        Mnemosyne

Scalo, Zurich, 2005 - Hardcover, quarto, 501pp., b&w and colour illustrations. Minimal wear to dustwrapper; professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Near fine. Mnemosyne accompanied an exhibition assembled by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. It is a sumptuous collection of 30 years of work by an artist whose images have been variously described as obsessive, provocative, unsettling, opulent, and luminous. The photographer's broad subject matter includes dark portraits that evoke the work of old master painters, shifting between intensely black shadows and glowing light; controversial nude studies of adolescent models; and landscape and cloudscape. His portraits and figure studies raise questions about identity and the various selves-public and private-that his subjects assume; some of the most fascinating photographs feature individuals isolated amid crowded city streets. As Edmund Capon writes, ' His images in the sheer potency of their intimations remind us of just how extraordinary and poetic the ordinary can be; of how familiar roads, suburbs, factories and people especially in the changing light of dusk and the dead of night, can become charged and powerfully intimate for Henson and for us. It is the opportunity of uncertain mystery and emotive fulfilment he evokes in his images that speaks to us above all else, for as he says, "the object in my work is not necessarily the subject".'

Programming a computer for playing chess" in The London, Edinburgh and Dublin Philosophical Magazine, 7th series, 41, 1950, pp. 256-275

FIRST EDITION OF "THE FIRST TECHNICAL PAPER ON COMPUTER CHESS" (Christies, Origins of Cyberspace Auction, 2005). Claude Shannon's seminal 1950 paper is considered "the foundation of computer chess" (Reilly, Milestones in Computer Science and Information Technology, 55). "The framework he introduced has guided most of the subsequent analysis of the problem" (Newell, Shaw, & Simon, 44).& & "Since the mid-1940s, scientists had aimed to create a thinking machine, an apparatus that could compete with or even surpass the human brain in logical operations, pattern recognition, problem solving and even language. Chess was found to be a useful testing ground because of its combination of simple rules and mind-bending complexity… Shannon was fascinated by chess' potential in the pursuit of what he called 'mechanized thinking.' But he became convinced that computer chess and other AI pursuits should not be modeled on human thought… Computers, at least as they were understood then, could calculate very quickly, following programmed instructions" (Shenk, 201, 211).& & Shannon believed that chess would be the ideal proving ground for this new type of intelligence. Believing that theoretically, "the game could be fully converted into one long mathematical formula," Shannon's paper was "concerned with the problem of constructing a computing routine or 'program' for a modern general purpose computer which will enable it to play chess" (Shannon; Shenk). It "was the first publication to describe how a position might be evaluated and how a game tree might be searched. The paper was the text of a lecture given by Shannon to the Institute of Radio Engineers on 9 March 1949) (Cooper & Leeuwen, Alan Turing, 644).& & This paper also includes an aside that came to be known as 'the Shannon number," the number of possible chess games that can be played. That number, also known as "the game tree complexity of chess," is based on Shannon's calculation on a logical approximation that each game has an average of 40 moves and each move a player chooses between 30 possible moves. That makes a total of 10120 possible games. This number is known as the number of Shannon.& & Shannon, an electrical engineer, was also known as "the father of information theory." CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor & Francis, Ltd. Ex-libris bearing only ghosting from the removal of a plate of the front flyleaf and faint stamps on the text block. There are no marks on the spine or title page. Full volume. 4to (10 x 7 inches; 250 x 175mm). 1299 pages. Illustration: In-text illustrations and plates throughout. Bound in red cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine. Slight scuffing and edge wear; slight fading at the spine. A large volume tightly and very solidly bound. Very small mark on the first page of the Shannon paper (see scan), otherwise bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

STCN (4 copies); cf. W. Los, Opvoeding tot mens en burger: pedagogiek als cultuurkritiek in Nederland in de 18e eeuw (2005). First edition of an influential, but now nearly forgotten, scientifically grounded monograph on the education of children by the Swiss philosopher and mathematician Jean-Pierre de Crousaz (1663-1750). This systematic work forms an important link between pedagogy in the 17th and in the 18th century. One of Crousaz's main principles is that virtue is the most important goal of education, because intellect without virtue is useless and dangerous. The book includes an exposition of the qualities of a good father, advice on how to give the first lessons, explanations on the methods to expand the knowledge of young children, the use of knowledge, how to teach geography, history and ethics, advice on instructing children in religion and develop their piety, the use of reason in matters of religion and morals, discussions about recreation and travel, etc. Both title-pages slightly foxed, binding a bit rubbed, primarily the spines, with the heads chipped. Very good copy.

        Everything That Rises Must Converge

New York. Limited Editions Club. 2005. Bound in full crimson cloth over boards. Gilt-titled grain morocco label inset to front cover. Encased in like covered Solander box with gilt-titled grain morocco label inset to spine. Elephant Folio. 17" x 22". This Edition Limited to 300 numbered copies of which this is #24. Signed by Benny Andrews to Colophon. Illustrated with six original colour etchings by Benny Andrews, hand printed on BFK Rives by Peter Pettengill Everything That Rises Must Converge is a collection of short stories written by Flannery O'Connor during her final illness. The title of the collection and of the short story is taken from a passage from the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. The collection was published posthumously in 1965.Just one year before her death in 1963, Flannery O’Connor won her second O. Henry Award for ‘‘Everything That Rises Must Converge,’’ a powerful depiction of a troubled mother-son relationship. In 1965 the story was published in her well-regarded short fiction collection, Everything That Rises Must Converge. Most critics view ‘‘Everything That Rises Must Converge’’ as a prime example of O’Connor’s literary and moral genius. The story exemplifies her ability to expose human weakness and explore important moral questions through everyday situations. Considered a classic of the short story form, ‘‘Everything That Rises Must Converge’’ has been anthologized frequently. The story describes the events surrounding a fateful bus trip that an arrogant young man takes with his bigoted mother. The mother insists on her son’s company because she doesn’t like to ride the bus alone, especially since the bus system was recently integrated. The tensions in their relationship come to a head when a black mother and son board the same bus.O’Connor utilizes biting irony to expose the blindness and ignorance of her characters. The story’s title refers to an underlying religious message that is central to her work: she aims to expose the sinful nature of humanity that often goes unrecognized in the modern, secular world. A Very Fine, Pristine, apparently unread copy. Near Fine+ Box presents very mild sunning to top edge of front panel, small bump to fore-edge and two corners and a small, benign patch of darkening to upper rear panel. A Very Rare and important LEC issue.

Said to be the last American pirate, Don Pedro Gilbert (ca. 1800-1834) was born in South America and made his home in south Florida. A former privateer in the service of the Colombian government, Gilbert began raiding American merchant vessels off the east coast of Florida in early 1832. Later that year, his men stole roughly $20,000 worth of silver from the Mexican, en route from Salem to Rio de Janeiro. The crew surrendered, but on Gilbert's orders his men locked them below deck and left them to burn alive. The captain managed to free himself and his men who eventually reached Salem. The British Navy captured Gilbert's ship and crew in 1833 and all thirteen were convicted and hanged in Boston in 1834. Some spotting. Good copy.

Small 8vo in 12s (15 x 10 cm). Modern red sheepskin, glazed, each board with a gold and blind-stamped border, spine title in gold.

Anuario de estudios Bolivianos, 13 (2005), p. 680; Parke-Bernet 12 March 1968 (Carbone auction), lot 2664 (this copy); cf. A. Costa de la Torre, Cat. bibl. Bolivianos 1900-1963 (1968), p. 37; not in KVK & WorldCat; Medina; Palau. An extremely rare "Novena" prayer book perhaps first compiled in 1714, when the city of La Paz in Bolivia (after surviving an earthquake) made Christ its patron and erected an image under the name "Señor de las Piedades". After a preliminary note on the events of 1714 (pp. 3-4) the book gives orations and prayers for each of the nine days of the Novena. We have located neither another copy of the present Argentine edition nor an earlier edition of the same text, but the title-page indicates that an earlier edition existed. The prayers for the nine days are followed by a closing note with additional prayers, which includes a reference to another book: Juan Gabriel de Contreras, Despertador eucarístico, Madrid, 1786, which is known in the literature. The italic type used for the preliminary note and a few headings was cut by Antonio Espinosa in Madrid, famous for the (slightly different) italic he made for Ibarra's 1772 Salust. Updike, Printing types, figs. 242 and 243, shows italics matching the present one in style but in a larger and smaller size in Espinosa's 1771 type specimen, noting (p. 81) the "extraordinary quality of pen-work. ... they are among the most thoroughly calligraphic characters to be found in any existing specimen". The use of this type in Argentina 28 years later is noteworthy. With the bookplate and stamp of Oscar E. Carbone (d. ca. 1967). The binder has trimmed the margins, just touching the text on 1 page, but without loss, and there is a stain on the title-page, but the book is in very good condition. The binding has some tears and chips to the spine and corners, but is still good. An extremely rare Argentine edition of a Bolivian prayerbook.
