        The Essential John Nash.

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2003. First edition of this volume that brings together Nash's most well-known papers. Octavo, original black cloth. Signed by John Nash on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. When John Nash was awarded the Nobel prize in economics in 1994, many people were surprised to learn that he was alive and well. Since then, Sylvia Nasar's celebrated biography A Beautiful Mind, has revealed the man. The Essential John Nash reveals his work--in his own words. This book presents, for the first time, the full range of Nash's diverse contributions not only to game theory, for which he received the Nobel, but to pure mathematics--from Riemannian geometry and partial differential equations--in which he commands even greater acclaim among academics. Included are nine of Nash's most influential papers, most of them written over the decade beginning in 1949. "Why are we so intrigued by the story of John Nash? We are curious to understand a person who proves theorems we are unable to fathom. We imagine the voices from another world he has heard. We ask where he was for 30 years during which he walked among us but wasn't here. We are frightened and we are attracted by this combination of 'crazy' and 'genius', an invitation for visiting the edge of our own minds." (Ariel Rubinstein)

Slave-catching in the Indian Ocean: a record of naval experiences.London, Longmans, Green & Co. (colophon: printed by Spottiswoode & Co.), 1873. 8vo. With 8 steel-engraved illustration plates including the frontispiece, and a folding map of the Indian Ocean, Red Sea and the Gulf, hand-coloured in outline. Original publisher's cloth, spine with gold-tooled title.

Garrick, "Indian Ocean, post-exploration", in: Speake, Literature of travel and exploration (2003), pp. 608-610; WorldCat (4 copies); Zeitschrift für Ethnology V (1873), p. 117. First edition of a very detailed and well-illustrated account of a British naval campaign to suppress the East African slave trade in the years 1868 to 1870, published only eight year after the end of the United States' Civil War and the abolition of slavery there. Slavery was not outlawed in the Ottoman Empire until 1882 and in Iran and most of the Gulf States not until the 20th century. The illustrations show the author's ship Dryad and some of the slave ships, individual and group portraits of slaves encountered during the campaign and views of ports where slave trading occurred. The first chapter relates Colomb's voyage to Aden, where he took command of the Dryad, and the next two chapters give extensive background information to put the account of the campaign in its proper context. Colomb's account of his own campaign includes chapters on individual regions and on topics (slaves on board ship, the slave market, etc.).

Acts. Dedicated to Bloom. Tableaux after James Joyce's Ulysses

St. Petersburg: M.K. Publishers, 2003. One of 12 copies. No. 4 of 12 copies signed by the artist. 15 coloured lithographs by Mikhail Karasik, 3 leaves printed with title, text and table of contents. 514 x 340 mms, loose as issued in printed box, housed in a card chemise and cloth sided card slipcase. As new. Based on a scene in Ulysses, Karasik writes: "Bloom takes a pack of postcards from the bureau. He studies his collection of pornographic postcards. He probably remembers when he was a boy. In the evening, on the seashore, he watched a girl in white stockings sitting across from him. She slowly parted her legs and he saw her white knickers and straps. Life passes so quickly. All that remains are a few smudged pictures. Yet for some reason these pictures - the silliest, naive, useless ones - always seem the most important". Karasik has made a series of erotic lithographs based on vintage postcards.

As New (from Friedlander's personal archive). From Nazraeli Press: "The Staglieno cemetery near Genoa was created in the 19th century. It is home not only to those whose bones lie buried beneath, but also to the splendidly ornate display of sculptures erected in their memory. Carved from inanimate lumps of stone, these memorials have become more than the monumental tributes they were originally commissioned to be. Now feathered with a gentle coat of dust, each appears to have taken on a life of its own and out of the melancholy of death comes the comforting notion of a presence that will remain. This series of photographs by the inestimable Lee Friedlander will certainly delight with its beauty; it may also surprise with its warmth, and its sense of immortality." Signed by the Artist.         The Slavery Debates, 1952-1990. A Retospective.

Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 2003 - Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in red, grey endpapers. With the dust jacket. A fine copy in the bright jacket. First edition, first impression. Signed by the author on the half-title. During this period, a fierce debate raged in the US concerning the interpretation of the slavery era, partly ignited by Fogel and Engerman's 1974 publication, Time on the Cross, in which they concluded that slavery was a profitable and efficient labour system, with benefits for some African-Americans in the antebellum period, and led to condemnation and accusations of racism. Here, Fogel offers a conclusion to his work on the subject, and also offers a "personal, retrospective meditation" (p. ix). [Attributes: First Edition]

Los Fusilamientos / The Firing Squad Drawings by William Roberts / Translated by Miguel and Nancy Gil

Aurora, New York:: Wells College Press,, 2003.. Edition of 30. 15 x 20"; 10 leaves. Drawings printed from photopolymer plates. Text printed letterpress with Monotype Centaur and Arrighi typefaces. Text and drawings printed on Arches Cover by Terrence Chouinard and Sarah Roberts. Laid in red silk cloth-covered clamshell portfolio case. Includes signed original drawing by William Roberts. Binding and production assistance by Katie Baldwin, Ilana Houseknecht, Roberto Silva, Jenna Rodriguez, and Richard Kegler. Text in Spanish and English. Signed by the poet on the colophon. Wells College Press: "Noted Spanish poet Ildefonso-Manuel Gil (1912-2003) wrote this powerful anti-war poem based on Goya's painting: El 3 de mayo de 1808 en Madrid: los fusilamientos en la montaña del Príncipe Pío (The Firing Squad of May 3, 1808). The project was started in 2001 and completed in fall of 2014. This monumental portfolio includes a suite of lithographs by Wells' Professor Emeritus William Roberts featuring portraits of both the poet and Goya, as well as Roberts' reactions to Goya's painting. "The project was initiated by Terrence Chouinard while director of the Wells Book Arts Center between 2001-2005. Four lithographs drawn by Roberts were printed by Gregory Page in 2011 at Olive Branch Press in Ithaca, New York. The author signed the then-printed colophon page in 2003 before final production details were completed." Introduction: "In 'The Firing Squad of May 3,' that shocking Goya painting bound so exactly to a date, the historical event is erased, and the painting acquires a timeless significance: what we see is the condemnation of violence, of death used as a gag to silence the voice of dignity. … "Violence is not limited to time or space, to color of skin, to social class, to political or religious ideology. It is not born from injustice but engenders it. Basically human, it is the worst enemy of humanity.
