He went back day after day, standing on sidewalks, knocking on doors, asking permission to photograph a face, a child, a room, a family. Through his skill, his extraordinary vision, and his deep respect for his subjects, Davidson's portraits of the people of East 100th Street is a powerful statement of the dignity and humanity that is in all people" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" edition for Bruce Davidson collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Bruce Davidson. REGARDING THE PAIN OF OTHERS

New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2003. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2003. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 126 pages. The author's book-length essay on subject and last book. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Susan Sontag's last book, a brilliant and provocative meditation on war photography. A sequel-of-sorts to her classic, "On Photography" (1977), Sontag revisits some of the very same issues she raised in her earlier book and subjects them to renewed, closer scrutiny. A relatively short book, it is very intense and passionate, but ranges nimbly across a breadth of cultural and intellectual references. She re-evaluates what photography can do to create awareness, arouse indignation and sympathy, and make people act on the basis of photographs (rather than narrative accounts) of other people's suffering. Her key reference points are Virginia Woolf's classic book, "Three Guineas", and her own book. Virginia Woolf famously argued that men and women can never have a meeting of minds about the subject of war because men make war, women do not. Sontag eviscerates Woolf's thesis and then, without missing a beat, turns to her own book and eviscerates many of its positions too, for being insensitive, incomplete, and in many respects, simply wrong-headed. Her tough-minded re-evaluation of Woolf and her own book is something both critics and admirers of Susan Sontag have come to expect from her. She was the intellectual par excellence, who never hesitated to re-examine her positions, ask questions, and change her mind. Were it not for her formidable intellect, her agonizing self-examination would be merely interesting. A "must-have" title for Susan Sontag collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Susan Sontag. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Most copies available online have major flaws or are subsequent printings. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the MacArthur Genius Grant, the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977 for "On Photography", the National Book Award in 2000 for "In America", and the Jerusalem Prize in 2001. Shimon Peres, in awarding the Jerusalem Prize, described Sontag as "one of the world's finest writers and greatest minds". One of the most influential and important American writer-intellectuals of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SUSAN SONTAG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374248583.

Infos Internet [Attributes: First Edition]

Study of Two Pears / Etude de deux poires. A Poem by Wallace Stevens with a translation into French by Bernard Noel and mezzotints by Judith Rothchild

Octon, France: Verdigris Press. 2003. One of 44 copies from a total issue of 50, all on Hahnemuhle paper, each copy signed in pencil by the artist, Judith Rothchild, and the printer, Mark Lintott, and hand-numbered in pencil; the 6 deluxe copies with an original copper plate and housed in custom-made clamshell box by Mark Lintott. 20pp; page size: 11 x 11-13/16". Bound: leporello loose in original wrappers that are green, brown, and gold screen-printed paper by Judith Rothchild, the title printed in dark green in French and English on the front and in dark brown on the brown spine, housed in publisher's slipcase of the same screen-printed paper by Rothchild. Judith Rothchild's mezzotints are extraordinarily beautiful with 9 separate plates (including title page) of single and double pears. There are pears blind engraved on the white spaces of the pages. The text is hand-set letterpress and was printed on an 1867 Albion press by Mark Lintott with Wallace Stevens' English verse in black and Bernard Noel's French translation following it in brown. Judith Rothchild's affinity for objects from the natural world - pomegranates, figs, grapevines - is confirmed in this splendid edition of Wallace Stevens' verse. It is about as lovely a book as I've seen - the velvety mezzotints infusing a mystery and wonder for the miracle of this fruit so taken for granted. Rothchild's sculptural pears are indeed what Stevens' meant when he wrote, "Opusculum paedagogum. / The pears are not viols, / Nudes or bottles. They resemble nothing else."
See an Image.
DON VAN VLIET: RIDING SOME KIND OF UNUSUAL SKULL SLEIGH - DELUXE SLIPCASED EDITION WITH A SIGNED ETCHING

(VAN VLIET, DON aka CAPTAIN BEEFHEART) (CORBIJN, ANTON). Van Vliet, Don, Jan Van Vliet, Anton Corbijn & Ben Watson. DON VAN VLIET: RIDING SOME KIND OF UNUSUAL SKULL SLEIGH - DELUXE SLIPCASED EDITION WITH A SIGNED ETCHING. Signed by the Artist - with an Etching. Los Angeles: Artist Ink Editions, 2003. First Edition 1/1500 Deluxe. 4to. Linen Over Boards, Slipcased. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jackets - As Issued. 88 + 96pp, 1 audio CD + 1 DVD, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Tim Eames. "Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart was a visual artist before he was a musician. As a young child he drew serious accolades for his animal sculptures and was offered a scholarship to study in Europe. His parents declined; and while continuing to create in the visual medium, he turned his attention to music, within ten years forming the first incarnation of the legendary experimental outfit Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. The following fifteen years are music history. But in 1983 Van Vliet retired from music to pursue painting and drawing, the focus of this extraordinary boxed set. "Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (named after a painting the artist completed in 1987) provides an opportunity to own one of his original, signed color etchings. Executed on paper and cataloged as "Untitled (Self-Portrait)", the work measures 6 5/8 x 9 1/2". The paper itself measures 7 7/8 x 10 1/2". Van Vliet produced only 1,500 copies of the piece, one for each individually numbered copy of this Artist Ink Edition. A deluxe 9 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 2 3/4" slipcase carefully houses the etching as well as two museum-quality books, a CD, and a DVD. The first book, entitled "Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (88 pages), is a monograph of sorts, containing an essay by art historian Ben Watson and full-color reproductions of sixty of Van Vliet's paintings and drawings - some of them previously unpublished. The second book, entitled "Splinters" (96 pages), features portrait photos of the artist by Anton Corbijn, along with a selection of personal archival material supplied by Don and Jan Van Vliet - including family snapshots, newspaper clippings, drawings, and sketches. None of this material has heretofore been seen. The CD features the artist reading eleven of his previously unreleased spoken-word pieces spanning 1977-1999, which are also reprinted in the Splinters book. The DVD features "Some YoYo Stuff", a 1994 filmed observation by Anton Corbijn. "Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh is available only as an individually numbered limited edition of 1,500 copies". A pristine example of this remarkable package, now out of print, still sealed in the publisher's original shipping carton. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 0-7379-0284-1 Inventory Number: 019162&

Fragments of Light 2. Concept and Design by Kelly Driscoll. Translated by Zahra Partovi

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company. 2003. One of 35 copies, each copy consisting of 7 plates of Depp Glass, each plate with a laser etch of the English translation of the verse of thirteenth-century Sufi philosopher and poet, Rumi. There is, as well, a laser etch of the original Persian verse. Laser etching accomplished by Laser Edge Designs. Each plate of glass is 6-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches. The concept and design for this book sculpture is by Kelly Driscoll. The type for the English translation is Diotima. The calligraphy is by Jerry Kelly. The printed colophon is by Wild Carrot Letterpress. Housed in a pale sea- green suede box with fall-down sides and held together by magnets imbedded in the box sides, fine. This is an extraordinarily beautiful book with the laser etch on each tablet visible through to the bottom from the top. The subtlety of the designs created by this assemblage is breathtaking, and the play of light through the glass captivating. Of course, the idea of a pre-codex text being made available in a contemporary pre-codex form seems miraculously simple; rather it is simply miraculous. Known for publishing the finest of contemporary artist's books, Vincent FitzGerald & Co., has once again created a thing of intriguing beauty& One of the central figures of Islamic culture, Rumi (1207-1273) only recently began to emerge as a poet of significance to Westerners. Zahra Partovi, the translator, who now teaches the poetry of Rumi at The New School for Social Research, is widely acknowledged as one of the leading interpreters of his work for English-speaking readers. She has collaborated with Vincent FitzGerald on 6 previous limited editions of Rumi's work. Her own words on the significance of Rumi's poetry explain her work. "...the most remarkable biographical information about Jalaluddin Rumi's life is not the appearance and disappearance of the mystic Shams, but Rumi's imperative and conscious decision to make a change in his career from a Sufi teacher to a poet. Here the medium is truly the message: the most successful Sufi teacher of all times with countless devoted followers chooses to communicate through the path of poetry. This masterful poet combines philosophy, mysticism, and psychology in a language so piercing as to enter the realm of music. It is this element more than any other which has made Rumi's poetry so irresistible to readers for over seven hundred years.
See an Image.
298 pages. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 1/4") issued in green cloth with dark green lettering to cover and spine. (First's January 2003 pg 45) First American edition. The Luck of the Bodkins first published in the United Kingdom on October 11, 1935 by Herbert Jenkins, and in the United States on January 3, 1936 by Little, Brown and Company. The two editions are significantly different, though the plot remains the same. The novel was serialised in Passing Show magazine (UK) from 21 September to 23 November 1935, and this version was published as the UK edition. For its US magazine appearance, in the Red Book, between August 1935 and January 1936, Wodehouse re-wrote the story, reducing its length, and this became the US book edition. The story concerns the complicated love life of amiable young Drone Monty Bodkin, the nephew of Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe, who had previously appeared in Heavy Weather (1933), when he was employed as the latest in the long line of Lord Emsworth's secretaries. The plot of The Luck of the Bodkins continues into Pearls, Girls and Monty Bodkin (1972), in which Monty, the object of his affections, hockey-playing Gertrude Butterwick, and movie-mogul Ivor Llewellyn all return.Condition:Some light foxing to fore edge pages, points lightly rubbed. A TRIBUTE TO CAVAFY [SIGNED 2003]

Limited Editions Club. Fine with no dust jacket. 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. 14 x 18.5"; A Tribute to Cavafy: A Selection of Poems with Photogravures by Duane Michals and Translations by Edmund Keeley & Philip Sherrard. Limited edition of this collection of poetry by the Greek poet Cavafy, signed by American photographer Duane Michals on the limitation page. This is number 228 of 300. This elephant folio is bound in purple cloth with slight fading. Inset black leather label with stamped white lettering on front cover. Volume is in excellent condition. This book contains Cavafy"s original Greek printed interlinearly with the English translation with the text set in rare metal types and the pages printed by hand on Arches vellum. Illustrated with photogravures by Duane Michals. This edition was designed and printed by Dan Carr & Julia Ferrari. The photogravures were made and hand printed by Jon Goodman in Florence, Massachusetts. Clamshell case with printed leather spine label and velvet lining is in fine condition. Case measures approximately 15" x 20". Club Newsletter specific to this volume is laid-in. Constantine P. Cavafy was a renowned Greek poet who lived in Alexandria and worked as a journalist and civil servant. He published 154 poems; dozens more remained incomplete or in sketch form. His most important poetry was written after his fortieth birthday. Cavafy was instrumental in the revival and recognition of Greek poetry both at home and abroad. His poems are, typically, concise but intimate evocations of real or literary figures and milieux that have played roles in Greek culture. Uncertainty about the future, sensual pleasures, the moral character and psychology of individuals, homosexuality, and a fatalistic existential nostalgia are some of the defining themes. Besides his subjects, unconventional for the time, his poems also exhibit a skilled and versatile craftsmanship, which is almost completely lost in translation. [citation needed] Cavafy was a perfectionist, obsessively refining every single line of his poetry. His mature style was a free iambic form, free in the sense that verses rarely rhyme and are usually from 10 to 17 syllables. In his poems, the presence of rhyme usually implies irony. Cavafy drew his themes from personal experience, along with a deep and wide knowledge of history, especially of the Hellenistic era. Many of his poems are pseudo-historical, or seemingly historical, or accurately, but quirkily, historical. One of Cavafy's most important works is his 1904 poem "Waiting for the Barbarians". In 1911, Cavafy wrote Ithaca, inspired by the Homeric return journey of Odysseus to his home island, as depicted in the Odyssey. The poem's theme is that enjoyment of the journey of life, and the increasing maturity of the soul as that journey continues, are all the traveler can ask for. Almost all of Konstantinos Kavafis' work was in Greek; yet, his poetry remained unrecognized in Greece until after the publication of his first anthology in 1935. He is known for his prosaic use of metaphors, his brilliant use of historical imagery, and his aesthetic perfectionism. These attributes, amongst others, have assured him an enduring place in the literary pantheon of the Western World. Translor: Edmund Keeley - Edmund Leroy Keeley is an author, translator, and Charles Barnwell Straut Professor Emeritus of English at Princeton University. He is a prize-winning novelist and a noted expert on Greek poets C. P. Cavafy, George Seferis, Odysseus Elytis and Yannis Ritsos, and on post-Second World War Greek history. , Philip Sherrard - Philip Sherrard was a British author, translator, and philosopher. His work includes important translations of Modern Greek poets, and books on Modern Greek literature and culture, metaphysics, theology, art and aesthetics. A pioneer of Modern Greek studies in England, he was influential in making major Greek poets of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries known in the English-speaking world. He was also a prolific writer on theological and philosophical themes, addressing the origins of the social and spiritual crisis he believed was occurring in the developed world, and specifically exploring modern attitudes towards the environment from a Christian perspective. ; Signed by Illustrator .

Colored ink and gouache original painting / drawings, signed in pencil by the artist, created Spring, 2003 for a future edition. Series of 3 sheets; individual sheet size 5 1/4 x 8 1/8 inches. The title is an attribution, a modified quotation taken from the text based on the artist's marked copy of the work, and should be considered a working title. A unique original preliminary painting / sketch to illustrate Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass", the sequel to his celebrated edition of "Alice in Wonderland", winner of the Gold Medal from the New York Society of Illustrators in 2001. McGraw's colorful and vibrant work inspires children of all ages while not avoiding some of the edgier aspects of this remarkably complex work, generally considered to be Carroll's most psychologically involved. although no date for the full edition is set, this exhibition of work clearly shows that when published it will equal his award-winning "Alice". McGraw is an illustrator and artist who has worked with such authors as Janet Lewis, W. D. Snodgrass, Gary Soto, Robert Pinsky, et al., and reinterpreted classic texts by Carroll, Berthold Brecht, John Steinbeck, among others. Carroll's "Alice" has been the subject of McGraw's fascination for years, as he considers the character to have become the archetype of innocence in Anglo-American culture. This is from his first full-scale attempt to address Carroll's sequel, "Through the Looking Glass".
