Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. If perticulair (sic) care and attention is not paid to the Laidies we are determined to foment a Rebelion, and will not hold ourselves by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation."Abigail Adams' sentiment was eloquently elaborated upon by Elizabeth Cady Stanton in her statement before Congress, THE SOLITUDE OF SELF, and which stands as a philosophic cornerstone of American women's rights. The founding fathers may not have remembered the ladies, but "the ladies" took it upon themselves to change their lives, and the lives of others. Each of the women honored herein did "foment a Rebelion" in their own field, forever changing and re- defining the American life. This is a beautiful homage to "the Ladies." See an Image. PRIVATE TYPECASTERS, PRESERVING THE CRAFT OF HOT-METAL TYPE INTO THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

Bird & Bull Press, Newtown, PA 2008 - small 4to. quarter morocco with Japanese cloth sides, leather spine label. 194 pages. First edition, limited to 150 numbered copies. The private press has been with us in one form or another for 200 years or more. The equipment for a small private press was inexpensive, required little space and almost anyone could learn to do basic printing in a short time. Private typecasting is entirely different. A single machine weighs almost a ton and a lot of practice and experience is required in order to decently produce the most basic work. This once-costly equipment came into the hands of printing enthusiasts when hot-metal typesetting was forced into decline by the computer. The members of this hot-metal fraternity comprise a network of small shops using the machines and matrices which once supported the hot-metal letterpress era. They are, in effect, a group of small, working museums. The work of fifteen of these typecasters has been gathered into the pages of this book. Here you will see unknown, newly-created types, ancient types cast from 200-year-old matrices, proprietary types and a beautiful Civilit? face designed by Hermann Zapf, which was never released to the commercial market. There are five fold-out pages, two of which open together to make a 32-inch spread. One of the fold-outs is a recreated page from the 36-line Gutenberg Bible with rubrication. It took six months to turn the printed images on the original page into a complete font of hand-fitted metal types. Printed on dampened handmade paper, this leaf required a week's work, and handling it is as close as most of us will get to experiencing the genuine page. A biographical sketch of each contributor precedes his alphabets and the specimen pages which show the alphabets in use. Produced over a 14-month period, the labor and expense lavished on this work exceeds any previous book from Bird & Bull Press. The Private Typecasters, a 194-page small folio printed on Zerkall mould-made paper, is beautifully bound in quarter morocco with Japanese cloth sides and leather spine label. The same cloth and spine label are used on the clamshell case which houses the book. Prospectus loosely inserted. quarter morocco with Japanese cloth sides, leather spine label [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Pretend You're Actually Alive

New York: PPP/Andrew Roth, 2008. New York: PPP/Andrew Roth, 2008. First Edition. Softcover.. Near Fine/Near Fine. 4to. Unpaginated (ca 200pp). Printed wraps in chipboard slipcase with wraparound. Edition of 1000 copies. Numerous Colour plates. More images available on request. Rough and raw. Leigh LedareÕs Pretend YouÕre Actually Alive is an uncompromisingly intimate portrait of his mother, of complex and unconventional family relationships, sexuality, and agingÑa raw and starkly revealing collaboration between mother and son. Ledare has created a provocative body of work that veers from maternal tenderness to pornographic performance, and a family album that sits somewhere between theatre and document.& & In describing his motherÕs sexuality, Ledare writes, ÒShielding herself from her own sense of aging; attempting to trade on her beauty before her looks waned; procuring an intimacy with me, often through a substitute figure; laying claim to posterity; and in a very poignant way as an attempt to undermine her fatherÕs expectations on her, both as his daughter and as the mother of me and my brother. She had never wanted to be normal.Ó& & Tina Peterson, a former ballerina prodigy turned professional stripper, uses her overtly sexualized identity as an uncompromising display performed daily in front of her sonÕs curious lens. As she poses draped in lace, revealing her genitalia to the camera, we are witness to a woman determined to retain the attributes of youth and beauty, whilst renewing and reinventing her identity behind a sexualized faade.& & Pretend YouÕre Actually Alive is a brutal revelation. Unlike similar photographic journals produced by artists such as Richard Billingham or Nan Goldin, the power of this work is in the collaboration. Petersen is more than LedareÕs muse; she is her sonÕs co-conspirator. Beyond the Oedipal connotations, sexual taboos and narcissism, it would be difficult to imagine a more complex portrait of sexuality. (from Claxton Projects)

Bound by Joelle Leavitt Webber: hand sewn in dark green cloth, exposed blue thread at spine, hand painted endpapers by Nancy Leavitt, housed in custom-made green cloth clamshell box lined with hand-painted endpapers by Ms. Leavitt. The text is accomplished in watercolor lettering by the artist and is accompanied by pastel painting on wet paper then covered with paste. The format is an accordion fold with single signatures at either end of the foldout. and both the front and back of the accordion foldout are painted. The abstract painting which runs the length of the book represents a color shift beginning with an early spring day moving into night then blossoming into a summer day. The text, a poem by Robin Furth, is redolent with the sights and sounds of the earth's yearly renewal - which Ms. Leavitt has captured in the beautiful greens, yellows, and purples that surround the shades of green and blue of the text. Robin Furth was personal research assistant to Stephen King (whom she met will working toward her Ph.D. at University of Maine) and is the author of the THE DARK TOWER A COMPLETE CONCORDANCE. She now lives in England with her husband, the English poet, Mark Rutter. Both her poetry and prose are published, as are her designs and text for comics.Ms. Leavitt's work is held by private collectors as well as Institutions such as the Portland Museum of Fine Art, Bowdoin College, Yale University, Western Michigan University, Wellesley College, Auckland New Zealand City Library, and the University of New England among others. The Tales of Beedle the Bard (Signed First Edition)

New York: Children's High Level Group / Arthur A. Levine Books, 2008. New York: Children's High Level Group / Arthur A. Levine Books, 2008. First American trade edition. Fine. A Fine copy in the publisher's original illustrated boards. Slightest pushing to the spine ends, otherwise unworn. No dust jacket, as issued. Signed by the author on the half-title and with the security hologram present. After the success of the Harry Potter series, Rowling created this spin-off work of short stories, including "The Tale of the Three Brothers" which figures prominently in the plot of "The Deathly Hallows" as well as four other short tales. The author originally created seven handwritten manuscripts in 2007 as gifts for the people associated with the series, auctioning one off for charity (it brought 1.95 million pounds). The following year it was published and released in this edition and in a deluxe edition. However, unlike previous releases, there was only one signing event for this book, at the National Library of Scotland for a group of around 200 children, ages 8 - 11, selected through a lottery. Fine.

Die Felsgräbernekropole der Qubbet el Hawa bei Assuan. I. Abteilung (Band 1-3).

Artist Monograph. As New/As New. 426pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English, French and German. Designed by Hans Werner Holzwarth. "Christopher Wool became known in the mid-1980s through paintings produced with rubber rollers commonly used to simulate decorative wallpaper patterns on walls. By 1988 he had hit stride with his dry, dead-pan word paintings while continuing to explore the possibilities of pattern painting. Since the 1990s, he has been developing the painterly qualities of his work, using a mostly black-and-white palette, starting from abstract lines drawn with a spray gun or layered stock images, overpainting silkscreens on linen, wiping out images, with a widening variety of media, a process that can involve photography, silkscreen, and, in the new millennium, also the computer. This monograph is staggering in scope and depth, exploring Wool’s work in large-scale reproductions, production Polaroids, and installation photos by Wool himself". Drawings by Austin Osman Spare for V.S.W./ Poems and Masks,/Poetry and Art (Three Complementary Volumes, Signed)

London: Mandrake Press Ltd. / I.H.O. books, 2008. London: Mandrake Press Ltd. / I.H.O. books, 2008. A Fine, three volume set, issued in a limited edition of only 59 numbered copies. Laid in is an original handwritten letter from Wainwright to Spare, and also a cheque signed by Spare. Each of the three volumes contain a numbered, limitations bookplate. From the Publisher: "These hardbacks landscape format, 8.5 ins x 12ins. Sheets are 120 gramme watermarked goatskin parchment paper. All three books are uniformly bound in black faux leather elegantly blind stamped with distinctly Sparean profile of face towards for edge of both front and back board. Place ribbon. The binding method used is innovative and is noted for its tremendous strength: the leaves being both gripped and glued in place. It is quite impossible to remove a page; the paper would tear long before the binding compromised. The three volumes are complementary and the publisher, has avoided imposing arbitrary numbers upon the volumes. So, in no particular order:-Drawings by Austin Osman Spare for V.S.W., A drawing book of 24 images drawn by Spare for Vera in 1944 when Spare visited her in Helston, Cornwall. The title page has a image by Spare of his (horned) head merging upwards into a profile of Vera Wainwright. The original cover of the drawing book carrying Spare's inscription to Wainwright is also reproduced. These drawings have only previously been published in an edition of 24 portfolio folders, each one containing one of the original drawings. The closing pages provide brief biographies of Spare and Wainwright. The last two pages presents a speculation concerning numerical analysis of Spare's work and the significance of the word "One" and the point within in the circle in relation to Spare's work and philosophy. Poems and Masks. 44pp An illustrated 5pp article by Eileen White describes Wainwright from the point of view of someone living in the village of Mappowder in Dorset where she lived the last years of her life. Whilst aware of her literary connections with the Powys family what emerges is a vibrant picture of the woman herself by someone who came to know her well. Poems and masks was initially published by the Toucan Press in 1968, the same Channel Island publisher which issued Gull's Beack and Black to Black by Kenneth Grant. The biographical note and introduction to this edition plus that of the second US edition are reproduced as are the poems plus 8 additional ones, previously unpublished. Spare's illustrations are reproduced together with other relevant vignettes and illustrations, though the original illustrations are carefully identified thus. Poetry and Art, 80pp. A 2pp illustrated article discusses Spare's use of the mask icon in his philosophy whilst further testament to its significance in Spare's circle is here testified to by the inclusion of a short story by Frederick Carter edited and provided an introduction for Spare's Focus of Life. The story, illustrated with vignettes of Spare's use of masks in his art. A yarn of an artistic genius who moves from wax work faces to major art fraud revealing occult mysteries relating to Rosicrucianism and Shakespeare. Spare and Wainwright planned to publish together a monthly magazine to be called "Art and Letter". Spare's design for a title page including hoped for contributors is reproduced plus some relevant letters from Wainwright to Spare. Then follow 8 short stories by Wainwright; some are very short indeed, literary vignettes really. These are far more explicitly occult than her poems. They are by no means cosy with two describing the perception of indescribably horror. In another an enigmatic stranger proves to be a nature spirit. Suitable illustrations supplied by Spare to Wainwright including a very fine satyr's head. One drawing featuring a wrecked cart axle forming a crucifix with a tree with a crow torn to pieces in the foreground explicitly illustrates the last story presented "Corporate Worship". In this enigmatic tale the narrator eschews prayer in church to worship in nature only to find the vicar, who is also some form of animal spirit, leading her in prayer there. One feels such ambiguity lies at the heart of Wainwright's approach. She also perceived ambiguity in Spare himself. In one letter to him she said "... I conclude that you are on the threshold of sainthood but have not yet crossed it! You still face darkness often, but you could turn towards he light - as it is there at your elbow. You could be quite a wonderful person, but to change a metaphor - there is still a little devil at your coat-tail! A further section reproduces Spare's drafts for Poems and Masks. Mostly very rough but with some striking, quite finished, faces that were not used, despite them being far more married to the text than those that were. Wainwright was not without artistic ability herself and four pictures by her of the Devon and Cornwall countryside are included plus some contemporary images of the village in Cornwall where Spare visited her. 7pp reproduce drawings with notes that Spare gave to Wainwright which are instructive concerning his composition of pictures, the use of exaggerated perspective akin to his sidereal portraits".. Limited/Signed/HandNumbered. BlackFauxLeather/PlaceRibbon. Fine/No Jacket, As Issued. Illus. by Austin Osman Spare. Landscape 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

It is actually the best copy of this book I have seen, and the faults are mentioned for accuracy. - The dust jacket is also in near fine and has not been price clipped with a price of £14.99 shown.
