The House I Once Called Home, A Photographic Memoir With Verse (Deluxe version)

[London]: [Enitharmon Editions Ltd, 2003], 2003. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Michals, Duane. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 56 pp. Signed by Artist. No. 10 of 50 deluxe versions, there were also 15 hors commerce copies, with the regular edition being 3000; the deluxe version is limited to 50 copies, numbered and signed by the artist. It is accompanied by his first ever original print, a delicately nuanced photogravure made from one of the most haunting images in the sequence: this too is numbered and signed. Duane Michals (b. 1932, in McKeesport, PA) is one of the great photographic innovators of the last century, widely known for his work with series, multiple exposures, and text. Michals first made significant, creative strides in the field of photography during the 1960s. In an era heavily influenced by photojournalism, Michals manipulated the medium to communicate narratives. The sequences, for which he is widely known, appropriate cinema's frame-by-frame format. Michals has also incorporated text as a key component in his works, but rather than serving a didactic or explanatory function, his handwritten text adds another dimension to the images' meaning and gives voice to Michals' singular musings which are poetic, tragic, and humorous, often all at once. Mr. Michals was seventy when, soon after the death of his mother, he returned to his native Pittsburgh to revisit the house in which he was born and brought up. Its deteriorated state proved a poignant focus for his memories, prompting reveries on mortality and the succession of generations that found form as a sequence of photographs and poetic texts. For any of us who have lost the older generations of our families and have pondered the transient nature of life, this volume will touch deep chords and enable us to examine our own feelings of loss and lives lived with all of life's complexities. (N.B., the above info from the web sites of the Press and of DC Art Gallery.) ***DESCRIPTION: Decorated paper boards with paper label inset on the front, black lettering on the spine, decorative endpapers, photographic sequences interspersed through the book with corresponding text, some typeset and some hand-written; quarto size (approximately 10.5" tall), unpaginated with 28 leaves total. The separate photogravure is also signed/numbered by the artist, tissue-guarded, and enclosed in a black cardstock wallet; the slipcase is covered in navy blue cloth. ***CONDITION: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the accompanying print and its folder are also fine, as is the slipcase. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Megilat Esther (Scroll of Esther) [SIGNED]

Jerusalem: Avner Moriah. Limited edition. Scroll. fine. 1/180. The work is a scroll, measuring a total of 10.5x1.5', rolled up and housed in an oblong lidded decorative box. The box measures 6.5x 6.5x 20.5", in brown-beige and red leather, decorated with gilt-stamped lettering, illustrations, tooling and motifs. Interior of the box in red leather with addition decorative motifs in gilt. The scroll is #23 of a limited number 180 copies, hand-numbered and signed by the artist in pencil in the margin on the left edge, at the end of the scroll. This digital printing (printed on a Epson 9900) lavishly reproduces the original vibrant work of artist Avner Moriah in illustrating the biblical Book of Esther in stunning detail. This is the largest of three different versions of the scroll he painted between 2003 and 2005. The scroll, starting from right to left, following the Hebrew tradition, begins with a section of small amusing vignettes, displaying the central characters and other groups of people in the story, and acts as a sort of key for identifying the main forces and players within the Esther story. Block sections from the text of the scroll are reproduced in lovely calligraphy by Izzy Pludwinsky, and are surrounded and enveloped by the illustrations, creating a sense of unity between the text and the artwork. Moriah's work here, contains deep and bold hues of blues, oranges and reds, giving a sense of dynamic life, vibrancy and sensuality to the paintings with great contrasts in light and shadowed sections. The cityscapes and interiors inhabited by the characters, display detailed and ornate Islamic, and middle-eastern style geometrical patterns, motifs and architecture giving a real sense of time and place. The artist constantly plays with the viewer's perspective, with central characters oriented directly or indirectly facing the viewer giving a sense of immediacy. Interiors and landscapes stretch off away from the viewer into distant horizons which flow into expressive backgrounds, depicting castles, mountains, rugged cliffs, clouds, night skies and fire. The content of the text is rendered in simple scenes that get directly to the heart of the action, and easily convey meaning. Text in Hebrew. Scroll and box in overall fine condition.

Slave-catching in the Indian Ocean: a record of naval experiences.London, Longmans, Green and Co. (colophon: printed by Spottiswoode & Co.), 1873. 8vo. With 8 steel-engraved illustration plates including the frontispiece (the 5 signed ones engraved by Pearson), a folding map of the Indian Ocean, Red Sea and the Gulf, hand-coloured in outline (lithographed by Edward Weller), and one line of music notes in the text. Contemporary dark half calf (rebacked).

Garrick, "Indian Ocean, post-exploration", in: Speake, Literature of travel and exploration (2003), pp. 608-610; WorldCat (4 copies); Zeitschrift für Ethnology V (1873), p. 117. First edition of a very detailed and well-illustrated account of a British naval campaign to suppress the East African slave trade in the years 1868 to 1870, published only eight years after the end of the United States' Civil War and the abolition of slavery there. Slavery was not outlawed in the Ottoman Empire (which at the time of publication included Egypt and what is now Iraq) until 1882 and in Iran and most of the Gulf States not until the 20th century. The book was written by Captain Philip Howard Colomb (1831-1899), Commander of the HMS Dryad from 1868 to 1870, who lead the campaign. He operated primarily in and around the Gulf, Oman and Zanzibar, and captured seven slave ships during those two years. The illustrations show the Dryad and some of the slave ships, individual and group portraits of slaves encountered during the campaign and views of ports where slave trading occurred.Slightly browned with a few stainds. Binding rebacked and slightly worn along the extremities, mostly the corners, bookblock detached from binding at front hinge. Overall in very good condition.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Bloomsbury, London 2003 - First edition of the fifth novel in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series. Octavo, original illustrated boards. Signed by J.K. Rowling on an official Bloomsbury Children's Book's bookplate, attached to the front free endpaper. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket illustration by Jason Cockcroft. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, more than any of the four previous novels in the series, is a coming-of-age story. Harry faces the thorny transition into adulthood, when adult heroes are revealed to be fallible, and matters that seemed black-and-white suddenly come out in shades of gray. Gone is the wide-eyed innocent, the whiz kid of Sorcerer's Stone. Here we have an adolescent who's sometimes sullen, often confused, and always self-questioning. Confronting death again, as well as a startling prophecy, Harry ends his year at Hogwarts exhausted and pensive. "The Order of the Phoenix starts slow, gathers speed and then skateboards, with somersaults, to its furious conclusion. As Harry gets older, Rowling gets better." (John Leonard, The New York Times). It was made into the 2007 film directed by David Yates, starring Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, alongside Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as Harry's best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.         Seven Pillars of Wisdom: a triumph, the complete 1922 'Oxford' text, first and limited one-volume edition, the first of 180 copies issued thus in quarter Nigerian goatskin

Castle Hill Press, Salisbury, England 2003 - This is the finely bound, first one-volume limited edition of the full 1922 'Oxford' text from Castle Hill Press, the premier editors and fine press publishers of material by and about T. E. Lawrence, founded by Lawrence’s official biographer, Jeremy Wilson (1944-2017). Of 1,225 total copies, the publisher issued just 180 thus, in quarter Nigerian goatskin, bound by The Fine Bindery and featuring raised spine bands, blind rule compartments and transitions, cloth sides, top edge gilt, ribbon place marker, brown endpapers with adjacent illustrated maps, and head and tail bands and issued in a rigid, cloth slipcase. Quarter goatskin copies were numbered 46-225. This is the first of these, hand-numbered "46" by the publisher on the title page verso limitation. We acquired this copy in flawless, as-new condition directly from Castle Hill Press. This beautiful first one-volume edition features text that was "re-checked against copies of the two source documents" leading to "a number of small improvements from the preceding 1997 edition." This edition also added a scholarly index by Hazel K. Bell (which won the Weatley Medal, Britain’s major indexing award), as well as 16 pages of black-and-white photographs taken by Lawrence and others during the Arab Revolt. Seven Pillars is the story of Thomas Edward Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity, which he spent the rest of his short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence famously resisted broad publication of the full version of Seven Pillars during his lifetime. When Lawrence died in 1935 following a motorcycle crash, his masterwork was rushed into print in the only version readily available - the 1926 "Subscribers" abridgement. Few realize that the text released to the world as "Complete and Unabridged" in 1935 and which has become so celebrated is, in fact, a significantly abridged version. Even more remarkable, the full 1922 "Oxford Text" – a third longer – was not published until 1997, with the text in a two-volume edition, followed by this one-volume limited edition in 2003. Castle Hill Press, headed by Lawrence’s official biographer, Jeremy Wilson, took this text from the manuscript in the Bodleian Library and T. E. Lawrence's annotated copy of the 1922 Oxford Times printing. Beyond the more subjective questions of literature, in terms of both autobiography and history, "the 1922 text is, without question, superior to that of 1926. In the process of ‘literary’ abridgement, Lawrence cut out numerous personal reflections, some of which were important." For example, the 1926 text excised Lawrence’s "confession that the flogging at Deraa left him with a masochistic longing and his recollection of this event a few weeks later when he was present at Allenby’s official entry into Jerusalem. The historical record, likewise, often fell victim to abridgement because of the cuts, [the narrative] does not always account for Lawrence’s time or seem to square with independent records. Worse still, the frustrations and abandoned plans of 1917-18 were largely suppressed in the 1926 text " Bibliographic reference: see O'Brien A034a.

Excerpts from The Diaries of Adam & Eve (Artist Book - Charles Hobson)

[San Francisco]: Pacific Editions, 2003. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Hobson, Charles. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall Signed by Book Designer. Limited edition of 38 copies, this being no. 35. Charles Hobson, book artist extraordinaire, has brought together a perfectly lovely tale of love by Mark Twain, personified with images of a running man and woman based on the human motion studies by Eadweard Muybridge made in 1901. Twain wrote two separate stories, "Extracts for Adam's Diary" and later "Eve's Diary", with much of the sentiment of the two for each other derived from the deep love he and his wife, Livy, shared throughout their lives. The French Door design of the binding of this book enables the reader to compare Adam's and Eve's "diaries" while the two figures race towards each other. ***DESCRIPTION: Made as a limited edition of 38 copies; 13 x 5 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches, 46 pages, signed by Charles Hobson on the colophon page, the pages contained within a traditional book-style binding of paper decorated with red apples and green concentric circles on a black background, black cloth spine with gilt lettering, publisher's matching slipcase covered in grey cloth with a front pastedown of a small piece of decorate paper matching the boards. The diaries have been published here in a French door style of binding with a concertina fold which allow each diary to be read as single, integral work while at the same time allowing passages from each to be easily compared; the concertina also provides a place to print the verses from Genesis that were Twain's source and, on the inside fold, the handwriting of Twain and his wife, Livy. Adam and Eve draw closer to one another and ultimately embrace. This movement toward an embrace has been given a visual counterpoint by use of the running figures based on the photographs of Eadweard Muybridge published in 1901. Each page of the diaries contains a folded and collaged image and a scrap of the handwriting of Mark Twain and Livy from letters they exchanged during a two year period when doctors forbade Twain to see Livy in her sickroom. The final drawings have been made as monotypes with pastel and have been printed as digital pigment prints. The prints have been cut out so that they can be opened across one another to overlap and to form a visual embrace. A separate print made as a composite of the last images in the book has been folded into an accordion and included in a pocket at the back of the book, this print is also signed by Charles Hobson. It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War, and the Great Fire of London. Pepys, Samuel - The Diary of Samuel Pepys Limited Edition (Published in by The Folio Society in 2003. 11 Quarter-Leather Hardbacks in original slipcases. Acclaimed by The Times as 'one of the glories of contemporary English publishing' and by Sir Arthur Bryant as 'complete perfection', the Latham and Matthews edition remains the authoritative text and provides the source for this magnificent Folio Society publication. Limited to 1,000 copies. THREE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, on 16 May 1703, at exactly fortythree minutes past three in the morning by his own most reliable watch, Samuel Pepys died. The son of a London tailor, Pepys had risen to become one of the most important men in the Kingdom - the First Secretary to the Admiralty and President of the Royal Society. He was, according to John Evelyn, his friend of nearly forty years, 'a very worthy, industrious and curious person ... Universally beloved, hospitable, generous, learned in many things, skilled in music, a very great cherisher of learned men ...' Yet these great achievements might have merited only passing references in the history books had it not been for his Diary - an extraordinary, marvellous, racy and unique document, covering ten years of his life, which no one, not even his wife, knew he was writing. The Diary of Samuel Pepys is without doubt the most famous diary in the English language. Yet for over a century, the manuscripts in their secretive shorthand lay unopened in a Cambridge college library and for another century they remained unpublished. Astonishingly it was not until 1971 that the entire diary appeared. The life's work of Professor William Matthews and Robert Latham, it had taken over thirty years to finish and it took the reading public by storm. The true extent of the phenomenon that was Pepys's Diary was revealed at last. A comprehensive Index and a Companion volume were added - invaluable books designed to accompany modern readers on their journey through Pepys's world. To present the Diary in a binding worthy of its status and to retain a strong 17th-century flavour, quarter leather with hand-marbled sides was chosen - the design for the marbling being devised by Ann Muir exclusively for this edition. The type on the spines is by William Caslon, the first of the great English type founders. For the edge-gilding a maroon wash has been applied over the gold to produce an enriched patina. The eleven volumes are presented in individual slipcases. .
