        Utatane

Tokyo: Little More Co., Ltd, 2001. First edition. Softcover. g+ to vg. Quarto. Unpaginated. [132]pp. Original bellyband over photo-illustrated dust-jacket and blind wrappers. Illustrated with 129 color photographs, "Utatane" is Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi's first book which led to her national and international breakthrough, and for which she received the prestigious Kimura Ihei Award.* The book was included in "The Photobook: A History. Vol. 2" by Parr and Badger, in which Gerry Badger wrote the following comment: "Just when it seems that everything has been photographed, in every possible way, along comes a photographer, whose work is so original that the medium is renewed. Such a photographer is Rinko Kawauchi, who makes simple, lyrical pictures, so fresh and unusual that they are difficult to describe or classify. Her images documentary everyday things, yet could not be described as documentary. They are generally light in tone, yet somehow dark in mood. They are almost hallucinatory, yet seem to capture something fundamental about the psychological mood of modern life. To be sure, Utatane, the title of her book, means 'siesta', which brings in the notion of a dreamlike state, and each image in the book could plausibly be considered as a still from a movie about a dream. The presence of a number of animals - insects, seagulls, koi carp, rabbits - might suggest some kind of Freudian interpretation. If Kawauchi in conjuring up a dreamlike state, she is also creating a powerful metaphor for life in the contemporary metropolis, which, at least economically, is comfortable for most people, on the surface. The dream evoked in "Utatane" is not nightmarish. Nothing much untoward happens, yet there is enough off-kilter to awaken us from our nap feeling vaguely confused, depressed and anxious." Very minor and sporadic soiling to bellyband and dust-jacket. Minor staining at lower fore-edge. Title in Japanese, colophon in Japanese and English. Bellyband and dust-jacket in overall good+ to very good, wrappers and interior in very good condition. * The Kimura Ihei Award is a Japanese photographic award that attracts the attention of the mass media and book-buyers. The award has been given every year since 1975 (except 1983) by the Asahi Shimbun Company, publisher of Asahi Shimbun and the magazine Asahi Camera, in honor of the photographer Ihei Kimura. It is given to one or more new photographers whose work has been exhibited or published during the previous year and is announced in Asahi Camera: its original name, soon shortened, was Asahi Kamera Kimura Ihei Shashin-sh . The award is usually given to a single photographer. In 2000, the unprecedented awarding of three prizes, each to a female photographer, caused a stir. Its major rival for attention in the mass media is the Domon Ken Award, given annually to a single photographer, usually one with a longer career than those who win the Kimura Award.

Lexikon der Mathematik in 6 Bänden. (Gebundene Ausgabe) von Guido Walz (Herausgeber)

Spektrum / Akad., 2001. 2001. Hardcover. 24,3 x 16,8 x 1,9 cm. Arcadia

The Arion Press, San Francisco 2001 - Limited edition of 400 numbered copies and 26 lettered copies NFS, this no. 268, SIGNED BY BOTH THE AUTHOR AND THE ARTIST on the colophon page. Sir Tom Stoppard (born Tomas Straussler, 1937), playwright and screenwriter, has received an Academy Award (for Shakespeare in Love) and four Tony Awards. This play, first performed in London in 1993, "interweaves elements of the murder mystery with bedroom farce"; it "begins in 1809 in the schoolroom of Sidley Park, the seat of the Coverly family, where Lord and Lady Croom are entertaining a set of poets and intellectuals that includes the historical figure Lord Byron. Episodes alternate in Sidley Park between 1809-1812 and the present, nearly two centuries later, among the Croom descendants". William Matthews (b. 1949) is among the foremost American artists in watercolor; his illustrations for this work show the reader the larger setting for the play, exterior to the stage set. They are inserted two at the front and two at the back of the book, with the unusual and imaginative design allowing the book to be displayed with all four illustrations on view at once and pages from the dialogue open as well. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in green ribbed silk, paper labels on the front and spine with green lettering, watercolour illustrations bound in at front and rear as referred to above, title page in green and black; oblong being approximately 11" tall and 14" wide, pagination: (i)-xvi, (1)-114, colophon (115).         British Private Press Prospectuses, 1891-2001

The Whittington Press (2001), (Risbury, Herefordshire) - No. VII of forty of the deluxe version, out of a total edition of 350, bound in full Oasis leather with endpapers marbled by Christopher Rowlatt, with a separate portfolio of original prospectuses. The book's Introduction points out that an alternate title for this work might have been "The pleasures of private press prospectuses", as these prospectuses themselves have become collectible both as a substitute for the books themselves which are often scarce or rare, and not inexpensive to obtain; and because they offer an insight into "the activities and intentions of the press concerned". The Whittington Press is singularly appropriate as a publisher of the joys of fine press printing, being renowned today for their own publications. The separate portfolio of original prospectuses for this volume includes: Rampant Lions Press (Areopagitica), Chilmark Press (The Mountains), Gwasg Gregynog (Deaths and Entrances), Inky Parrot (The Return of A.J. Raffles), Previous Parrot (An Anamorphic Alphabet), The Old School Press (Catalogue - some plans, no promises), Gregynog (Eros and Psyche - 1935), Tabard Private Press (Book Production Notes), Whittington Press (Fine Papers of the Oxford University Press), Whittington Press (Plans Etc.), Whittington Press (Wallpapers Printed at the Curwen Press), September Press (The Four Gospels), Golden Cockerel Press (Mademoiselle de Maupin), Doves Press (In Preparation - 1914), Celtic Cross Press (Stained Glass Windows), Nonesuch Press (Catalogue - 1928), The Vale Press (The Sonnets of Shakespeare), The Fleece Press (Catalogue), Libanus Press (Portable Pleasures), Golden Cockerel Press (Mr. Chambers and Persephone), Golden Cockerel (Catalogue - 1937), Workshop Press (Fleurons), Inky Parrot (An Avian Alphabet), Red Hen Press (Two Moons), Incline Press (Catalogue), Rhinocerous Press (Catalogue), Stanbrook Abbey (Announcement), Cherub Press (Catalogue), Joshua Heller Rare Books, Inc.         To Place / Becoming a Landscape

(Denver, Colorado): Ginny Williams, 2001 - 2 vols. 4to (202 x 254 mm), pp.[48]. 22 colour photographs; pp.[48]. 22 colour photographs. Photo-illustrated perfect bound wrappers. Two chromogenic photographs (202 x 254 mm) each numbered and one signed in pencil to verso, together housed in the publishers cream cloth-covered board box, front lettered in black, light blue dot stamped to front and to spine; small dent to rear bottom edge of box, minor soiling. Signed and numbered 1/100 by Horn in pencil to inside of the box. Near-fine. First edition, one of 100 signed and numbered copies issued with a signed pair of original photographs, from a total edition of 900. Becoming a Landscape is the eighth volume in Roni Horn’s epic and ambitious, ongoing encyclopedic series ‘To Place’. Each volume deals with a different theme, and together they combine to build a portrait of both Iceland, and the artist herself. Becoming a Landscape consists of two books which each contain a series of near identical photographs, taken moments apart, of the hot springs near Geysir, interspersed with portraits of a young man. In a 1995 interview with Claudia Spinelli for Journal of Contemporary Art, Horn discussed the importance of this series and its place within her work: ‘The entrance to all my work is the idea of an encyclopedia of identity. It is best represented by the books, the series called ‘To Place’, which is extremely important to me. I have been working on this since 1988. It’s really the heart. It is a series of books, each one of which adds to the whole in a way that alters the identity of it retroactively. So the first volume appears to be a book of drawings. The second book was about a completely different subject but in the same format. With the third volume people start to realize something: “Well, this looks like a series, so there must be some relationship. But I haven’t a clue as to what it is.” . The books are this very slow process of accumulation in the period of a life, my life. The underlying subject stays the same: Iceland and myself, the viewer and the view. This is the dialectic that defines each in itself.’ Roth, A., The Open Book: A History of the Photographic Book from 1878 to the Present pp.348-351; Parr, M. and Badger, G., The Photobook: A History Vol. II pp.164-5; Aarons, P. and Roth, A., In Numbers: Serial Publications by Artists Since 1955 pp.386-393.         RICHARD PRINCE : EARLY PHOTOGRAPHS 1977-1979 Skarstedt Fine Art Exhibition RARE

New York SKARSTEDT FINE ART 2001. SKARSTEDT FINE ART: New York, 2001. RICHARD PRINCE : EARLY PHOTOGRAPH 1997-1979. Published by SKARSTEDT FINE ART, New York, 2001. Published on the occasion of the exhibition held at the Skarstedt Fine Art Galleries from February 21 - April 20, 2001. Hardcover book, paper covered boards, purple lettering on the front cover and spine, no dustjacket as issued, 8x12 inches oblong, 47 pages. Illustrated with iconic "RE-PHOTOGRAPHS" that marked the beginning of Richard Prince's explosive artistic career. VERY GOOD Condition: The covers have light toning to the spine and margins, and a few shelf rubs; the spine ends are a bit pushed and have a little associated wear; overall the covers are sturdy and attractive. Internally there is very light toning to the page edges, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid, very nice copy. An Important and SCARCE exhibition monograph that shows the beginnings of the artistic career of Richard Prince. From the SKARSTEDT FINE ART website: ******Richard Prince: Early Photographs 1977-1979 was published on the occasion of his eponymous exhibition at Skarstedt Fine Art in early 2001. These early Prince photographs initiated Prince's exploration of authorship and the original; ideas that were prevalent in the critical discourse of the late 70's, and perhaps even more so today. By manipulating the means and products of mass media, Prince gives his viewers a glimpse of American culture as directed towards middle-class consumers. His appropriations of living rooms, watches, and sophisticated couples and individuals turn the informative nature of the original advertisement into cultural indicators of a borrowed and fictional representation. As Kate Linker stated in Art Magazine, November 1982, "None of Richard Prince's images are unfamiliar; they are taken from the classic icons of product fetishism and satisfied desire.Prince selects them both for their typicality and for their strangeness or unreality, for their overloaded intensity.the super real extravagance of their particulars, which are carefully naturalized as real." This book contains writing by Richard Prince taken from his novel Why I Go To The Movies Alone.****** About RICHARD PRINCE (from Wikipedia): ******Richard Prince (b. 1949) is an American painter and photographer. Prince began copying other photographer's work in 1975. His image, Untitled (Cowboy), a rephotographing of a photograph taken originally by Sam Abell and appropriated from a cigarette advertisement, was the first rephotograph to raise more than $1 million at auction when it was sold at Christie's New York in 2005. Starting in 1977, Prince photographed four photographs which previously appeared in the New York Times. This process of rephotographing continued into 1983. One of his rephotographs from this period is now displayed in the Whitney Museum of American Art. In late 2007, Prince had a retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, a comprehensive show hung in chronological order along the upward spiraling walls. The show continued onto the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Maria Morris Hamburg, the curator of photography at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, asserted, "He is absolutely essential to what's going on today, he figured out before anyone else - and in a very precocious manner - how thoroughly pervasive the media is. It's not just an aspect of our lives, but the dominant aspect of our lives." In 2008 the painting 'Overseas Nurse' from 2002 fetched a record breaking $8,452,000 at Sotheby's in London. Prince now lives and works in New York City.****** Very Good

One Sweet Morning for mezzo soprano and orchestra. Autograph musical sketchleaf for the work composed to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Titled and signed by the composer. Undated, but 2010

Corigliano, a multi-award-winning American composer, was commissioned by Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic to compose a work to commemorate the 10th anniverary of September 11th 2001. One Sweet Morning, with text by Milosz, Homer, Li Po, and Harburg, was first performed on September 11th 2011 by the Philharmonic with Stephanie Blythe as soloist and praised by music critics including Anthony Tommasini: "With a viscerally emotional score One Sweet Morning shifts in mood from ruminative to bellicose, from mystical to wrenching. Mr. Corigliano has long drawn from diverse styles to fashion his musical voice.... the skill and vision at play are impressive." The New York Times, October 2, 2011 "Ten years later, that day is more calmly remembered as just one in a continuum of terrible days. September 11th, 2001 was discrete and specific: but war and its anguishes have been with us forever. I needed a cycle of songs that would embed 9/11 into that larger story. So I chose four poems (one of them part of an epic poem) from different ages and countries. The first poem? Czeslaw Milosz';s "A Song on the End of the World," written in Warsaw in 1944? sets a tranquil scene: a vista of serenity that still hints at the possibility of chaos to come. The poet';s descriptions of everyday matters turn chilling when he notes, "No one believes it is happening now." My setting for these words is hushed and motionless, never rising in volume and intensity. Shattering the calm is the second poem: that portion of Homer';s Iliad chronicling a massacre led by the Greek prince Patroclus. Each kill is described in detail; the music, too, strives for the brutal and unsparing. "War South of the Great Wall," by the 8th century poet Li Po, follows. Its cool, atmospheric language views a bloody battle from a great remove: warriors seem to "swarm like armies of ants." The narrator';s poise collapses only when she reveals "my husband - my sons - you';ll find them all there, out where war-drums throb and throb." Her anguish, and the battle that is its cause, surge in an orchestral interlude, climaxing with the orchestra alone meditating on the narrator';s themes. The orchestra, diminishing in intensity, introduces the poem that gives the cycle its name: "One Sweet Morning," by E. Y. ("Yip") Harburg, a name that might surprise audiences who know it principally from his sparkling lyrics for such plays and movies as "The Wizard of Oz" and "Finian';s Rainbow." But Harburg also wrote a few volumes of light and not-so-light verse, and it was in one of those that I came upon this deep and tender lyric. "One Sweet Morning" ends the cycle with the dream of a world without war - an impossible dream, perhaps, but certainly one worth dreaming. In this short poem, Harburg paints a beautiful scene where "the rose will rise...spring will bloom...peace will come....one sweet morning." john corigliano.com.. 1 page. Oblong folio, 280 x 420 mm. Notated in pencil on light green 16-stave printed Aztec XX-16 music paper. 7 measures of the opening of the work in condensed score occupying the upper 7 staves. Originally titled "Skylines" and altered to "One Sweet Morning." With an autograph note in the composer's hand "Discarded opening of song cycle 'One Sweet Morning' John Corigliano."
