin, in the winter of 2009, it has snowed. Gina Moynihan, girl about town, recalls the trail of lust and happenstance that brought her to fall for Ôthe love of her lifeÕ, Se‡n Vallely. As the city outside comes to a halt, Gina remembers the days of their affair in one hotel room or another: long afternoons made blank by bliss and denial. Now, as the silent streets and the stillness and vertigo of the falling snow make the day luminous and full of possibility, Gina walks through the weather to meet a girl she calls his Ôbeautiful mistakeÕ: Se‡nÕs fragile, twelve-year-old daughter, Evie. Anne Enright was born in Dublin, where she now lives and works. She has published two volumes of stories, collected as YesterdayÕs Weather, one book of non-fiction, Making Babies, and four novels, most recently The Gathering, which was the Irish Novel of the Year and won the Irish Fiction Award and the 2007 Man Booker Prize.

        The Kindly Ones

Chatto & Windus, 2009. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. Fine unread SIGNED copy of this increasingly rare book. Signed by author on tipped-in page preceding title page/front endpaper. Fine/Mint condition. INCLUDED is the scarce UK first promo advance sampler. Synopsis: This Faustian story with a terrifying twist is the fictional memoir of Dr. Max Aue, a former SS intelligence officer, who has reinvented himself as a family man and owner of a lace factory in post-war France. Max is an intellectual steeped in philosophy, literature, and classical music. He is also a cold-blooded assassin and the consummate bureaucrat, who speaks out now not in self-justification but to set the record straight. He looks back at his life with cool-eyed precision: from a disrupted childhood and a turning point in his student days, to his role as observer and then participant in Nazi atrocities on the Eastern Front, from Poland to the Caucasus; he is present at the siege of Stalingrad, at the death camps, and finally caught up in the rout of the Nazis and the nightmarish fall of Berlin.Although Max is a totally imagined character, his world is peopled by real historical figures such as Eichmann, Himmler, Goring, Speer, Heydrich, Hoss, and Hitler himself. Massive in scope, terrifying in subject matter, and shocking in its protagonist, Littell's masterpiece is intense, hallucinatory, and terrifyingly compelling. Described by Le Figaro as 'a monument of contemporary literature', this transgressive work has been compared to classics of world literature, including War and Peace. A huge novel about the seductive enormity of evil, the ineffable horror of war, man's inhumanity and the malevolence of the Furies, this is a book that every thinking person should read and to which no one can be indifferent.

        Fragments of Prayers #3

Pasadena, MD. 2009. Artist's book, unique copy, the third of three in a series each in a different format, of Sanskrit mantra, Om mani padme hum, on heavy-weight St. Armand paper, with artist's statement printed out on separate sheet and enclosed with book. Page size: 6.875 x 8 x 6.875 x 6 inches; 60 leaves. Bound by the artist: Photo Carousel style binding using black paper and housed in custom-made box of tan and black paper over boards, as the pages do not lie flat nicely like those in FRAGMENTS OF PRAYERS 2, and the artist wanted them to look like a slide carousel so they are housed in a round box inspired by a CD container. bound with black grosgrain ribbon with the title painted and lettered on another piece of St. Armand heavy weight paper, FRAGMENTS OF PRAYERS #3, in black ink, set into tan label attached with black grosgrain label and signed Elizabeth McKee and dated 2009. The text, Om Mani Padme Hum, has been painted and hand-lettered in gesso, sumi, walnut ink and white gouache with sixty different tools, thirty on each side on a sheet of white heavy-weight St. Armand paper. The artist then tore the sheet into sixty pieces for binding. The chant, Om Mani Padme Hum, is particularly associated with the four-armed Shadakshari form of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Mani means "jewel" and padma means "the lotus flower" the Buddhist Sacred Flower. The chant is commonly carved into rocks - called "mani stones" - or written on paper and inserted into prayer wheels. When the wheel is spun, it is said to have the same effect as reciting the mantra as many times as it is duplicated within the wheel. Talented book artist and calligrapher, Elizabeth Mckee's own aesthetic has enabled her to create a completely contemporary version of this ancient form for presenting a text.

        Sunnyside

Sceptre, 2009. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. Fine unread copy of UK edition - SIGNED by the author to title page. From the author of the acclaimed CARTER BEATS THE DEVIL comes a grand entertainment with the brilliantly realized figure of Charlie Chaplin at its centre: a novel at once cinematic and intimate, thrilling and darkly comic, which dramatizes the moment when American capitalism, a world at war, and the emerging mecca of Hollywood intersect to spawn an enduring culture of celebrity. SUNNYSIDE follows three overlapping fortunes: Leland Wheeler, son of the last (and worst) Wild West star, as he heads to the battlefields of France; snobbish Hugo Black, drafted to fight in Russia under the British general, Edmund Ironside; and Chaplin himself, contending with studio moguls, accusations of cowardice, his unchecked heart and, most menacing of all, his mother, as he pursues the goal of making a movie 'as good as he was'. With a cast of enthralling characters both historical and fictional, SUNNYSIDE is a heart-rending, spellbinding novel about dreams, ambition and the dawn of the modern age.

        Her Fearful Symmetry

Jonathan Cape, 2009. Hardcover. Fine/n/a. Signed by Author. Limited Collector's edition published by Jonathan Cape. Book isÊBrand NewÊin slipcase and still sealed in the publisher's shrinkwrap. SIGNED AND NUMBERED LimitedÊEdition. "Julia and Valentina Poole are normal American teenagers - normal, at least, for identical 'mirror' twins who have no interest in college or jobs or possibly anything outside their cozy suburban home. But everything changes when they receive notice that an aunt whom they didn't know existed has died and left them her flat in an apartment block overlooking Highgate Cemetery in London. They feel that at last their own lives can begin .but have no idea that they've been summoned into a tangle of fraying lives, from the obsessive-compulsive crossword setter who lives above them to their aunt's mysterious and elusive lover who lives below them, and even to their aunt herself, who never got over her estrangement from the twins' mother - and who can't even seem to quite leave her flat. With Highgate Cemetery itself a character and echoes of Henry James and Charles Dickens, "Her Fearful Symmetry" is a delicious and deadly twenty-first-century ghost story about Niffenegger's familiar themes of love, loss and identity. It is certain to cement her standing as one of the most singular and remarkable novelists of our time"Ê

        The Angel's Game

Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2009. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. UK First in perfect condition. First Edition & First Printing. Not price clipped, no inscriptions. SIGNED and DATED JUNE 3rd 2009 to title page. Complete with rare promo bookmark. SYNOPSIS: In an abandoned mansion at the heart of Barcelona, a young man - David Martin - makes his living by writing sensationalist novels under a pseudonym. The survivor of a troubled childhood, he has taken refuge in the world of books, and spends his nights spinning baroque tales about the city's underworld. But perhaps his dark imaginings are not as strange as they seem, for in a locked room deep within the house are letters hinting at the mysterious death of the previous owner. Like a slow poison, the history of the place seeps into his bones as he struggles with an impossible love. Then David receives a letter from a reclusive French editor, Andreas Corelli, who makes him the offer of a lifetime. He is to write a book with the power to change hearts and minds. In return, he will receive a fortune, perhaps more. But as David begins the work, he realises that there is a connection between this haunting book and the shadows that surround his home. Set in the turbulent 1920s, The Angel's Game takes us back to the gothic universe of the Cemetery of the Forgotten Books, the Sempere and Son bookshop, and the winding streets of Barcelona's old quarter, in a masterful tale about the magic of books and the darkest corners of the human soul.

        The Quickening Maze

Jonathan Cape, 2009. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. A Fine Unread copy in likewise Fine/Mint dustwrapper. The book has been signed and dated by the author to title page. Book is in Mint condition. Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Small print run. Synopsis: Based on real events in Epping Forest on the edge of London around 1840, "The Quickening Maze" centres on the first incarceration of the great nature poet John Clare. After years struggling with alcohol, critical neglect and depression, Clare finds himself in High Beach Private Asylum - an institution run on reformist principles which would later become known as occupational therapy. At the same time another poet, the young Alfred Tennyson, moves nearby and becomes entangled in the life and catastrophic schemes of the asylum's owner, the peculiar, charismatic Dr Matthew Allen. For John Clare, a man who had grown up steeped in the freedoms and exhilarations of nature, who thought 'the edge of the world was a day's walk away', a locked door is a kind of death. This intensely lyrical novel describes his vertiginous fall, through hallucinatory episodes of insanity and dissolving identity, towards his final madness. Historically accurate, but brilliantly imagined, the closed world of High Beach and its various inmates - the doctor, his lonely daughter in love with Tennyson, the brutish staff and John Clare himself - are brought vividly to life. Outside the walls is Nature, and Clare's paradise: the birds and animals, the gypsies living in the forest; his dream of home, of redemption, of escape. Rapturous yet precise, exquisitely written, rich in character and detail, this is a remarkable and deeply affecting book: a visionary novel which contains a world.

        The Wilderness SIGNED and DATED

Jonathan Cape, 2009. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. A Fine Unread copy in likewise Fine/Mint dustwrapper. The book has been SIGNED and DATED by the author to title page and is in Mint condition. Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and Shortlisted for the 2009 Orange prize. Synopsis: It's Jake's birthday. He is sitting in a small plane, being flown over the landscape that has been the backdrop to his life - his childhood, his marriage, his work, his passions. Now he is in his early sixties, and he isn't quite the man he used to be. He has lost his wife, his son is in prison, and he is about to lose his past. Jake has Alzheimer's. As the disease takes hold of him, Jake struggles to hold on to his personal story, to his memories and identity, but they become increasingly elusive and unreliable. What happened to his daughter? Is she alive, or long dead? And why exactly is his son in prison? What went so wrong in his life? There was a cherry tree once, and a yellow dress, but what exactly do they mean? As Jake, assisted by 'poor Eleanor', a childhood friend with whom for some unfathomable reason he seems to be sleeping, fights the inevitable dying of the light, the key events of his life keep changing as he tries to grasp them, and what until recently seemed solid fact is melting into surreal dreams or nightmarish imaginings. Is there anything he'll be able to salvage from the wreckage? Beauty, perhaps, the memory of love, or nothing at all? From the first sentence to the last, "The Wilderness" holds us in its grip. This is writing of extraordinary power and beauty.
