Imperial 4to album (33 x 24.5 cm). 12 drawings in numerous brightly coloured gouaches plus gold and silver, on pith paper (30 x 21.5 cm), each drawing mounted by its corners in an album of mulberry-bark(?) paper and framed with 4 strips of blue silk, and with a loose tissue leaf inserted before each drawing and an extra blank album leaf before the first drawing. Contemporary rice-straw(?) pasteboards, with the contemporary "Tingqua" label.

Twelve spectacular and extremely detailed Chinese drawings of Chinese deities, executed in dozens of brightly coloured gouaches plus gold and silver by the Tingqua studio, established in Guangzhen (Canton province) in the 1830s. Tingqua, also known as Guam Lianchang (ca. 1809-1870 or soon after) was the leading artist in the export business that flourished after China's defeat in the First Opium War (1839-1842) opened the country to foreign trade. He and his slightly older contemporary Sunqua (active 1830-1870) pioneered the genre of pith paintings for the export market. The drawings show considerable originality in the rendition of the deities and their attributes, which sometimes makes it difficult to identify the deity intended. As usual with pith-paper drawings made for export, they show a mix of Chinese and Western influences, the faces here clearly following Western art (Tingqua was a protégé of George Chinnery), but the present drawings may also show some Tibetan influences. Since pith-paper drawings were rarely signed, few can be attributed to an artist or studio on documentary evidence. The present set is a rare example of a group of drawings (clearly made as a set) preserved in its contemporary album with the Tingqua studio's label. The figures are much more detailed than those in most pith-paper drawings.Several drawings show one or more broken corners or other small marginal defects, and sometimes an end of one of the blue ribbons has come loose, but the drawings themselves are in fine condition. The paper reinforcing the spine has torn at the hinges and the lower right corner of the front board is abraded, but the album binding is still in very good condition. A remarkable series of large, brightly coloured and unusually detailed pith-paper drawings of Chinese gods: rare documented drawings of the famous Tingqua studio, with their letterpress label.

        Thirteen Reasons Why - TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY - 13 (true first printing SIGNED)

      Razorbill, New York 2007 - Razorbill. New York. 2007. 288 pages. Book and DJ are fine. $16.99 price intact on DJ. SIGNED by the author on the title page. This title is notorious for being misclassified as a first edition, first printing.and for good reason. The first edition and the second edition have similar copyright pages with a full numberline 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. Both also show the last printing date as 2007. So the copyright pages while not identical would still lead one to believe they have a first edition however once you get past this, the differences are easily distinguishable. The first edition has blank endpapers up through at least 9 printings. The Second edition (whose copyright page also looks like a first) has illustrated map endpapers, 4 pages of praise before the first page of story text and an added section in the rear of the book with added material like 13 questions for the author. The third edition has added a half-title page with a picture of a cassette. The 4th edition is the 10 year anniversary edition which is completely different than the first 3 editions. As for Dust Jackets, the True First Edition, first printing DJ has a red quote in the upper right hand corner on the front. This quote is by Chris Crutcher and is present for at least the first 9 printings of the true first edition. The rear of DJ has a Gordon Korman quote and no mention of Added Bonus Material. The Second edition DJ replaced the red Crutcher blurb on front with a - The New York Times Best Seller - statement. They also added a Sherman Alexie review to the middle of the DJ front. The rear of the 2nd Edition DJ has a new section titled - added bonus material. The Korman quote has been replaced by a Kirkus review. The inside of the DJ has now become a blue and white map. The Third edition DJ also lacks the red Crutcher blurb on upper corner of front and instead states International Best Seller translated into 31 languages. The 4th Edition is the 10th Anniversary Edition which is entirely different and has a silver DJ. Keep in mind, the change in DJ and book is a Second Edition, not a second printing. At least the first 9 printings of the first edition have the 1st issue DJ with the red Crutcher blurb on the upper right corner. If the DJ says New York Times Bestseller, it is a second edition despite the copyright page. Basically, if you have map endpapers, 4 pages of praise before the first page of text, 13 questions for the author in the rear, you have a second edition regardless of the full numberline on the copyright page. Hope that helps anyone trying to track down the true first edition, first printing in first issue DJ. True first edition, first printings in first issue DJ have dried up. This is a true first edition, first printing in first issue DJ signed by the author on the title page. An incredible copy. Tight, crisp and unread condition. The colander box was made by The Fine Book Bindery, Wellingborough, and bound in Brillianta cloth and Passport Gypsum lining paper. The illustrations in the text are of suite of hand coloured lithographs by Paula Rego. This is a sumptuous production produced to a very high standard. The text was translated from the Portuguese by Paula Rego and Anthony Rudolf.
