Sundrie Pieces [NUMBER X OF XV SPECIAL BINDING COPIES]; A new selection of George Herbert's poetry, with samples of his prose

Newton, Powys, Wales: Gwasg Gregynog, 2003. Limited Edition. Leather. Fine. Van Niekerk, Sarah. Number X of XV copies in special binding (total edition 215), quarto size, 127 pp., signed by binder Julian Thomas, with a suite of signed and numbered prints by Sarah Van Niekerk. George Herbert (1593-1633), Welsh-born although raised primarily in England, began life as a poliltician, eventually becoming a priest within the Anglican Church. It was while he was rector at a small parish within Salisbury that he worked on revisions to his poetry; "The Temple" was published in 1633, the same year he succumbed to consumption three years after his ordination to the priesthood, at the very young age of 39. This work is new selection of not only George Herbert's poetry, but some of his lesser-known prose work, as well as, running along the top and bottom of each page, over 200 of his proverbs. Embellished with wood-engravings by Sarah Van Niekerk, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, a Royal West of England Academician, a member of the Society of Wood Engravers (Chairman 1995-98) and an Honorary Member of The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Ms. Van Niekerk is the recipient of numerous awards and her work is in both private collections and public museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the London Institute, UCLA, and the Ashmoleon Museum to name just a few. This work in a special binding by Julian Thomas, a wrap-around design incorporation a cross with gilt rays emanating out from it, set against a rual backdrop such as the parish George Herbert served in as rector. Mr. Thomas was taught bookbinding by the late John Ewart Bowen, who himself was apprenticed to George Fisher in the bindery of the original Gregynog Press. A Fellow of Designer Bookbinders and its President the year this book was published, Julian Thomas' bindings are found in many of the world's major public and private collections. A sumptuous presentation of the mind and works of a perhaps lesser-known but highly influential poet and thinker.___DESCRIPTION: Original half cordovan morocco cut in the shape of a cross spanning the breadth of both boards with gilt rays coming from the centre of the cross, calfskin colored with acrylic ink to depict a warm landscape, gilt lettering to backstrip, top-edge ochre, ochre endpapers, title page in black and purple, proverbs all in purple, wood engraved frontisportrait and numerous wood engravings in text; Monotype Bell and Palace Script type, T.         Study of Two Pears / Etude de deux poires [ARTIST BOOK - Judith Rothchild]; A Poem by Wallace Stevens with a translation into French by Bernard Noel and mezzotints by Judith Rothchild

Verdigris Press, Octon 2003 - Number 10 of 50 copies, quarto size, [20] pp., signed by Judith Rothchild and the printer Mark Lintott. Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) was "one of America's most respected poets. He was a master stylist, employing an extraordinary vocabulary and a rigorous precision in crafting his poems. But he was also a philosopher of aesthetics, vigorously exploring the notion of poetry as the supreme fusion of the creative imagination and objective reality." (N.B., from the web site of the Poetry Foundation.) "Study of Two Pears" was first published in 1954 in The Collected Poems of Wallace Stevens, and is here translated into French by Bernard Noel. The title asserts itself as being concerned with visual arts, and each stanza tugs at the tension between reality that is observed and imaginative reality, the observer sees the pears but not as he wills, language fails to adequately describe them as they are without the use of metaphor. There might be no more appropriate poem to illustrate than this, as the speaker's desire to describe the pears without relating them to anything else is an act of reduction which ultimately expands the image by showing us the many things they do resemble. Illustrated by Rothchild's velvety, hyper-realistic mezzotints which follow the progress of the stanzas, each print gradually growing brighter, the pears illustrated from every possible angle, becoming more definite and resolved along with the poem.___DESCRIPTION: Original wrappers screen-printed with a design of green, brown and orange, with the title letterpress printed to the backstrip and upper wrapper in dark green, loose leporello, deckled fore-edge, nine mezzotints, two blind-stamped sets of pears to fly-leaves, text in English and French; handset type, Hahnemuhle paper, quarto size (11" by 11.75"), unpaginated with [20] pp., limited edition, this number 10 of 50 copies, signed by printer Mark Lintott and Judith Rothchild. Housed in a heavy cardboard slipcase covered in green paper and similarly screen-printed in shades of green, lined with plain green paper.___CONDITION: Fine; crisp, clean; other than a hint of rubbing to the top corners, as new, and free of prior owner markings; in a like case.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Slave-catching in the Indian Ocean: a record of naval experiences.London, Longmans, Green and Co. (colophon: printed by Spottiswoode & Co.), 1873. 8vo. With 8 steel-engraved illustration plates including the frontispiece (the 5 signed ones engraved by Pearson), a folding map of the Indian Ocean, Red Sea and the Gulf, hand-coloured in outline (lithographed by Edward Weller), and one line of music notes in the text. Contemporary dark half calf (rebacked).

      - Garrick, "Indian Ocean, post-exploration", in: Speake, Literature of travel and exploration (2003), pp. 608-610; WorldCat (4 copies); Zeitschrift für Ethnology V (1873), p. 117. First edition of a very detailed and well-illustrated account of a British naval campaign to suppress the East African slave trade in the years 1868 to 1870, published only eight years after the end of the United States' Civil War and the abolition of slavery there. Slavery was not outlawed in the Ottoman Empire (which at the time of publication included Egypt and what is now Iraq) until 1882 and in Iran and most of the Gulf States not until the 20th century. The book was written by Captain Philip Howard Colomb (1831-1899), Commander of the HMS Dryad from 1868 to 1870, who lead the campaign. He operated primarily in and around the Gulf, Oman and Zanzibar, and captured seven slave ships during those two years. The illustrations show the Dryad and some of the slave ships, individual and group portraits of slaves encountered during the campaign and views of ports where slave trading occurred.Slightly browned with a few stainds. Binding rebacked and slightly worn along the extremities, mostly the corners, bookblock detached from binding at front hinge. Overall in very good condition.
