        Angelique and the Pearl Necklace

Foolsgold Studio Vashon, WA: Foolsgold Studio. 2007. One of 60 copies, 50 of which are for sale, all signed and numbered by the artist / author, Donald Glaister, each book on pages of painted stiffened fabric on which dimensional constructions are mounted, text printed on Zerkall Frankfurt paper. Page size: 15-1/4 x 9-1/4 inches; 40pp. Bound by Donald Glaister: quarter leather made of Nigerian goatskin with wood veneers and cloth over boards, housed in drop spine box made at Book Lab II. The artist tells us that this new book is inspired by hand-made wooden sailboats, citing their custom craftsmanship, exotic materials and a balance of wild adventure and the need to survive it all. The result, he adds, is a happy combination of these elements resulting in a beautiful contradiction: a craft that is serenely graceful yet brutally sound. His book is an homage to the material and spiritual grace of these boats and to sailing. The text is a two-part poem with studies of the materials used to make sail boats, the spirit of sailing, and the rhythm of the sea. Most of the book's painted, stiffened fabric pages have original collages of painted cloth, wood veneer, brass, cork, linen thread and acrylic paint - all materials used in boat building. The poem is printed letterpress by Jessica Spring at Springtide Press in Scala Sans typeface. The result is an intriguingly beautiful book with images at once reminiscent of ancient Greek or Roman triremes or Viking Drakkar (Dragon) war ships, but at the same time completely contemporary or rather anticipating future designs. The perfections of Mr. Glaister's book construction, not to mention the overwhelming beauty of each page on which a variety of materials are organized and manipulated to make an astonishingly original work of art, directly correspond to the beauty and exacting skill necessary to build a wood sail boat. By deconstructing the idea a "boat" - as well as the very notion of navigating on water - Mr. Glaister has constructed a perfect book. See an Image.

Bluebird. Autograph musical manuscript of a setting for two female voices with instrumental accompaniment of Herman Melville&#39;s poem, "Bluebird." A complete working draft

5 pp. Folio (355 x 280 mm.). Notated in pencil with additional markings in coloured ink. Signed and dated 2007. . Tsontakis studied with Hugo Weisgall, Felix Greissle and Roger Sessions. His honours include the Charles Ives Living Award, the Grawemeyer, two Kennedy Center Friedheim Awards (1989, 1992), a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1995), a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (1996) and numerous commissions.& & "[His] early works are written in a dissonant chromatic idiom not unlike that of Sessions. His musical language soon shifted, however, towards a classically-influenced style characterized by large-scale harmonic prolongations and what he calls &#39;the timeless gesture&#39;, a reference to the past through evocation rather than quotation. With the String Quartet no. 3 &#39;Carragio&#39; (1986) he arrived at an idiosyncratic tonal language propelled by a non-minimalist, Beethovenian use of repetition. Another primary feature of his work, particularly notable in the Byzantium Kanon (1986) and Stabat mater (1990), is the influence of sacred music of the Greek Orthodox church. Secular folk music of the same region figures prominently in the oratorio Erotokritos (1982) and other works." Eric Moe in Grove online

The Children of Hurin - UK Deluxe Edition Signed By Christopher Tolkien & Alan Lee on Publishers Bookplate

London: Harper Collins, 2007. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Alan Lee. Signed by Illustrator & Editor. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Children of Hurin by J.R.R. Tolkien, published April 2007 by Harper Collins. Signed by the editor and illustrator, Christopher Tolkien and Alan Lee, to special bookplate, featuring Lee&#39;s motif of the Helm of Hador, attached to the half title page. "The Children of Hurin, UK De Luxe Edition The first standalone tale of Middle-earth since 1977, and the first complete version of one of J.R.R. Tolkien&#39;s &#39;Great Tales&#39;, with many exclusive features:" "Drawing together J.R.R. Tolkiens original manuscripts, using many sources spaced out over decades, Christopher Tolkien has constructed a narrative without any editorial invention." "Includes a brand new red and black Map of Beleriand specially drawn by Christopher Tolkien, which appears as a fold-out sheet." "Contains eight colour paintings and twenty-five pencil sketches, specially commissioned from award-winning artist, Alan Lee." "Features an exclusive colour frontispiece painting by Alan Lee." "Includes a specially written introduction and appendix on the history and writing of the tale by Christopher Tolkien." "Quarter-bound in blue with grey boards, stamped in gold foil with a unique motif of the Helm of Hador created by Alan Lee, and housed in a matching custom-built slipcase." "Printed on superior quality paper and including a silk ribbon marker." "This edition available for a limited time only." With Houghton Mifflin wishing to reach out and do something special for the loyal Tolkien fans, along with Christopher Tolkien&#39;s reluctance to grant public appearances, they conceived the idea for a signed bookplate, which Christopher Tolkien and Alan Lee both agreed to. It seems approximately 900 bookplates were signed, with less than 500 for distribution in the US, and 250 for the UK, with the remainder held for other promotions. I know of three that were given away as prizes on the Tolkien Library web site, during the "Children of Hurin" Release Party. A very hard to find edition, with the signed bookplate. Don&#39;t expect to see many of these for sale, as most will end up in private collections. This Deluxe Edition is matched in style and design to the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of &#39;The Lord of the Rings&#39;, and The Deluxe Hobbit that were concurrently issued in 2004. Digital photo&#39;s available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.. Signed by Illustrator & Editor. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. As New/No Jacket, as Issued. Illus. by Alan Lee. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. As New / No Jacket, as Issued.

        Alpha Botanica

[Portland, Oregon:] Wiesdruck, [2007] One of thirty-three black and white copies out of a total edition of forty-five copies. . Bound by Claudia Cohen in full black morocco with all-over botanical design in gilt. Gilt floral endpapers. . 4 15/16" x 4 3/4." . The alphabet project began in the fall of 2004 with a few trial capitals and many sketches to ascertain the viability of a Yiddish-English book of poems illustrated with engraved images and capitals. From this grew designs for two sets of botanical alphabets, one Roman and one Hebrew. "Alpha Botanica evolved out these alphabets for Paper Towers and became a collaboration with bookbinder extraordinaire, Claudia Cohen. The remainder of the capitals were engraved by the summer of 2006…" (Wiesdruck Press website).

        ON THE BEACH

New York City, NY: Aperture Foundation, 2007. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Aperture Foundation, 2007. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 80 pages. Exhibition catalog presented as an Artist Book. One of the greatest photography books of our time. The first and only edition. The single largest book ever published by the Aperture Foundation. Published in a very small and limited one-time-only print run as a hardcover original. The book is now rare. A magnificent production by Richard Misrach, Fabio Cutro, and Dana Faconti: Oversize-volume format in wide oblong shape. The book weighs 12 pounds. Pictorial hard boards, as issued. Photographs and text by Richard Misrach. Publisher&#39;s original cardboard box. The box is integral to the edition because it is printed on one side with the title, ISBN, and original publication price. Printed on thick coated stock paper to the very highest standards. In thick plastic covers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the travelling exhibition which commenced at the Art Institute of Chicago in November, 2007 and went on to other major venues in 2008. Presents Misrach&#39;s singular vision of the sea as the ultimate visual manifestation of Man&#39;s vulnerability and fragility in our perilous times. The book is the most oblique (and therefore compelling) photographic meditation on the meaning of 9/11 thus far. "Internationally renowned for his carefully considered, beautifully rendered epic works, Misrach hones in on our delicate relationship to the sea. Light, color, and form are crucial components. In this body of work he uses a gorgeous, slowly shifting color palette gleaned from changes in depth and tide, abstract patterns of waves and rippling water, and beaches both empty and cluttered. Throughout the series, Misrach carefully balances the minutiae of human gesture against the massive scale of the sea" (Aperture Foundation). "My thinking about this work was influenced by the events of 9/11, particularly by the images of individuals and couples falling from the World Trade Towers. Paradise has become an uneasy dwelling place; the sublime sea frames our vulnerability, and the precarious nature of life itself" (Richard Misrach). A "must-have" title for Richard Misrach collectors. <b><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in metallic-silver marker on the title page by Richard Misrach. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. Misrach signed very few copies of the book. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of few signed copies still available online, is still in the publisher&#39;s original cardboard box, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 38 color plates, 9 of which are doublespreads. One of the greatest living American photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER RICHARD MISRACH TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1597110485.

5 pp. Folio (355 x 280 mm.). Notated in pencil with additional markings in coloured ink. Signed and dated 2007. . Tsontakis studied with Hugo Weisgall, Felix Greissle and Roger Sessions. His honours include the Charles Ives Living Award, the Grawemeyer, two Kennedy Center Friedheim Awards (1989, 1992), a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1995), a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (1996) and numerous commissions. "[His] early works are written in a dissonant chromatic idiom not unlike that of Sessions. His musical language soon shifted, however, towards a classically-influenced style characterized by large-scale harmonic prolongations and what he calls 'the timeless gesture', a reference to the past through evocation rather than quotation. With the String Quartet no. 3 'Carragio' (1986) he arrived at an idiosyncratic tonal language propelled by a non-minimalist, Beethovenian use of repetition.
