?A new modification of the cloud method of determining the elementary electrical charge and the most probable value of that charge," in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine, Volume XIX, Sixth Series, 1910. Pp. 209-228.

Robert Millikan, in this, his famous oil drop experiment, found the value of the charge on the electron, providing the first definitive proof that electric charge is made up of elementary indivisible quantities, and that the charge is not a statistically averaged quantity. ?The experiment entailed balancing the downward gravitational force with the upward buoyant and electric forces on tiny charged droplets of oil suspended between two metal electrodes.... His experiment measured the force on tiny charged droplets of oil suspended against gravity between two metal electrodes. Knowing the electric field, the charge on the droplet was determined? (Wikipedia). Millikan arrived at a value for e that he considered accurate to within 2 percent. "This result provided the most persuasive evidence yet that electrons were fundamental particles of identical charge and mass (DSB). Not only had Millikan found the value of the charge on the electron, but he had provided convincing evidence that all electrical charge is some integer multiple of an elementary charge e, that the charge was always an integral multiple of an irreproducible value. In 2002, and writing about the most interesting experiments of all time, Physics World observed of Millikan?s work: ?the experiment can leave no-one in doubt that electrical charge is quantized and that modern physics is real, observable, and true. CONDITION & DETAILS: Full volume (includes papers by J. J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford and others). JENNY SAVILLE & GLEN LUCHFORD: CLOSED CONTACT

(SAVILLE, JENNY) (LUCHFORD, GLEN). Saville, Jenny, Glen Luchford & Katherine Dunn. JENNY SAVILLE & GLEN LUCHFORD: CLOSED CONTACT. Beverly Hills, CA: Gagosian Gallery, 2002. First Edition. Folio. Printed Boards. Photography Monograph. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 48pp, 15 b&w and 14 color illustrations. Designed by David James Associates. With biographies, exhibition histories and bibliographies. This is the opulently printed hardbound catalogue produced in conjunction with the 2002 Gagosian Gallery Beverly Hills exhibition of collaborative photographs by Jenny Saville and Glen Luchford. Each of the images shown was produced by Saville distorting and/or flattening her naked body against a sheet of glass, with Luchford capturing the result on camera. Originally intended as studies for the artist's large format figurative paintings, they became a body of work unto themselves. "Closed Contact" reproduces these photographs on heavy, ultra-glossy paper, and they are accompanied by an essay by Katherine Dunn. A most presentable copy of this uncommon item (cited on pages 398-399 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book") whose contents and textblock are immaculate, but whose covers show some noticeable wear, soiling and scuffing along with some abrading to the bottom edge of the front board. It has been priced accordingly. South Polar Times 1902 -1911

London: Orskey–Bonham–Niner; & Cambridge: Scott Polar Research Institute - Bonham,, 2002 & 2010. Centenary Edition. [together with;] Volume IV. 4 volumes quarto. Original blue cloth, title gilt to spines and upper boards, upper boards with mounted colour illustrations within gilt panel, blue silk page-markers. Numerous illustrations in colour and black and white. Very good. The first three volumes were originally published 1907-14, this facsimile offered in a numbered edition of 350. The fourth volume was never previously published, this is copy 338 of an edition of 500 in which a facsimile of the text held by the Scott Polar Institute is accompanied by an extensive introduction by Ann Savours which details the production of the South Polar Times; a comprehensive biography of the explorers who contributed to the South Polar Times; and a short section on "the tradition of polar publishing." The South Polar Times was originally produced to relieve the boredom of the cold, dark winter nights and raise the spirits of the men on board. So as well as essays on seals, whales and penguins, there were comic poems, puzzles, stories and cartoons. Scott's comments in the preface to the first published edition, written in 1907, seems to indicate that the journal achieved its goal; "I can see again a row of heads bent over a fresh monthly number to scan the latest efforts of our artists, and I can hear the hearty laughter at the sallies of our humorists and the general chaff when some sly allusion found its way home." A very handsome edition.

MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH JEWELRY - SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM ELIZABETH TAYLOR

(TAYLOR, ELIZABETH). Taylor, Elizabeth. Introduction by Francois Curiel. Ruth Peltason, Editor. MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH JEWELRY - SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM ELIZABETH TAYLOR. Signed by the Author. New York: Simon & Schuster, 2002. First Edition. 4to. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Fine/Fine. 240pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Takaaki Matsumoto. "Here, in my own words and as I remember them, are my cherished stories about a lifetime of fun and love and laughter...I've never thought of my jewelry as trophies. I'm here to take care of it and to love it, for we are only temporary custodians of beauty. One of Elizabeth Taylor's greatest passions is jewelry, and over the years she has amassed one of the world's foremost collections. In this revealing book, Elizabeth Taylor offers a personal guided tour of her collection. She takes us into her confidence, sharing personal anecdotes, witty asides, and intimate reminiscences about her life, her loves, and her collection. Whether talking about the famous La Peregrina pearl, which was briefly abducted by a household pet, or chatting about a childhood gift to her mother, Elizabeth Taylor shows herself to be the most seductive of storytellers: direct, irreverent, and charming. Complementing the stories are 125 stunning new photographs specially commissioned for this book of her most remarkable pieces, and more than 150 rarely seen images - many from her personal collection - of the star wearing her jewelry over the course of almost sixty years. We see her as a young ingénue of fifteen wearing what would be the first of many charm bracelets, and again, equally dazzling, as a mature woman, wearing the famous Duchess of Windsor diamond brooch, which she purchased to benefit AIDS research. "Elizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair with Jewelry" marks the first time this beautiful jewelry will be seen together as a collection. Lavishly produced and illustrated, the book has an introduction by the world-renowned authority on jewelry, Francois Curiel, of Christie's". A most handsome copy of the hardbound edition bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATION "To ..., Best Wishes, Elizabeth Taylor" in black ink on the title page. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 0-7432-3664-5 Inventory Number: 022171&

FALLING TO EARTH., A book of poems and intaglios.

Northampton, 2002. - 11 1/2 x 15. 42 leaves: fourteen poems printed letterpress and twenty-one etchings in color and b&w. Three of the images are large, foldout etchings; two of the images are repeated, making a total of 23 etchings. Binding suggests the former World Trade Towers: vertical raised surfaces are wrapped in gray Japanese paper with a silver, laid-screen design; collaged strips of blue & white paper produce the illusion of sky & building; exposed sewing along the spine; lower cover wrapped in gray metal-dried paper; in a steel-walled tray case. Falling to Earth is an artist's and poet's reaction to the terrifying and tragic collapse of the World Trade Center Towers and to the ensuing bombing campaign. The book's imagery uses the metaphor of falling to look at the human and spiritual costs of violence. Mythological & biblical narratives are evoked in a modern framework that may give perspective to raw, recent events. Icarus, Jacob's ladder, & parachuting Christs descend in our new millennium. The poems and etchings are frequented by angels providing vantage from above. In Falling to Earth Michael Kuch, who lives near the Trade Center site, "hopes to unfold a kind of topographical map of healing." The edition is 100 copies (with 10 hors commerce). Text and binding papers were made in New York by Carriage House Papers and Dieu DonnŽ Papermill; text printed by Art Larson in 14 point Emerson. Bound by Shoshannah Wineburg and Barry Spence. Book, Art, Object page 155.
