Mike and the Modelmakers. Edition Ex Libris No. 14.

Salon Verlag., Cologne. 2008 - Rachel Whiteread was invited, for this edition, to select a book of special importance to her, for which she then designs a new dust-jacket, and presents it under her own name as a 'Reprint'. In this case the artist has chosen 'Mike and the Modelmakers' by M. Sasek, originally published in 1970. The London studio of Whiteread lay opposite the company Lesney, who during the 1970's was the toy manufacturer of the Matchbox car. Whiteread's dust-jacket is a photographic illustration of the Lesney factory. The book is still in its original shrinkwrap. Issued loose with the book is Whiteread's ex-libris bookplate (flat-packed colour printed cardboard box for the matchbox cement-mixer), designed to be detached and pasted into the book. This is one of 40 deluxe copies, with a solid lead cast of the cement-mixer, stamp-numbered and initialled on its base. This model is wrapped in a small protective woolen blanket which has a stitched label carrying the same numbering. The aforementioned flattened bookplate is also signed in pen by Whiteread and numbered from the edition of 40. Together presented in the publisherÕs orange solander drop-back box. pp. (42). Accordion book of six wood panels hinged with book cloth. Multi-plate color woodcuts mounted on wood panel. Stephanie Stigliano: "I played with the names, shapes and colors of healthy food. After drawing the vegetables, which my neighbors showed me how to cook, they shared a meal and helped me with the Chinese translation and calligraphy."The images began as posters for an installation for Windows Art of Malden, which is an annual event. Local storeowners offer artists their windows as exhibition space. I was paired with All Seasons Table, a Pan-Asian restaurant. Choosing a variety of interestingly shaped vegetables and fruits from the nearby Asian market, I designed, carved and printed a number of posters with ingredients from the restaurant

Access & Closure [stories from in and out of an occupied Palestine]afterword by Anton Shammas

Portland, Oregon:: Oregon College of Art and Craft,, 2008.. Edition of 50. 4.75 x 6.75 x 1.25; 64 pages. Letterpress printed from polymer plates set in Gill Sans Light on Stonehenge paper. Leporello bound. In an edition of 50 (45 bound, 5 boxed print portfolios) plus three artist proofs. Toby Millman: "The stories in the book began during 2006, when I spent ten weeks in Palestine. During much of that time, I was living in a Melkite convent in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem, studying Arabic at Al Quds University and traveling to other areas of the West Bank. I recently returned from a longer visit, where I spent about two months in Tel Aviv and another five months in Ramallah. During this second visit, I continued my study of Arabic at Birzeit University while volunteering at a youth club at Jalazone refugee camp, writing for various cultural institutions and grassroots campaigns, and attempting to teach high school, all while collecting information to continue this body of work. "I chose to title the book after the heading on this map as a way to summarize my experience as an American in Palestine. At its most obvious level, this work chronicles the access that I had as a foreign-passport holder traveling throughout the area. I was able to travel fairly easily compared to most Palestinians, and I was able to visit areas that are closed to many of those who call this land their home. But this work is more so about the access that the people I met allowed me into their lives. Without being welcomed into homes and guided throughout the streets, I never would have been able to create this work. On the other hand, I did not have full access to the land or its people. Aside from the Israeli-imposed closures that the map refers to, I was well aware - especially during my longer visit - that I am an outsider and certain aspects of Palestinian society are still closed to me. My book speaks to this closure in some ways. Whether it's in my naivety as I try to retrieve a stolen cell phone or my inability to communicate clearly in Arabic, there were many instances where I wished that I could be a Palestinian, an insider; to fully experience both the beauty and horrors of this place. "All images were traced from original photographs or maps and the written vignettes are one hundred percent true (with a few names changed to protect the semi-innocent). The cover images have been drawn from maps produced by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for the occupied Palestinian territories." Anton Shammas, (part of his elegant) Afterword: "These snippets and vignettes of the quotidian, these minor and low-keyed interventions on the margins of the Palestinian page, in images and in words … interpret and translate the complex Palestinian reality.

At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives.nnThe work of Minihan in Athy makes up a large part of his canon. Minihan began taking photos in Athy when he was 16. The photos are an attempt to document the lives of the ordinary people of the town in their day-to-day business and also in times of joy and sadness, notably during the wake of a woman called Katy Tyrrell.nnIn between documenting Athy on visits home, Minihan continued his career on Fleet Street, which included the iconic snap of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery at which she worked, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales's love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first.nnOver the years Minihan developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. Minihans photos of Beckett are some of his best known, one in particular is described as one of the greatest photos of the twentieth century. William S. Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer".nnMinihan is perhaps best known for his photographs of Beckett. Minihan first expressed a desire to photograph Beckett in 1969, following Beckett's winning of the Nobel Prize for literature, having noticed that all the available photos of Beckett were of a poor quality;nn 'We were running a story but discovered there were only two very vague images of Beckett taken many years before. It was like he didn't exist - that was the moment I decided I wanted to meet this man and take his photograph.'nnMinihan first encountered Beckett in London in 1980, while Beckett was working on a production of one of his own plays, Endgame. Minihan met Beckett in the Hyde Park hotel and showed him some of his photos of Athy to break the ice. The two met on a number of occasions over the next few years, but it was not until 1985 that they met in Paris. They arranged to meet in the restaurant of the Hotel PLM, a regular haunt of Beckett. At ten to five, with the light fading, Minihan took the photo that would go on to be called by some as the photograph of the twentieth century. John Calder credited Minihan with capturing,nn 'the introspective, infinitely sad gaze of a man looking into the abyss of the world's woes'.nnAmong his numerous photographic publications are Photographs: Samuel Beckett (1995); Shadows from the Pale, Portrait of an Irish Town (1996); and An Unweaving of Rainbows, Images of Irish Writers (1996).nnHe is currently a freelance photographer specialising in 'the arts'. His book of photographs of Samuel Beckett was published in 1995. His photographs of Athy have been exhibited throughout the world. He was given the freedom of Athy in 1990. Minihan currently lives and works in West CorknnMinihan's many exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world include the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 1984; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris 1986; the National Portrait Gallery, London 1987/8 and the October Gallery, London 1990 as well as the Guinness Hop Store, Dublin 1991.         Access & Closure

Portland, Oregon: Oregon College of Art and Craft, 2008. The cover images have been drawn from maps produced by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for the occupied Palestinian territories."Anton Shammas, (part of his elegant) Afterword: "These snippets and vignettes of the quotidian, these minor and low-keyed interventions on the margins of the Palestinian page, in images and in words … interpret and translate the complex Palestinian reality.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

London: The Children's High Level Group,, 2008. Translated from the original runes by Hermione Granger. With commentary by Professor Albus Dumbledore. Octavo. Original brown morocco-patterned boards, cornerpieces and centrepiece to front board of silver metal with blue faux gems, metal clasp, green silk bookmark. Housed in the embroidered velvet bag within the publisher's calf solander case with titles to the spine gilt and design to the lid blocked in blind. Illustrations throughout by the author. A fine copy of this elaborate and fantastical limited edition. First edition, limited issue. Signed by the author on the half-title, with the authentication hologram. This specially bound edition includes a portfolio of ten additional prints by Rowling that were not issued with either the trade edition or the manuscript editions. Rowling initially began the full-length version of The Tales of Beedle the Bard shortly after finishing the seventh Harry Potter novel, in which the storybook played a major role. She wrote and illustrated six manuscript copies that were finely bound and given to people who had been important in the publication of the Harry Potter books. A seventh manuscript copy was auctioned to raise funds for her charity, The Children's High Level Group, and broke the record for the most expensive modern literary manuscript. Disappointment from fans that the full text would not be made available prompted her to release a trade edition and the present limited edition, bound in a similar style to the copy offered for auction. Uncommon signed: there was only one signing event for this book, at the National Library of Scotland. Two hundred children, selected through a lottery, attended the signing.
