Psychopts

New York: JMc & GHB, 2008. Fine in a fine jacket, housed in the publisher's slipcase.. Deluxe Edition. Small quarto in slipcase. Letter P of 26 lettered copies, SIGNED by Christopher Wool and Richard Hell. Includes an original word drawing in graphite pencil by Wool and Hell pairing "penis" and "peril," additionally signed by both artists, and bound into the book. (There were 1576 copies in total: 1500 of the trade edition in paperback, 50 numbered copies in hardcover, and 26 lettered copies such as this one.) Christopher Wool's word images are among the most sought after pieces in contemporary art. This collaboration with Richard Hell, one of the originators of punk music, explores the fusion of conceptual poetry and art by pairing words like incest and nicest, slave and salve, anus and stuns, perils and penis, etc. The eye is not quite sure what it sees, which is the point, sport.

Miyako Ishiuchi Photographs 1976 - 2005 (Signed Limited Edition)

Manfred Heiting, Los Angeles 2008 - This is a signed, limited edition of "Miyako Ishiuchi (Photographs 1976 - 2005)" published by Manfred Heiting/Cinubia Production in 2008 with a limitation of 100 hand signed and numbered copies this being number 68. Miyako Ishiuchi is widely regarded as one of the great Japanese photographers of the past half century and is the only women whose work was featured in Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian's reference work on Japanese Photobooks, "Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s". This book is a stunning book-object perfectly suited to Ishiuchi's work. A gorgeous production designed by Machiel Botman and published by Manfred Heiting, the book is bound in the unusual Leporello style, with two-page triton spreads printed recto and verso. On one side are images from her early work in the seventies, about Yokosuka (Yokosuka Story, Apartment and Endless Night). On the other side are images from her later work (1.9.4.7; 1906 to the Skin and Mother's). In each section, the covers of the original books are reproduced as well. As Sandra S. Phillips wrote in "The Art of Miyako Ishiuchi", "There is a quality of ambiguity in Miyako Ishiuchi's work that is memorable and distinctive. It is an ambiguity that comes from her particular sensibility to render objects as concrete and real while simultaneously representing them as essentially intangible and fragile.". Measuring approximately 10.75 x 8 inches, the book is bound in printed stiff boards (issued without a dust jacket) and housed in a maroon slipcase with OBI. The slipcase and book are in FINE condition with the book boards evidencing very minimal surface wear caused by the rubbing of the book while in the slipcase. The book has been signed and numbered (68 of 100) by Miyako Ishiuchi on the title page. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Fine copy of this Booker Listed masterpiece in unread pristine condition. Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction 2009. First UK Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, including the US. This edition now very scarce. O'Neill has Naipaul's genius for creating unforced ideological connections. And he knows perfectly well that when, on the last pages of his novel, he writes about a memory of Manhattan's skyline and the 'extraordinary promise in what we saw', he is hovering, like some novelistic Google Earther, over the sentence grids and prose plateaus of the last page of 'The Great Gatsby'

Sea of Poppies *** SIGNED ***

John Murray, 2008. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. SIGNED by the author to title page. A Fine copy in likewise Fine dustwrapper. Unread condition.Book 1 of the IBIS trilogy, shortlisted for the Booker prize 2008. We also have available Signed and dated UK Firsts of Book 2 of this trilogy, "River of Smoke" - see out listings. Synopsis: At the heart of this epic saga, set just before the Opium Wars, is an old slaving-ship, The Ibis. Its destiny is a tumultuous voyage across the Indian Ocean, its crew a motley array of sailors and stowaways, coolies and convicts. In a time of colonial upheaval, fate has thrown together a truly diverse cast of Indians and Westerners, from a bankrupt Raja to a widowed villager, from an evangelical English opium trader to a mulatto American freedman. As their old family ties are washed away they, like their historical counterparts, come to view themselves as jahaj-bhais or ship-brothers. An unlikely dynasty is born, which will span continents, races and generations. The vast sweep of this historical adventure spans the lush poppy fields of the Ganges, the rolling high seas, and the exotic backstreets of China. But it is the panorama of characters, whose diaspora encapsulates the vexed colonial history of the East itself, which makes Sea of Poppies so breathtakingly alive - a masterpiece from one of the world's finest novelists.

STEINE". Eine Sammlung von 20 Original- Graphit Zeichnungen.

2008 - 2008. je 21 x 29,7 cm, Auf Zeichenpapier. Ungerahmt.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to his wife

New York, March 1908. Letter. Folds from mailing, still about Fine, with envelope. A three-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED as "Pearl" (Grey was born Pearl Zane Gray) to his wife "Dolly" on three sheets of illustrated New Grand Hotel stationery with envelope postmarked March 1908. Grey discusses his rotten position: "I'm afraid I can't have Outing publish my book until everybody's got good and ready to let me.... And I, like an idiot signed that paper, which legally gives them the right to my photographs. Why didn't you or Murphy see that? If they don't choose to use the story & pictures I can't get the book published at all. It's most damnably sickening. I don't know what to do.... For a measly little hundred dollars I have about queered my chances.... Murphy says it will work out allright [sic]. I hope so, but tonight I can't see anything but black. Will be on the mountain tomorrow." Zane Grey decided to become a writer just five years before this letter when he wrote a fishing story that appeared in RECREATION MAGAZINE. Outing published Grey's third book, THE LAST OF THE PLAINSMEN, in 1908 complete with Grey's photographs. It was based on a trip Grey made out West with Col. "Buffalo" Jones in 1907. This trip was the turning point in Grey's life, but his book about Jones and his experiences in the Grand Canyon was not successful. It would be a few more years before Grey became a success with RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE. An outstanding early letter revealing the torment of a struggling writer.

Synopsis: Moving to remote Shetland has been unsettling enough for consultant surgeon Tora Hamilton; even before the gruesome discovery she makes one rain-drenched Sunday afternoon .Deep in the peat soil of her field she is shocked to find the perfectly preserved body of a young woman, a gaping hole in her chest where her heart has been brutally removed. Three rune marks etched into the woman's skin bear an eerie resemblance to carvings Tora has seen all over the islands: in homes she has visited, even around a fireplace in her own cellar. As she uncovers disturbing links to an ancient Shetland legend, the unfriendly detective, her smooth-talking boss and even her own husband are at pains to persuade her to leave well alone. In mint condition. This sophisticated Book of Hours was produced in 1503 at the behest of Bonaparte Ghislieri, a member of an important Bolognese family. In commissioning it, Ghislieri wanted to bring together several of the most famous artists of the period, each of whom was called upon to create a full-page miniature. The intention was to offer a sort of miniature anthology of the best that the Bologna school of illumination could produce at the time. Consequently, we see a succession of works by: Amico Aspertini (Adoration of the Shepherds), Lorenzo Costa (King David and his Lyre), Il Francia (Francesco Raibolini) (Saint Jerome), Matteo da Milano, (Annunciation), and Perugino, (St. Sebastian). This last is the only miniature ever painted by Raphael's teacher. Bologna was also the home of the scribe, Pierantonio Sallando, who taught grammar at the University of Bologna and was to become a famous professor of writing. The codex passed from the Ghislieris to the Albani family of Urbino, where it is documented in the 18th century; the following century it reached England, where it was purchased by Henry Yates Thompson in 1897. Since 1941 it has been kept in the British Library.

The book is full-bound in red leather with bevelled edges, all edges gilt, in matching cloth and leather slip-case. End-papers are hand-marbled paper, with a salmon fly, The Judge, tied by Peter Kealey, presented in a sunken mount inside the front board. The limitation page is signed by editor E.J. Malone, fly-tyer Peter Kealey and book-binder Ken Smith. This is essentially a social history of Irish angling, in the form of the diaries of John Macky, Inspector of Rivers to Lady Hamilton who owned much of the River Bann. Macky occupied the post from 1787 onwards. In 1798 the estate changed hands and a new, and thoroughly crooked, bailiff was appointed over Macky's head. Macky's "fears for his own position kept him from speaking out to anyone but his diary, telling of the actions of an unscrupulous employee and his family". Includes much of the daily life of the area around the Bann and its inhabitants in the years 1791 to 1809, as well as a detailed historical sketch of the Honorable The Irish Society which owns the fisheries of the lower Bann. "'The Judge' is an old Bann pattern (ca1850) which was devised by William Doherty of Bushmills .a well-known tier for the river Bann and its tributaries. The fly was first recorded by Francis Francis in his A Book on Angling (1867) as a fly for the river Bush." A splendid edition of a book which is both fascinating and an important part of Irish angling literature. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
