Ballard.""

The China Diary of George H. W. Bush: The Making of a Global President.

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2008. First edition of Bush's diary he dictated while de facto U.S. ambassador to the People's Republic of China in 1974-75. Octavo, original half cloth, illustrated. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Signed by former President George H.W. Bush and former Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger on the title page. Rare and desirable, signed by Bush and Kissinger. "George Bush's year in China laid the foundations for the pragmatic, prudent, personal foreign policy that would characterize his presidency. With superb annotations and analysis by Jeffrey Engel, a professor of history and public policy at Texas A&M, Bush's daily diary sheds light not only on 'the making of a global president' but on two nations in transition: late Maoist China, as it moved, tentatively, toward engagement with the international community; and the United States, as it absorbed the implications of defeat in Vietnam" (Glenn C. Altschuler Baltimore Sun). "The book is of unique historic, theoretical and practical value. Its ideal readership consists of international studies scholars and students of various disciplinary backgrounds, with particular interest in China studies as well as diplomatic and international business practioners. I highly recommend it" (Wenshan Jia Journal of Chinese Political Science).

CONSERVATORY FOR MY PROSPECTUSES AND SPECIMEN LEAVES

Newtown, PA: Bird & Bull Press, 2008. cloth, leather spine label, clamshell case with leather spine label. Bird & Bull Press. small folio. cloth, leather spine label, clamshell case with leather spine label. 90, (8) pages. Limited to only 100 numbered copies and out of print upon publication. This book combines Morris's brief descriptions of the books that he has published over 50 years complemented by bound-in examples of original prospectuses and leaves. Included are many scarce early prospectuses, of which he had kept a small hoard. There are 36 pages of brief commentaries on the books, facsimiles of relevant letters plus leaves from books which will be unknown to Morris's subscribers. The 46 inserts are bound-in and not removable, thus providing a permanent record of the progression and variety of works produced over a fifty-year period. As the inserts are so varied and quantities limited, no two copies are alike. This book is a perfect example of the value of doing leaf books as it demonstrates the progression of the Bird & Bull Press through actual examples of its work through 50 years. The prospectus for the present volume is loosely laid-in.

        Home Sweet Home.

North Bay, Canada:: Transformer Press,, 2008.. One-of-a-Kind. 38 x 12 x 3" with four spreads. Carousel format. Pop-ups. Fabric. Text handwritten. Includes bibliography. Signed and dated by the artist. Included for display are a set of Xeroxed booklets that replicate the information found in the booklets hidden in pockets on each page. Lise Melhorn-Boe: "Each of the 12 rooms in this quilted pop-up dollhouse-like book has toxins indicated by large red numbers. These correspond to information in booklets hidden in pockets on each page." Toxins in each booklet are color coded, for example, red for flammable material and orange for a corrosive substance. Heather Saunders, Harvesting Environmental Justice: "In viewing her environmental bookworks collectively, there is a disturbing sense of humanity being at risk from day one, evident in Endangered Species (2011), which features pink and blue onesies; Toxic Kids (2009), a paperdoll book; and Home Sweet Home (2009), a quilted dollhouse. Melhorn-Boe's cautionary tales are often delivered with a wry sense of humour, rhyming couplets, and formats ranging from tunnel books to star carrousel books. These appealing features have a similar resonance as the stereotypical woman saying in a suspiciously enthusiastic tone, 'I'm fine.'

        Collagebuch eins.

Flörsheim, Main, Germany:: Peter Malutzki,, 2008.. Edition of 20. 20 x 28.4 cm (7.9 x 11.2"); 36 pages, Green mould-made paper. Design, handset, and letterpress by Peter Malutzki. Linen-over-board cover with front label. In slipcase. Numbered and signed by the artist. Collage material from original pages of old books (some over 20 years old), red mould made-paper, and old correction labels. Peter Malutzki: "'Collagebuch eins' was not just meant to be a book with 14 collages pasted into it; it was an attempt (at least, it was my - probably still typically encyclopedic - goal) to exemplify and call into question the architecture of a book that is supposed to combine 'texts' and images. The 'textual message' is conveyed by rectangular shapes printed in red using brass rules. Starting with a simple rectangle on the first page, the shapes are increasingly sub-divided on each page in the course of the book. The succinct message in these 'dummy text blocks' on the first page is: 'a rectangle.' On the next page, the rectangle is divided horizontally by a line through the middle, so the message is 'two rectangles on top of each other.' On the following page, the shape is divided vertically in the middle, producing 'two rectangles next to each other.' A slightly more complicated division of the rectangle produces '12 small rectangles surrounding a large rectangle.' All of these red 'text blocks' are on the left side of the double-page spread. On the right side, the collage images come into play. A green rectangle serves as their frame or 'connection point.' To me, their unpredictable, spontaneous forms create an intriguing contrast with the strict blocks of lines. For the collages, I used pages from old books as well as red mould-made paper and red-and-white proofing stickers from the 19th century. The paper in these old books, some of them printed more than 200 years ago, and the brass rule printing on the green mold-made paper bring these two levels together. The book paper contributes 'real' legible text to the image pages, even if only in a fragmentary way, while the intended 'text pages' are seen more as graphic images.

Sebastian Copeland. Arctica. The Vanishing North.

Flowerball Cosmos (3D)

      - offset lithograph, 2008, signed and numbered from the edition of 300, Publisher Kaikai Kiki Ltd., Tokyo. 71 x 71cm diameter Takashi Murakami is a Japanese artist combining the fine and the commercial art worlds. Often categorized alongside artists working within the tradition of Pop Art, such as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Jeff Koons, Murakami's work has achieved a widespread level of fame beyond the art world. His innovative "Superflat" aesthetic—combining classical Japanese art with contemporary Japanese pop culture—has made him one of the most innovative artists working today. He continues to explore the links between traditional printmaking and Japanese styles of comics in post-war society in his highly graphic, vibrantly colored works. Despite its outward playfulness, Murakami's art acts as a cultural critique with subversive undertones hidden in its imagery. Born on February 1, 1962 in Tokyo, Japan, where he currently lives and works, Murakami has embraced commerce through the founding Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., an artist management agency and studio. With his popular collaboration with the fashion label Louis Vuitton, Murakami has established himself as a pioneer of promoting art as a brand. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world, include those held at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Gagosian Gallery in London, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and the Versailles Palace.       2008 - Single etching from 5 plates on 1 sheet. Edition of 68. Each print signed by the artist and numbered on the reverse, 152.9 x 113 cm 'The starting point for this print was Thomas More's Utopia. Utopia is a pun on the Greek ou topos meaning 'no place'. 'I was playing with the idea of there being no Heaven. People are very wedded to the idea of a neat ending: our rational brains would love to tidy up the mess of the world and to have either Armageddon or Heaven at the end of our existence. But life doesn't work like that - it's a continuum.' [1] Prints are no secondary art form for Grayson Perry, they are considered, large-scale final pieces. A vocal advocate of therapy and analysis, in the Map of Nowhere Perry explores his own belief system; His opinions contend with those he finds crowding around him in wider society. The print's grand proportions encompass the artist's taste for niggling detail. Perry started the drawing in the top left-hand corner, and worked towards the bottom right-hand corner, without planning the in-between; instead ideas were allowed to emerge, leading from one to another, through the drawing process. As also seen in his subsequent major etchings, Map of an Englishman (2004) or his 'playscape', Print for a Politician (2005), Perry prefers to leave ink on the plate during the printing process; he avoids creating too crisp an image in order to evoke an antique look. Perry is yoking his map to its historical pedigree. With this etching, Perry is working from a big historical model rather than one from fine art: the medieval mappa mundi (map of the world) provides a recognisable template. As pre-Columbian diagrams, they would illustrate a sum of knowledge, acting as both instructive and decorative objects, making connections vivid and comprehensible. The Map of Nowhereis based on a famous German example, the Ebstorf Map, which was destroyed in the Second World War. It showed Jesus as the body of the world, with his head, hands and feet marking four equidistant points around the circle. Perry spikes the tradition with contemporary social comment. Within a circular scheme, like the Ebstorf Map, or the existent Hereford Mappa Mundi, he presents a flattened-out analysis of his world - from jibes about current affairs to the touchstones of his personal life. Where the Ebstorf Map has the world unfolding around Jerusalem, Perry's personal world view encompasses a cacophony of ideas and preoccupations, with 'Doubt' right at the centre. The artist's alter ego Claire gets a sainthood, while people pray at the churches of global corporations: Microsoft, Starbucks, Tescoes. Tabloid cliches abound, each attached to a figure or building: 'the new black', 'kidults', 'binge drinking', having-it-all'. Top right, the 'free-market-economy' floats untethered, preempting the credit crunch that was to take hold in the autumn of 2008. All-over labels demand that the map is read - or quizzed - close up. This is a clearly articulated satire, and while Perry adopts a medieval confusion of scale and proportion, the diagrammatic style is as adamant as its religious forerunners. Beneath, there is a drawing of figures on a pilgrimage, set in a realistic landscape. They are at final staging post before making their way up to a monastery at the top of a mountain beyond, which is hit by a beam of light, coming from the artist's bottom. No. V of XV of the Special Edition, in a special binding designed and executed by Julian Thomas, who was taught bookbinding by the late John Ewart Bowen, who himself was apprenticed to George Fisher in the bindery of the original Gregynog Press. A Fellow of Designer Bookbinders and its President the year this book was published, Julian Thomas' bindings are found in many of the world's major public and private collections. Also accompanying the Special Edition is a signed and numbered print, "A Twitter of Linnets", specially engraved by Colin See-Paynton for this edition, and printed by him on Japanese Gampi Vellum hand-made paper in an edition of 25, this no. V. Colin See-Paynton spent more than four years extensively researching and writing the text, and creating the sixty-one new wood engravings for this illustrated lexicon of avian collective nouns: an unprecedented achievement. In a critical essay David Alston, Arts Director of the Arts Council Wales, wrote: 'not since Thomas Bewick, who both wrote and engraved in the late eighteenth century, have both literary and pictorial aspects been found conjoined in the one talent as here in this work'. That the observation and study of the natural world has been a lifelong interest is evident both from the engravings and the enthusiasm revealed in the text. From 'Abandonment of Cuckoos' to 'Zephyr of Long-Tailed Titmice' it enriches our knowledge of avian nomenclature far beyond the well-known 'Gaggle of Geese' - though that, too, is included. Colin See-Paynton has researched the origin of the nouns drawing from sources as far back as the fifteenth-century, and gives some detailed insight into the species under discussion (N.B., from web site of the Press).***DESCRIPTION: Fully bound in leather, with black goatskin cut away to reveal (at a lower level) calfskin dyed in light peacock blue and light turquoise, with gold onlaid shapes of black calfskin gilded and textured, with edges cut at 45 degrees to reveal thin edges of the black calfskin.         The Structure of Rime (with signed ATP print and prospectus)

San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2008. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Lobdell, Frank. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 96 p. Signed by Artist. Limited Edition of 275 copies, this No. 68; with an etching signed by the artist in a separate paper folder, this copy the single ATP (Artist's Trial Proof) out of 25 prints (20 + ATP + 2 AP + 2 PP) of this etching. Robert Duncan (1919-1988) was one of the most influential American poets of the second half of the twentieth century. Two of his major works were large serial poems entitled "Structure of Rime" and "Passages". He numbered each sequence, publishing them in magazines as they were written, and then inserting them into his books of poetry, collections covering distinct chronological periods. A collected edition of "The Structure of Rime" never appeared, probably because Duncan did not want to close off the possibility that he might compose more poems in that series and preferred to keep them in the train of his poetry as a whole. Twenty years after Duncan's death, the Arion Press published for the first time together the thirty-one poems of the series that appeared during Duncan's lifetime, plus seven poems identified as "Structure of Rime" in his notebooks that he had not published, one published posthumously in a literary magazine in the year of his death, six first published in this volume (N.B., info from the book's prospectus). Frank Lobdell (1921-2013) was one of America's premier postwar abstract painters, he "maintains a spiritual engagement with his work, reinventing and recycling the ideas behind his imagery" (from prospectus); in 1998, he was elected to the National Academy of Design. The author and artist were friends, each greatly admiring the other's work; this volume, bringing together their poetry and art, is a wonderful testimonial to them both in a striking work by the inimitable Arion Press. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in full rust-coloured Japanese cloth over boards, grey paper spine label with black lettering, inset into the front and back boards are two black and white Lobdell etchings with aquatint, fore- and bottom edges uncut, two black and white photographs of the poet bound in; type handset in Perpetua, printed on German mouldmade Zerkall Book Laid paper, quarto size (almost 11.25" tall), pagination: (1)-95, colophon (96); limited edition of 275, this no. 68. The matching publisher's slipcase is covered in the same rust Japanese cloth with grey paper sides, grey paper spine label with black lettering. The accompanying print comes from various editions of forty small etchings with aquatint made by Frank Lobdell from 1987-2000; this print is "Untitled, 8.29.90", and is the single ATP from an edition of 25 for this print, image size 6 x 3-78, paper size 12-1/2 x 11-1/2, medium being etching; ink on paper, SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY THE ARTIST; with a tissue guard, enclosed in a heavy grey paper folder with dark grey lettering on the front. Accompanying the book are two items, the first being the prospectus which is 16 pages long, with information about how the book came to be printed, photographs of both the author and artist, and reproductions of the artist's work both in black and white and in colour; the second item being an invitation card to the publication party being held in San Francisco, at the Arion Press, on November 19, 2008. ***CONDITION: Volume is fine, as new from the publisher and entirely free of prior owner markings, in a fine slipcase. The signed etching is fine as well, also its protective paper folder, which has been kept in the original publisher's plastic sleeve. The prospectus and invitation to the publication party are fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
