Disgraced journalist Mikael Blomqvist is hired to investigate, but when he links Harriet's disappearance to a string of gruesome murders from forty years ago, he needs a competent assistant - and he gets one: computer hacker Lisbeth Salander - a tattoed, truculent, angry girl who rides a motorbike like a Hell's Angel and handles makeshift weapons with the skill born of remorseless rage. This unlikely pair form a fragile bond as they delve into the sinister past of this island-bound, tightly-knit family. But the Vangers are a secretive lot, and Mikael and Lisbeth are about to find out just how far they're prepared to go to protect themselves - and each other. This is another paragraph About the Author: Stieg Larsson was the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Expo. He was a leading expert on anti-democratic, right-wing extremist organisations.         Drawn Blank Series [Signed]

Washington Green Fine art in association with Black Buffalo Artworks, Printed by GTZ Fine Art Editions, New York. 2008, 2008. LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION by Bob Dylan. This is the Limited Edition Graphics Standard Box set, comprising ten fine gallery quality colour prints of Gilclee on Museum Etching 350gsm paper, each print SIGNED by the artist. One of 295 numbered sets (a few out of series proofs also exist but were not commercially released.) Image size 21.5 x 16 inches, paper size 27.5 x 22 inches. Each of the graphics is supplied in individual bespoke, hand-made presentation wallets, and are encased in a presentation box. With accompanying 'Drawn Blank' series paperwork. Absolutely fine/ as new. Dylan's autograph is notoriously difficult to obtain, and many secretarial examples and fakes abound- obviously these signatures are guaranteed as part of an official numbered release. Whilst travelling on tour between 1989 and 1992, Bob Dylan created a collection of drawings that were published in a book entitled 'Drawn Blank' in 1994. These expressive works capture Dylan's chance encounters and observations. The creation of these portraits, interiors, landscapes, still lifes, nudes and street scenes were done to "relax and refocus a restless mind". Following a major exhibition in London in 2008, the prints were offered for sale as both individual graphics, a portfolio of three, a medium box of six, a standard box of ten, or a deluxe set of twenty-nine images. All formats were quickly sold out- such was the popularity of this collection that is was re-printed in 2009 as individual prints or collected as a set of eight, and it was again reprinted individually in 2010. This is a rare opportunity to obtain one of the original and more substantial collections from 2008.

Table with Candelabra. An original watercolor by Bishop, gouache and India ink on paper, 5 ?? wide x 7 5/16? high

Benton 59. Bishop inscribed the painting in the upper left-hand corner with the greeting ?Happy Birthday?, but whose birthday she intended to celebrate is unstated, perhaps her own. ?Bishop?s eye was drawn to anything on a table ? an oil lamp, a candelabra, tea laid for one, a scraggly bouquet of daisies in a paint bucket. This attention to proximate objects is hardly surprising in a poet who values useless concentration, and the emphasis on domestic interiors reflects her long meditation on ?home.?? ? Bonnie Costello, Planets On Tables: Poetry, Still Life, and the Turning World (Ithaca, N.Y.: Cornell University Press, 2008), p. 84. On the subject of home, Bishop said, ?I?ve never felt particularly homeless, but, then, I?ve never felt particularly at home. I guess that?s a pretty good description of a poet?s sense of home.? ? Conversations with Elizabeth Bishop. Edited by George Monteiro. (Jackson, MS.: University of Mississippi Press, 1996), p. 102

Page size: 8-3/4 x 11-3/4 inches; 20pp. Bound: loose as issued, in cinnamon- colored wrappers, black label title printed in gold on spine housed in brick-colored cloth custom-made clamshell box, black leather label with title and author in gold gilt on spine, made by Claudia Cohen. Ms. Plimpton's poem reads, "one eye / drawing circles / with fingers tightened / round like an hour / left / on the paper / for now". The text is set in Dante and printed with the help of Brad Ewing at The Grenfell Press in New York. Each page is an original aquatint on an ochre colored ground with the exception of the middle double page spread with is on a pale moss green ground with deeper green forms. Extremely organic, each page of images surround the word / words, almost devouring them (think Pac-man). The textures achieved in the aquatints belie their two-dimensionality. The plates were made and proofed by the artist at the Manhattan Graphics Center and editioned by Peter Pettengill. Ms. Plimpton's personal journey with forms and words is captivating. See an Image.

        Flora and Fauna

Boston. 2008. Deck of cards, one of 20 copies all on magnani pescia paper, each signed and numbered by the artist in the plate.. Size: 3-3/8 x 2-3/8 inches; 54 cards (deck of 52 plus 2 "jokers"); housed in hand-made mahogany box with colophon that is hand-colored dry-point etching by the artist and ornamented with water colored green-leaf vine and 23 caret gold gilt crown, signed and dated and numbered in the plate. The "Jokers" are each a rabbit - and the artist tells us that anyone who has had a vegetable garden will understand this choice. Ms. Davidson tells us her "jumping off point" was the rich history of Transformation Cards, wherein "each of the pip cards has been changed (transformed) by the addition of drawings that include each of the pips as part of the picture. The result can be artistic or humorous." (International Playing Card Society) In this case, Ms. Davidson has achieved both. The pip images are hand-colored dry point etchings with lino cuts in tan and white on the reverse. All images are of the natural world: flowers, insects, birds, weeds, trees and all incorporate the correct number of pips in the correct suit for each card. The Queen of Clubs, for example, is a picture of a queen bee followed by worker bee with a 23c. gold gilt crown at the top of the card. The King of Clubs is a Monarch Butterfly, again with a 23c. gold gilt crown at the top of the card. The Ace of Hearts is a coconut palm with the single heart shown as the coconut nestled in the palm's green branches. The Eight of Spades is a Dutchman's Britches stalk with the eight spades as the flowers. The Six of Diamonds shows a hummingbird taking nectar from a flower made of diamonds (5) with the 6th diamond forming the hummingbird's throat. The "Queen of Hearts" is an apple tree with a red "heart" apple hanging from one of the green branches just above an apple barrel full of red heart apples. All suits of Kings and Queens have 23c. gold gilt crowns at the top; all suits of Jacks have silver colored crowns at the top (aluminum). The delights of the natural world made visible - flowers, trees, birds and insects in colorful and beautifully designed images! See an Image.

Art & Print: The Curwen Story with original signed lithograph printed at the Curwen Studio, limited to 50 copies.

Tate Publishing Oct 2008. A lavish production featuring over a hundred and fifty colour and black and white illustrations supporting a 30,000 word text written by Alan Powers, a leading author of twentieth century design. The coloured lithograph is signed and numbered by Paula Rego and is an impressive production measuring 85cm x 62cm (approx. 2ft 10 ins x 2 ft ins). There is a video of Paula in the Curwen Studio overseeing the production. Follow the link. http://www.tate.org.uk/tateshots/episode.jsp?item=16076The Curwen Press, set up by the Reverend John Curwen in 1863, was initially concerned with printing sheet music, but made its name in the early 20th century as a printer of superb quality limited edition books. Using the newly developed technique of lithography, in the 1920s, the Press began encouraging young artists to illustrate their books and design end-papers and was soon commissioning such leading figures in the history of twentieth century British art as Paul Nash, Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious to contribute artwork. Hugely influential in terms of book-design, many of these early editions are now highly sought after collector's items. Publicity brochures and press advertising decorated by these artists aimed, in the words of Harold Curwen, to 'put the spirit of joy into your printed work'. In 2008, The Curwen Studio celebrates its half-centenary. Established in the late 1950's in response to a rising demand for original artists prints, the Curwen Studio was set up to work with artists and photographers in developing exciting new techniques in printmaking. Soon many of the most significant artists of the time were working at the studio. They included Barbara Hepworth, Patrick Heron, Henry Moore, John Piper and Graham Sutherland, who all produced prints under the management of Stanley Jones, whose skill and passion has continued to result in the production of truly unique prints and photographs at the Studio. His memories and experiences of working with a wide range of artists (from Paula Rego to the young Tracey Emin), demonstrate the potential of lithography as an expressive and experimental medium, and the skills required to maintain this freedom in a commercial environment. 'The Curwen Story' is one of an extended collaboration between artists and craftsmen-printers, unique in the art of the twentieth century in Britain. Charting the history of both publishing and print-making at Curwen, leading author on twentieth century British design Alan Powers looks at the role the Press played in shaping ideas of book-design from the 1920s onwards, and how artists working alongside Stanley Jones at the Studio have created prints that have helped to change public perceptions about Modernism.

No. 10 / Supreme Virtue for double SATB choir. Autograph musical manuscript of the complete full score

29 pp. + 2 pp. of additional manuscript apparently not included in the final version. Oblong folio (278 x 208 mm.). Unbound. Notated in pencil on 16-stave music manuscript paper. Folded. Signed and dated New York, Jan- April [19]97. . Supreme Virtue was commissioned by the Dale Warland Singers with the support of the Jerome Foundation and the Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University. The text consists of an English translation of verses from the "Tao te Ching." It was first recorded by the Seattle-based chamber choir Esoterics on the Terpsichore label in the winter of 2008. "For a few years I was the tenor section leader of a choir in Washington, and in singing with and composing for them I'd become more and more interested in the quasi-instrumental vocal gesture. Stephen Mitchell's pellucid translation of this verse of the Tao te ching - a series of moral challenges all beginning with the words "Can you?" - spurred me to explore this idea at length. The singers, divided into two SATB choirs, intone the first question in a dusky C-minor against a sighing backdrop of wind sounds: then, as the first choir utters the text's first challenge, the second choir refracts their words into marimba-like repeated notes, as if the long lines of the first choir were subjected to a kind of aural strobe. As the questions become tougher, so do the sounds: tenors and altos stab into the texture with horn-like interruptions, and the phrase "Can you?" disrupts the unwavering four-four pulse with insistent threes and twos. At a peak of intensity, a looping soprano-alto line spirits us away from pulse and chord, leading first to a melodic meditation based on the vowels of "Can you?" and then to a cadenza, in which chords appear and vanish into a shimmering, ever-present curtain of sound. A vision of equanimity is intoned in the open fifths of (both Western and Eastern) chant: then, as if elated by its discovery ("this is the supreme virtue") the chorus reworks its "Can you?" motive: a nudging half-step expands to a whole step, the harmony brightens to B-flat, and, in rhythms now more jubilant than insistent, the score spins to closure." www.markadamo.com

Wind in the Willows: Centenary Edition

London: Folio Society, 2008.. Illustrated by Charles van Sandwyk. Hardcover. Fine/Fine (slipcase). Folio - over 12" - 15" tall Limited Edition No. 539 of 1000 copies. A fine copy of this exquisite Folio Society edition which was justifiably their fasting-selling, limited edition of all time. Measuring 13" x 9¾", the folio is handbound in quarter vellum, blocked on the spine in 22-carat gold, with vellum tips and paper sides blocked in three shades of metallic foil. Top edges gilt. The calligraphy has been printed letterpress by the Logan Press. A wealth of new llustrations have been created by Canadian artist, Charles van Sandwyk. The book contains 16 colour plates, all tipped in by hand, with gold edges and exquisite gold borders; forty pen-and-ink drawings, including chapter heads and tails, as well as charming hand-drawn captions. Endpapers showing an architectural plan of Toad Hall have been printed by letterpress. Each copy contains a limitation spread with a tipped-in copperplate etching, hand-printed under the artist's supervision and signed by him with the limitation number. The volume is presented in a cloth-bound solander box, both of which are in fine condition. The book has been looked at (as it deserves to be!) so the binding is not tight as when new. There is a faint 1 cm surface scratch to the lower board; and a slight wave to the gilt page edges at the front and the back of the book both of which are really only noticeable when looking for defects. Other than those minor ones, there aren't any, and this is a superb copy of this hard-to-find limited edition. Heavy/oversize book. Additional postage charge may be required.

PRIVATE TYPECASTERS, PRESERVING THE CRAFT OF HOT-METAL TYPE INTO THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

Bird & Bull Press Newtown, PA: Bird & Bull Press. 2008. small 4to., quarter morocco with Japanese cloth sides, leather spine label. 194 pages.. First edition, limited to 150 numbered copies. The private press has been with us in one form or another for 200 years or more. The equipment for a small private press was inexpensive, required little space and almost anyone could learn to do basic printing in a short time. Private typecasting is entirely different. A single machine weighs almost a ton and a lot of practice and experience is required in order to decently produce the most basic work. This once-costly equipment came into the hands of printing enthusiasts when hot-metal typesetting was forced into decline by the computer. The members of this hot-metal fraternity comprise a network of small shops using the machines and matrices which once supported the hot-metal letterpress era. They are, in effect, a group of small, working museums. The work of fifteen of these typecasters has been gathered into the pages of this book. Here you will see unknown, newly-created types, ancient types cast from 200-year-old matrices, proprietary types and a beautiful Civilité face designed by Hermann Zapf, which was never released to the commercial market. There are five fold-out pages, two of which open together to make a 32-inch spread. One of the fold-outs is a recreated page from the 36-line Gutenberg Bible with rubrication. It took six months to turn the printed images on the original page into a complete font of hand-fitted metal types. Printed on dampened handmade paper, this leaf required a week's work, and handling it is as close as most of us will get to experiencing the genuine page. A biographical sketch of each contributor precedes his alphabets and the specimen pages which show the alphabets in use. Produced over a 14-month period, the labor and expense lavished on this work exceeds any previous book from Bird & Bull Press. The Private Typecasters, a 194-page small folio printed on Zerkall mould-made paper, is beautifully bound in quarter morocco with Japanese cloth sides and leather spine label. The same cloth and spine label are used on the clamshell case which houses the book. .
