BOOK OF HOURS OF BONAPARTE GHISLIERI.|THE

Franco Cosimo Panini Modena: Franco Cosimo Panini. 2008. 8vo, morocco binding adorned with silver and enamel work and semi-preciuos stones, clamshell case. 274 pages.. Facsimile with accompanying hardcover commentary. One of 980 copies. This extremely refined masterwork of the Italian Renaissance (1503) was commissioned by Bonaparte Ghislieri, who belonged to a leading family of Bologna. Also Bolognese was the calligrapher, Pietro Antonio Sallando (a grammarian at the citys university and a renowned calligraphy master). A treasury of masterpieces: Ghislieris intention was to produce a small anthology of the finest illuminations in central and northern Italy. To this end he called upon a number of the leading artists of this period, each of whom was to produce a full-page illumination. Thus, we find works by Amico Aspertini (Adoration of the Shepherds), Perugino (San Sebastiano), Lorenzo Costa (David with lyre), Francesco Francia (San Gerolamo), and, in all likelihood, Matteo da Milano (Annunciation). Marvellous embellishments: Notable, too, are the embellishments framing the illustrations, produced with an abundance of floral motifs and references to the classic tradition. Indeed, a number of pages include fragile, fantastic, grotesque figures inspired by the decor of the Grotte (caves) of the Esquiline Hill in Rome (the site of the buried remains of Neros Domus Aurea, or Golden House, which, when uncovered in 1480, immediately attracted the attention of the artists of that period). The elaborate binding: The morocco binding, with its finely executed floral motifs on polychrome silk satin, is quite remarkable. The covers are adorned with two bezels or settings for semi-precious stones and two centrally positioned roundels for the figures of the Annunciation. Patronage: The works original owner (as indicated by the coat of arms) was Bonaparte Ghislieri, who was elected a senator in Bologna following the assassination of his father, Virgilio, in 1523. When the codex was produced, Bonaparte Ghislieri was still rather young and it may be that this Libro dOre had been commissioned by Bonapartes father for his sons use. The codex passed from the house of Ghislieri into the hands of the Albani family of Urbino, where, according to record, it was to be found in the eighteenth century. In the nineteenth century, the work reached Britain, where it was purchased by Henry Yates Thompson in 1897. It has been at the British Library since 1941. The Commentary: The work is accompanied by a book with commentary, edited by Massimo Medica, with writings by Giancarlo Benevolo, Peter Kidd and Massimo Medica. Facsimile is present with the accompanying commentary and a clamshell case. .

Archeologia classica.

        28 Characters, 4 Men, 10 Women, 5 Boys and 8 Girls

(N.p., 2008). Small quarto. 32ff. One of five copies, signed by the artists. An artistic collaboration between noted bookbinder, typographer, and illustrator Eri Funazaki and Danny Flynn, a fellow typographer who also wrote the text. Each letter was printed using different wood and metal types, many of which were altered by the artists or specially created for the project. In this unusual alphabet book, tiny line drawings of people are scattered throughout the text, interacting with the large, colorful letters. Accenting designs are occasionally hand-tooled in gold and blind. Playing on the dual meaning of “characters,” Flynn and Funazaki created personalities for all twenty-six letters of the alphabet and two punctuation marks: a female ampersand and a full stop “of undetermined gender.” The characters are described in short, witty, often rhyming “living eulogies” that reveal their quirks and neuroses. In a playful, unconventional binding of navy blue, tan, and orange Harmatan goatskin that resembles a giant door hinge, with covers that rotate around a tube. The covers have inlays shaped to resemble the tops of screws. One hole is left open in the center of the front cover, revealing the gold tooling on the first page. Together with a bronze figure of Funazaki’s “little man” character, which has appeared in several of her artists’ books, done in the style of the figures in the text. The “little man” is seated and holds the missing screw from the binding across his lap. The figure is intended to be set on the edge of the book as an integral part of the binding design. Extremely fine.

        Pongmalai Garland

CoTangent Press San Francisco, CA: CoTangent Press. 2008. One of 5 copies, 4 of which are for sale, of this gum printed diptych, signed by the artist, William T. Vollmann, on the front cover. Page size: 18-3/8 x 18-1/8 inches; 4pp; including covers. Bound by the artist: paper over boards that has been painted with heavy impasto small white paper label on front right corner reading, "Pongmalai / Garland/ A Bichromate / Diptych / Bangkok 9/11/01 / William T. Vollmann / 1/5 / 2008" and another white paper label on lower right corner reading, "CoTangent" with the press's device in the artist's hand, interior heavily painted forming borders within which the two gum prints are mounted, housed in custom-made black cloth clamsh box with black morocco label on spine, stamped in gold gilt with artist's name and title. The actual images are of female genetalia covered by flower garlands so the subject matter is not immediately discernable. And, while the label dates and places this work as 2001 in Thailand, the printing was accomplished in 2008 in Sacramento. The Gum Bichromate Process ( a contact printing process) is extremely delicate, diffucult, and dangerous - due to the chemicals used in the process. Each color of a seven-color gum print is printed with a different negative and developed with a different pigment, and all must be in register on "sized" paper. Further each layer must be printed two to six times. The final print has a depth of color and shade not achieved with other print-making techniques. William Vollmann has employed the successfully employed this technique resulting in images that are at once mysterious, fragile and beautiful. His decorative painting of the portfolio housing the prints is a perfect complement. See an Image.

        Valkyria.

Olja på duk. Signerad »J. G. Sandberg». 46?×?33,5 cm. | (2) Mauritz Beijerstein, Johan Gustaf Sandberg 1782-1854 (1928), s. 213. Skissen: övriga arbeten, kat. nr 11 (58?×?85 cm), avbildad pl. 2. Målningen: övriga arbeten, kat. nr 13 (140?×?201 cm)

New York City, NY: Aperture Foundation, 2008. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Aperture Foundation, 2008. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 100 pages. Facsimile Edition of the collaborative classic. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the previous Aperture editions of the book, which are inferior to the Japanese original. A brilliant production by Eikoh Hosoe and NADiff: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial cloth boards with titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Eikoh Hosoe. Text by Yukio Mishima, the greatest Japanese novelist of the 20th century, who conceived, directed, and appeared in every image. Pictorial hard board slipcase. Cardboard box with label pasted in front. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper in Tokyo, Japan to absolutely the highest standards. In glassine DJ, as issued. "Aperture is delighted to reissue this faithfully reproduced facsimile of the 1963 classic, making available once again one of the most infamous and intriguing photobooks of the twentieth century" (Aperture). Mishima viewed the project as a photographic self-portrait, presenting himself in febrile Baroque- and Surrealist-inspired iconography that will not be surpassed. There is no other writer, Japanese or Western, who can convincingly pull off Mishima&#39;s unabashed performance as iconoclast, nude model, and mythologist. At least two works of art were influenced by "Ba Ra Kei": Rainer Werner Fassbinder&#39;s film version of "Querelle" (1982) and Paul Schrader&#39;s "Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters" (1985). A "must-have" title for Yukio Mishima and Eikoh Hosoe collectors. <b><i> This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such on the Limitation Page, and is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed (in Japanese characters) by Eikoh Hosoe. This title is an instant collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Copies of the 1963 original command between $5000 and $10000, depending on condition, and are extremely rare. This is an accessible and lovely alternative. A very scarce signed copy thus. </b></i> 43 tritone plates. "Ba Ra Kei" and "Kamaitachi" were selected as two of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". Two of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER YUKIO MISHIMA AND EIKOH HOSOE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1597110906.

        Message from Diamond Ring

Niles, MN. 2008. Unique artist&#39;s book, in form of box with brass plates on four sides, each plate etched with line of text. The top of the box, in which there are two shallow troughs for the texts, is covered with shellacked hand-drawn map by the artist, with gold fabric covering the book insets and terracotta fabric covering the map insets; box studded with brass escutcheon pins and 8 decorative brass pieces. Texts included as part of two paper fans rising out of the box as if open books with covers flat on top of box, with title, date and author / artist&#39;s signature on text paper laid in. The box itself is a distressed wooden "carrier" with ball feet. The "book" sits on a custom-made black wood base and has an acrylic box dome to cover it. The text of the short poems is on shellacked vellum sheets (wheat colored) inserted amongst various colored hand-made Asian papers (orange, lavender, blue green, gold, various textures and patterns). The printed vellum texts are 1/4 inch higher than the colored papers giving the text prominence as well as lending an airiness and visual height to the book. The box is 13 x 13 x 7 inches; each book is 3-1/4 x 12 inches. The texts are not meant to be read in order. Rather, the artist tells me she "was inspired by the delicious feeling of discovery and intimacy that comes with finding slips of paper in old books." Why Diamond Ring? The author / artist notes she has always been "fascinated with the names of towns on maps and wondered who was chosen or permitted to decide on the name. Diamond Ring, Montana is a name that lodged in my imagination." The text etched in brass on the front four sides of the box reads, "The horizon presents itself, / unreachable as myself. / Better to stay here / here you know where you are." & Eugenie Torgerson has created a memorable book object, perfectly suited to her words. The idea of movement from place to place, a fascination with the unknown - the next place on the horizon, which is so very much a part of the American experience, is conveyed beautifully. When the viewer / reader sees and feels the beauty of the papers, the perfect craftsmanship and "discovers" the texts, the effect is irresistible. We are transported to some other time and place - imaginary yet rendered tangible through this "book." <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/10265.jpg >Image.</A><br>

Nadie Esta Solo [No One Is Alone]. Original Paintings by Fabian Harika. Design Bookbinding by Sol Rebora

[Buenos Aires, Argentina. 2008]. Unique artist&#39;s book, with 6 original mixed media paintings with pen and ink by Fabian Harika on Magnani paper and binding and design by Sol Rebora. Page size: 7 x 10.25 inches; 12pp. Bound by Sol Rebora: full yellow box calf, with circular cut out on the first third of the front panel revealing the first of six watercolors - this a yellow square with red dot in the middle and traces of pale blue at top and bottom with black ink lines at left, blind tooled line at the spine of both the front and back panels (as in a photo album), title stamped in white on smooth spine, turnins of white box calf with black lines stamped as double rules on the fore and top edge and single rules on the lower edge and inner edge, rear turnin with black lines stamped at inner edge in abstract design with double rule at fore and lower edge, signature stamped by the binder on rear turn-in, Sol Rebora, guards of yellow cover weight paper, headbands of blue and white, housed in yellow cloth clamshell box with title stamped in black on spine, colophon in the form of a circle printed in black and pasted down on the rear tray case noting "Original Painting by Fabian Harika and Design Bookbinding by Sol Rebora." & Each of the original watercolors by Fabian Harika is mounted to a stiff piece of white paper and preceded with a sheet of white that has a circular cut-out focusing on a specific part of the painting visible below. The cutouts vary in size. None is placed in the same spot. There is the idea of an "eye" in which the view of each watercolor is heightened by the cutout - as if the reader / viewer were spying on the "eyes" discernable in the watercolors. The title, NADIE ESTA SOLO - No One Is Alone - is the theme of the art and the book. The binding is beautiful - bright and sunny, as are the watercolors - in complete contrast to the rather dark theme hinted at by the title. Fabian Harika is a well-known Argentinean artist whose work has been selected for many juried competitions and exhibitions, include Museum Painting Salon Quinquela Martin 2008 (Special Jury Mention), Salon Belgrano Sivori Museum, 2004-2008, and CFI Award Federal Salon, 2008. With noted binder, Sol Rebora, this collaboration has created a slyly subtle, elegant book. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/10402.jpg >Image.</A><br>

The 48 miniature paintings of this luxurious fine art book are the modern culmination of medieval tradition of illuminated manuscripts (illustrated Haggadahs, in particular). As with the finest books of the Middle Ages, every page of The Szyk Haggadah&#151;from the illuminated capitals to the calligraphy to the painting itself&#151;is a virtuosic work of artistic accomplishment and deep scholarship.& & On the final dedication page of the volume, Szyk writes in French: &#147;I am but a Jew praying in art, and if I have succeeded in any measure, if I have gained the power of reception among the elite of the world, I owe it all to the teachings, traditions, and eternal virtues of my people.&#148;& & This is truly one of the most magnificent illuminated books of all times, and certainly the greatest illuminated Haggadah in centuries. It is the first book to be published on this scale entirely with ink jet printing.

        Drawn Blank Series [Signed]

Washington Green Fine art in association with Black Buffalo Artworks, Printed by GTZ Fine Art Editions, New York. 2008, 2008. LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION by Bob Dylan. This is the Limited Edition Graphics Standard Box set, comprising ten fine gallery quality colour prints of Gilclee on Museum Etching 350gsm paper, each print SIGNED by the artist. One of 295 numbered sets (a few out of series proofs also exist but were not commercially released.) Image size 21.5 x 16 inches, paper size 27.5 x 22 inches. Each of the graphics is supplied in individual bespoke, hand-made presentation wallets, and are encased in a presentation box. With accompanying &#39;Drawn Blank&#39; series paperwork. Absolutely fine/ as new. Dylan&#39;s autograph is notoriously difficult to obtain, and many secretarial examples and fakes abound- obviously these signatures are guaranteed as part of an official numbered release. Whilst travelling on tour between 1989 and 1992, Bob Dylan created a collection of drawings that were published in a book entitled &#39;Drawn Blank&#39; in 1994. These expressive works capture Dylan&#39;s chance encounters and observations. The creation of these portraits, interiors, landscapes, still lifes, nudes and street scenes were done to "relax and refocus a restless mind". Following a major exhibition in London in 2008, the prints were offered for sale as both individual graphics, a portfolio of three, a medium box of six, a standard box of ten, or a deluxe set of twenty-nine images. All formats were quickly sold out- such was the popularity of this collection that is was re-printed in 2009 as individual prints or collected as a set of eight, and it was again reprinted individually in 2010. This is a rare opportunity to obtain one of the original and more substantial collections from 2008.

Art & Print: The Curwen Story with original signed lithograph printed at the Curwen Studio, limited to 50 copies.

Tate Publishing Oct 2008. A lavish production featuring over a hundred and fifty colour and black and white illustrations supporting a 30,000 word text written by Alan Powers, a leading author of twentieth century design. The coloured lithograph is signed and numbered by Paula Rego and is an impressive production measuring 85cm x 62cm (approx. 2ft 10 ins x 2 ft ins). There is a video of Paula in the Curwen Studio overseeing the production. Follow the link. http://www.tate.org.uk/tateshots/episode.jsp?item=16076The Curwen Press, set up by the Reverend John Curwen in 1863, was initially concerned with printing sheet music, but made its name in the early 20th century as a printer of superb quality limited edition books. Using the newly developed technique of lithography, in the 1920s, the Press began encouraging young artists to illustrate their books and design end-papers and was soon commissioning such leading figures in the history of twentieth century British art as Paul Nash, Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious to contribute artwork. Hugely influential in terms of book-design, many of these early editions are now highly sought after collector's items. Publicity brochures and press advertising decorated by these artists aimed, in the words of Harold Curwen, to 'put the spirit of joy into your printed work'. In 2008, The Curwen Studio celebrates its half-centenary. Established in the late 1950's in response to a rising demand for original artists prints, the Curwen Studio was set up to work with artists and photographers in developing exciting new techniques in printmaking. Soon many of the most significant artists of the time were working at the studio. They included Barbara Hepworth, Patrick Heron, Henry Moore, John Piper and Graham Sutherland, who all produced prints under the management of Stanley Jones, whose skill and passion has continued to result in the production of truly unique prints and photographs at the Studio. His memories and experiences of working with a wide range of artists (from Paula Rego to the young Tracey Emin), demonstrate the potential of lithography as an expressive and experimental medium, and the skills required to maintain this freedom in a commercial environment. 'The Curwen Story' is one of an extended collaboration between artists and craftsmen-printers, unique in the art of the twentieth century in Britain. Charting the history of both publishing and print-making at Curwen, leading author on twentieth century British design Alan Powers looks at the role the Press played in shaping ideas of book-design from the 1920s onwards, and how artists working alongside Stanley Jones at the Studio have created prints that have helped to change public perceptions about Modernism.

No. 10 / Supreme Virtue for double SATB choir. Autograph musical manuscript of the complete full score

29 pp. + 2 pp. of additional manuscript apparently not included in the final version. Oblong folio (278 x 208 mm.). Unbound. Notated in pencil on 16-stave music manuscript paper. Folded. Signed and dated New York, Jan- April [19]97. . Supreme Virtue was commissioned by the Dale Warland Singers with the support of the Jerome Foundation and the Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University. The text consists of an English translation of verses from the "Tao te Ching." It was first recorded by the Seattle-based chamber choir Esoterics on the Terpsichore label in the winter of 2008. "For a few years I was the tenor section leader of a choir in Washington, and in singing with and composing for them I'd become more and more interested in the quasi-instrumental vocal gesture. Stephen Mitchell's pellucid translation of this verse of the Tao te ching - a series of moral challenges all beginning with the words "Can you?" - spurred me to explore this idea at length. The singers, divided into two SATB choirs, intone the first question in a dusky C-minor against a sighing backdrop of wind sounds: then, as the first choir utters the text's first challenge, the second choir refracts their words into marimba-like repeated notes, as if the long lines of the first choir were subjected to a kind of aural strobe. As the questions become tougher, so do the sounds: tenors and altos stab into the texture with horn-like interruptions, and the phrase "Can you?" disrupts the unwavering four-four pulse with insistent threes and twos. At a peak of intensity, a looping soprano-alto line spirits us away from pulse and chord, leading first to a melodic meditation based on the vowels of "Can you?" and then to a cadenza, in which chords appear and vanish into a shimmering, ever-present curtain of sound. A vision of equanimity is intoned in the open fifths of (both Western and Eastern) chant: then, as if elated by its discovery ("this is the supreme virtue") the chorus reworks its "Can you?" motive: a nudging half-step expands to a whole step, the harmony brightens to B-flat, and, in rhythms now more jubilant than insistent, the score spins to closure." www.markadamo.com

Wind in the Willows: Centenary Edition

London: Folio Society, 2008.. Illustrated by Charles van Sandwyk. Hardcover. Fine/Fine (slipcase). Folio - over 12" - 15" tall Limited Edition No. 539 of 1000 copies. A fine copy of this exquisite Folio Society edition which was justifiably their fasting-selling, limited edition of all time. Measuring 13" x 9¾", the folio is handbound in quarter vellum, blocked on the spine in 22-carat gold, with vellum tips and paper sides blocked in three shades of metallic foil. Top edges gilt. The calligraphy has been printed letterpress by the Logan Press. A wealth of new llustrations have been created by Canadian artist, Charles van Sandwyk. The book contains 16 colour plates, all tipped in by hand, with gold edges and exquisite gold borders; forty pen-and-ink drawings, including chapter heads and tails, as well as charming hand-drawn captions. Endpapers showing an architectural plan of Toad Hall have been printed by letterpress. Each copy contains a limitation spread with a tipped-in copperplate etching, hand-printed under the artist's supervision and signed by him with the limitation number. The volume is presented in a cloth-bound solander box, both of which are in fine condition. The book has been looked at (as it deserves to be!) so the binding is not tight as when new. There is a faint 1 cm surface scratch to the lower board; and a slight wave to the gilt page edges at the front and the back of the book both of which are really only noticeable when looking for defects. Other than those minor ones, there aren't any, and this is a superb copy of this hard-to-find limited edition. Heavy/oversize book. Additional postage charge may be required.
